  1. No national holiday in the US is illegal to work on, I am going to assume that it is the same for most other countries. Many have laws about wages on holidays though (time and a half usually). It's raining here, so I am not going to see fireworks anywhere. This was going to be the first time in probably a decade that I went somewhere to see a firework show. A little disappointed, also the houses around me are probably not going to have good shows either.
  2. I see no reason that the age limit should be 21 when you are an adult at 18. So less restrictions on getting alcohol would be better, but stricter restrictions on when you can drive/operate machinery would be good. Drinking alcohol at a place in which it is safe doesn't hurt anyone but yourself. But when you get out on the road, or drink before working with heavy machinery, you have a good chance of hurting someone else.
  3. That is also completely wrong. The radiation levels there are now no different than any other place on earth.
  4. That's just plain wrong. This is a picture of the monument built at the exact spot where the bomb was dropped on Nagasaki. Notice the person on the right walking past it just fine.
  5. This is probably my favourite holiday of the year since I don't particularly care what any holiday is about. Today though are explosions in the sky for a few hours tonight :D .
  6. We had a topic about this about a week ago, it could still be on the first page.
  7. I stated the last time the chain link fence idea came up that it was the only solution necessary, as long as it is built fairly well zombies won't be able to topple it over. It's much easier to build, and is actually plausible unlike a concrete wall. Just out of curiosity, how many people here have worked with concrete before? It isn't easy to do manually. The only way to build a wall would be with concrete trucks, which you would have to find at a concrete company, steal and then get back to your base. Then you have one load of concrete, which might be enough to make 5 feet of wall that is 1 foot deep and 10 feet tall (10 feet tall means that 2 feet at least will be below ground level). You would have to have the forms up for the section also, and wait a day for it to set. Then you have to take the forms off, reset them on the next wall section, and get another load of concrete from the concrete company. There will be no one there either, so you have to find a way to power the company so that you can load the mix into the truck, then you have to pump water into it. Could go on and on about how a concrete wall isn't plausible.
  8. Much deeper things? Can you get a little more pretentious please? Your consciousness exists as the physical, which is your brain, and the electrical impulses which interact with different neurons in the brain. When you die your brain is no longer getting energy, therefore your consciousness no longer exists, so nothing happens after death. All of the atoms and energy that made up your consciousness will be conserved, so all parts would exist, but your consciousness doesn't exist. You won't be "experiencing" nothingness because you won't exist anymore, you will just be nothing.
  9. Consciousness is dependent on the brain's function, the brain's function is dependent on energy gained from metabolizing and that is the conservation of energy that everyone is bringing up, the energy that makes up your consciousness.
  10. Yes, you were the one who brought up the atomic energy part. Consciousness exists as the brain and signals in the brain, all of which are dependent on metabolized energy.
  11. Nope, atoms get energy from having mass. more info Individual atoms have a certain amount of energy because they are mass. Mass and energy can be substituted for each other. Your brain uses energy it gets from glucose stored in your body, and while it is only 2% of your body weight normally it uses around 25% of the total energy that your body uses.
  12. Your body and brain get that energy from somewhere, and that is from food.
  13. Yeah, the conservation of mass/energy argument that some have brought up is pointless in this debate. You metabolize energy from food, when you die you are no longer getting any energy and entropy takes it's toll on your body. Yes, everything follows the conservation laws, but it isn't your consciousness anymore.

Usually waiting an hour will kind of kick start a character if they aren't doing anything.
  15. It was pretty much over before MJ died. The big news was health care this week (in the US), that is what stopped getting covered (as much).
  16. I said the topic should be here instead, but no one seemed to care.
  17. Shouldn't this be in the MM&TV forum? That's where the Farrah Fawcett death thread is. Everyone is getting their news from TMZ, and they are saying he is dead.
  18. I like this idea better than the last (just throwing any movie in) but it still won't work. Also like that this dropped the movies to see before you die part and just keep it nice and simple as top movies. So what we need to do, lose the lists you already have. They were put together randomly by a few people. