  1. We all hate scammers. These people use a wide array of increasingly sophisticated schemes and methods to secure the transfer of valuables from your pocket to theirs. But think about this for a moment -- OK, so you got scammed in RS. You lost stuff. It could be as simple as a rune helmet, as bad as millions upon millions of items, or even worse, get scammed out of your entire account. Yes, it feels bad. Yes, you feel very mad and sad. Yes, this feeling is completely justified. But did you learn anything from the experience? - Did you learn the principle that stuff too good to be true, well, is? - Did you learn that anything that persuades you to hurry a trade (like a lag excuse) or do something without properly thinking it over will inevitably result in getting scammed? - Did you learn the common social engineering tricks? - DID YOU LEARN NOT GET SCAMMED THE SAME WAY AGAIN? Think about it. You may still be a high school or college student. For most of you, your parents still support you and provide protection. But sooner or later, you'll go out there in the real world for a life of your own, and will have to manage your own property and finances. Do you think that living through an RS scam will help you avoid a REAL-LIFE scam? - Will the experience of wrongly trusting a fake player mod will help you avoid the experience of trusting a real-life person who pretends to be some figure of authority to deprive you of your property one way or another (like a fake IRS agent pretending to "help" you get around that tax bracket)? - Will being scammed in an RS trust test help you tell real-life social engineers who make friends with you to borrow money and never be seen again? - Will living through a stolen bank password will teach you to keep better track of your real-life bank PIN? - Will falling for the "Ahrim's staff" scam help you not invest in a sham stock market specifically set up to lure gullible people into investing in worthless stock? - Will biting the "free armor trimming" scam help you avoid falling for the "enlarge a certain body part of yours" scam? - Will getting your account stolen by a keylogger masqueraded as a "super undetectable auto program free levels!!!" will stop you from investing in that "triple your gas mileage by buying our unique exclusive super gasoline additive" that ends up screwing your engine? - Will giving your RS password to a "friend" "just to do a quest" and then finding your bank empty will protect you from giving your workplace building access card to a "coworker from the floor above" who "just needs to get something from his office", and then getting fired/sued/even thrown in jail? - Most importantly, will learning the general psychology and social aspects of scammers, the wide variety of scams that they can possible attempt, the typical "too good to be true offers", the things with "timers" attached, and other general characteristics of most scams... Will it allow you to avoid scams in general, even those you have not experienced in the past. Yes, getting scammed in RS is bad. But real-life scams can be much, much worse. People lose their careers, houses, reputation, even their freedom sometimes, by falling for a real-life scam! Do scammers teach a lesson? Or at least, can they teach a lesson to those willing to learn? Yes, some people are just stupid, and no matter how much time they are scammed they won't learn the lesson. But there is a difference between getting scammed because of stupidity, and getting scammed because of inexperience. The smartest people will not be scammed themselves -- they will learn from other people's mistakes and make the necessary conclusion to avoid being in the same position. But even those who learn on their own RS skin, might be thankful one day for the experience, which later in life saved them from making a much, much worse move. So what do you think? Opinions welcome! Note 1: This is NOT a topic to justify scammers or say scammers are cool!!! I'm just saying that sometimes even bad things (like getting scammed) can teach you good lessons, and better be scammed in a game than in real-life. Note 2: Keep discussion civil. This is not a topic to post "scammers suck" vs "everyone who got scammed stupid and it's their own fault". I'd be interested in actually seeing some debate going on.
  2. Why can't F2P have... The Pet Rock? Then the majority of F2Pers will get a worthy opponent to challenge in an IQ contest.
  3. Or just make some money and buy those bones. Seriously. Even working as nature runner for a given period of time will make you money to buy bones that will give you more exp than picking them for the same period of time. But if you are one of those thick-skulled people who have some sort of "anti-skill-buying" vendetta, coupled with "F2P for life out of principle, I like RS but I'll never, ever, pay Jagex a dime" then this method is good for you.
  4. Sigh, what ever gave you the idea that it was NOT going to be an IN-GAME feature (as in an addition to the current pub/private chats)? Having an outside client (be it custom-written, IRC-implemented, or whatever), from the Jagex point of view, will be stupid, unorganized, taking control over chat censor and other rulebreaking out of their hands, let a WHOLE range of new scams and viruses travel around (hey, download this new version of the "official" RS chat client), an extra piece of software to update separately, new opportunities for hacks and bug abuse, extra layer of confusion for players... I can't end about thinking of reasons why it would be totally dumb. I can bet pretty much anything that the clan support (or the majority of it's implementation) will be fully in-game. We *might* see subsets of RSOF for clans to use (like dynamically created boards for each clan, but then they would remain on the RSOF and be fully moderated like everything else (and even then I find it highly unlikely). We might also see clan highscores or whatnot. But the actual implementation of any clan system, including any in-game chat being done outside the RS client and outside the full and *direct* (from moderation down to source code and transmitted packets ) control of Jagex? Not a snowball's chance in hell, no, forget it, that's too good of a chance... Not a fireball's chance in heaven!
  5. Quitting, eh? Gives away 30m, eh? For nothing, eh? I'd suggest starting writing that ban appeal right now... So when you find your char has been banned for "real-world trading", you already have something to appeal with. See if you can find a reason believable enough for Jagex.
  6. One of the reasons nobody ANSWERS in the sticky, is because nobody ASKS there, preferring to create new threads just so *they* get more attention and with no regards to other forum members. Maybe if everyone followed the forum rules then it'd be better off for everybody?
  7. Remember when... There was no Runescape? :ohnoes: :ohnoes: :ohnoes:
  8. Pest control? Other than that, there is no free lunch really. You can train at places that don't wante *much* food, but you will still gradually lose hp, and if you go to bank every time you are low it will take much longer.
  9. Keep in mind that the weight of your character makes a HUGE difference. With 59 agility (no pots), I failed 14 out of 14 times to scale the obstacles when wearing proselyte armor and some other stuff (I had melee protect 100% of time doing quest, using a LOT of prayer pots and a holy wrench). Then I said screw it, went to the bank, changed for monks robes, put as much as I could in bank, and succeeded on first try (and second round was just 1 failure before success)
  10. Pretty sure, there is no "quick" way to re-get your robes. But once you go get them, you can get more than 1 of each item (drop the item you got and talk to the NPC again). I collected 3-4 of each item when I got mine, just in case I die. Only exception is sword - you can only get 1 at a time - but luckily they are very easy to replace (no wildy trips or anything like that)
  11. First of all, let's define buyable. You can't define a non-buyable skill as a skill that requires no money to get to 99 - because ANY skill can be gotten to 99 without money, if you make all materials yourself, even construction - it would just take forever. I offer and use the following definition: A buyable skill is a skill which, by investing a non-trivial amount of money, can be trained more quickly than otherwise. "Non-trivial" means money which would take a tangible amount of time to produce. For example, buying a harpoon from the fishing store is a "trivial" amount (yes, it costs 1gp, but not a serious amount), while buying a dragon axe for woodcutting is a "non-trivial" cost. Reason combat not included - magic and ranged for obvious reasons, but even melee results depend on used armor - better and more expensive armor means faster training, so that's why it's kinda "buyable". And since slayer speed also directly depends on quality of equipment, it does not qualify either. Now for the rest... Woodcutting - axes improve your cut speed, now without the axe head event there are no downsides to dragon axes, they cut a bit faster, and the cost of a dragon axe is not trivial. Thus the skill is "buyable", by the definition posted above - someone investing money WILL consistently cut a bit faster than someone who doesn't. Mining - requires a rune pick for best results. Arguable whether cost is "trivial" or not - for any serious miner 15k is probably not an investment that requires any time to accomplish. And now that granite quarry is subject to desert heat, powerminers there (formerly one of best places) would need to periodically buy waterskins (not much own their own, but it does add over time). Fishing - shilo village (fastest spot) requires completing some quests which need some money invested, but probably not a fair criteria to judge by, since the cost is not directly associated with training the skill, so probably a genuine non-buyable skill. Agility - For significantly better results, use lots and lots and lots of EXPENSIVE running potions and EVEN MORE EXPENSIVE super running potions. Does not qualify as "non-buyable", yes you can train to 99 without any, but a person who uses them will train considerably faster. Thieving - dunno why no votes, seems to me as one of the most non-buyable out there. Thieving at adrougne is cheap and quick and requires nothing, PP and BJ@Bandits needs some quests but as I said before they are not direct investments and thus probably don't qualify. Costs of blackjacks are trivial. Costs of gloves of silence are not (even though they are cheap, they are a _constant_ expenditure and thus would add up to a non-trivial amount by the time you reach 99), however, it is arguable whether a good PP runner can work just as fast as pickpocket. So, I'd say that fishing is the most "non buyable", closely followed by thieving and mining. Woodcutting is a bit behind, and agility disqualified outright. BTW: A devilish question - a penny saved is a penny earned, right? So, would that mean that sacrificing profit from your skill for faster training instead of keeping it and training slower would mean the skill is "buyable"? (because in essence, you are "buying" the faster exp with the money you'd otherwise make from the skill). If so, mining would be disqualified because for best results you drop the ores instead of banking and selling them. Woodcutting probably not as good spots let you bank stuff faster than you'd drop it anyways. Not sure about fishing - is going to bank faster than dropping or not? P.S: I consider the whole "buyable" thing kinda sensless anyways. Some people like saying that "buying" skills is wrong and you should get all materials yourself. I think it's like calling someone who buys rune armor a noob because the "right" way is to train 99 smithing and make it yourself. The multiplayer economy is there for a reason. If you can buy something to train faster, do it, there is no "pride" in not using the economy. It's like making your own clothes and growing your own plants instead of buying food and clothes from a supermarket. :/
  12. I can't have a virtual relationship in RS, I'm already engaged to the Princess of Miscellania... :ohnoes: :ohnoes: :ohnoes:
  13. That was a conspiracy, Zezima bribed the JaGex people to ban N0va, so he will remain #1 forever. I suspect he will repeat his actions, Uloveme better watch his back ... :-k her  What a load of bullocks If you search google you will know it's a her and if you saw her ingame you will know. Not all the top players are males. THINK BEFORE YOU POST Not my picture. Not my picture. That looks like a her.
  14. Crackers are kinda pointless to have at this point. They took a very heavy price dump late last year (from 900m down to 600m), so it's strategic value as a long-term investment has been shattered. So all people on leave or who just want to have something solid will choose something else. Plus, extra drawback of it not being wearable, so can't show it off or party with it. Long-term investors or just rich partygoers would tend to wear a phat instead. Rare merchants tend to avoid them too. They are too expensive for a good market to merchant in (do you ever see someone in W2 selling/buying cracker? You very rarely see phat merchants, but crackers? never!). Most merchants find it's more profitable to trade in lesser rares (masks and santas being most popular by far), and some degree phats, but crackers are just too few and too expensive for public trade. Really the only people who'd want a cracker are those who are not just rich, but *very* rich, as in already having one or more of each other rare including phats, and just having too much money to burn or wanting a "complete" set of rares. These people usually have other people find the stuff for them, and the process kinda goes below the deck, because such people are well known and have their own contacts without having to post on forums or trade in W2 to get what they need. Of course, crackers didn't really go anywhere (a few got banned and stuff but not most), but there are so few compared to amount of people now, that they gradually went away from the hands of upper middle class investors and merchants to *very* rich collectors who tend to trade privately. And since they are not wearable, no wonder you neither see nor hear about crackers being traded or used.
  15. Great, the moment there is 22, the competition for the front page officially begins, as *at least* 1 person will be always forced off the front page
  16. I won't mention player names, but a certain player today was the 21st one to reach all 99s, which means that the front page of the highscores is now full of level 2277 people. The reason it's interesting is because until today, every person who achieved all 99s, were automatically front and center on the highscores, and every single player who went to the highscores for any reason *always* saw their names before being able to go anywhere else. From today, new 99s will have to compete for the front page, and existing 99s will be also forced to compete if they don't want to drop into relative obscurity by being pushed off the first page. Of course, this can change back if a new skill is introduced, because all 20 places will be up for grabs once again. But still, it is the first time for any skillset that the highscores front page was completely maxed.
  17. OK here are the facts: - From the copyrihgt perspective, short recordings of limited-amount of RS content in specific context (sharing videos with others), qualifies as Fair use under US law and similar provisions in most other countries including the UK. Which means I can use it regardless whether Jagex likes it or not. - From the game-rules perspective, honestly, I don't have to give a damn if the videos break rules or not. Jagex's rules only apply to people playing within their private property, which is RS itself. These rules have absolutely no legal force outside RS. YouTube is not owned by Jagex, and they have no legal right to order YouTube to take down materials they don't like. - Just because Jagex WANTS you to not share your videos, doesn't mean it has any legal right to enforce that want. Once again, Fair Use protects limited amount of shared work. Within RS, it is always the players who are told by Jagex "our decisions are final and if you are not happy with them, too bad". But here, for once, Jagex is the one that can be told "if you don't like the videos on YouTube, too bad. You can't force players to stop making OR sharing them, regardless of how bad you want to". BTW, the same thing goes for the Jagex messages player get in their inbox. Legally, a mail communication between two parties cannot be copyrighted by one of them, nor can they stop the other party from publishing or otherwise using the contents of the message. Jagex's claim that I "can't share messages from Jagex with other people" really doesn't have any legal ground. They can label it "private", "confidential", or whatever the heck they want, but they can't legally stop me from using it any way I want, including sharing.
  18. Wasn't Stronghold of Security precisely the one update like almost 2 years ago I was referring to as the "last" update F2P got? And for the people complaining drop parties will now be overrun by F2P noobs - nothing stops you from doing the party in Falador but on an F2P server I imagine as a matter of fact that W2 will have some quite nice things dropped from time to time, just because there's such a huge amount of people in Falador W2
  19. Heh, the def prayers really seem to add insult to injury for "pures". I guess Jagex really wants to get the point across.
  20. Does that mean F2P just got the party room? Which would mean F2P got the first non-trivial update in 2 years?? :ohnoes: :ohnoes: :ohnoes:
  21. If its such a game then why do you care if you lose money. Answer me that without a flame or some ignorant remark. Let me answer that for him, without flame or some ignorant remark. I have at least 2 valid reasons: - Even in a game, money takes time to earn. If you earn 200k/hr, 1.6m would take 8 hours to make. 8 hours is like a full-time workday. Even though you were playing instead of working, that time would still be worth to you, and as money is the result of spending that time, the money is worth to you. - The point of a multiplayer game is competition. Not just for MMORPGs, but for any other game involving multiple players. The objective is to win, not to lose, and even though you may enjoy the game itself more than the result, even the game itself wouldn't be enjoyable if you were not trying to win. It's like playing basketball without trying to outscore your opponent, what's the fun in that? After the game is over, you might be equally happy if you won or lost, but during the game you'd only have fun if you were trying to win.
  22. Ok this is a reply to the guy who whines about 'lvl 1 Edge becoming "unpkable"'... Did it ever occur to you that level one Edge was not DESIGNEd to be a 1-hit-kill zone? That's the reason it's level 1, FFS. Wilderness goes from least dangerous to most dangerous. If you want danger, go to level 40. Jagex has introduced well enough amounts of making sure your opponent does NOT leave in one piece in lvl 40 wilderness (bind runes, DDS specs, ancients, and on levels 30-15ish teleblock too). THAT's where it is DESIGNED to get dangerous. THAT's where neither you nor your opponents are guaranteed to survive. NOT in level 1!! Level 1 is the first rate from "non dangerous" to "dangerous" meaning it's "not dangerous unless you are dumb". It is NOT designed to force people to fight to the death, FFS, the whole point of lvl 1 is to be almost safe, because it's only the beginning. Of course, nothing stops you and your opponent to play by any rules you make up. Want an "honorable" fight? Agree to not run. Agree not to safe. Agree not to pray. Agree not to eat, FFS, if that's what you want. The whole point is that you cannot FORCE your opponent to adhere to these rules, and if he doesn't follow them, tough luck pal, find another opponent. If in YOUR mindset level 1 wilderness is a legitimate hunting ground for loot-carrying pray, take a reality pill. It was never designed to be that way, and obviously it is not. Go to level 50. Too scared from level 50? Too friggin bad. You will not get forced pks in level 1, whether you like it or not, nor should you. Heck yea, you won't pk an unwilling person at level 1 unless he lags, gets kicked, or w/e, because that's the WHOLE POINT OF LEVEL 1 WILDERNESS. When will the point get across to ya'll "lvl 1 leet pkers" (geez, a "pro lvl 1 pker" is like a "pro kindergarten dodgeballer"). Go to the adult world, or stop whining that you can't pk in kindergarten as you would in an adult world.
  23. Regarding RS1 macroing - yes, it USED to be horrible. Jagex employed the only guaranteed solution of removing macroers (gradually but steadily) - block new character registration. With a non-increasing player base, and a fixed starting number of character accounts (which can only decrease), macroers will sooner or later be caught and banned, and unable to re-register, will be kicked out for good. Sooner or later only honest players remain, because even the stealthiest of macroers will SOMETIME make a slip and get caught, and in RS1 there are no second chances. Of course, this solution entirely screws over the game, because the lack of influx of new low level players defeats the purpose of earning a high level - the average player level steadily grows (and cannot stop growing because new levels can't offset level gain by older players); there are no tasks you'd be "too veteran to do", and you see lvl 110s do menial things like mine ores for their own self sufficience; all items are bloody expensive (because gp is harder to make), and if you DON'T level constantly like everyone else, you soon find yourself to be a total noob. I think that seeing a level 3 in RS1 is rarer than seeing a level 123 It's like fixing a crime problem in a city by dropping a nuke on it -- THAT will sure kill all the criminals! Might be "some" collateral damage, but who cares. :-/
  24. Lvl 99 in ban appeal-sending. You'll need that level in order to get yourself out of a "real-world trading suspicion ban", which you'll get when Jagex finds someone just gave you 29m for nothing, and assume you bought it for real-life cash.
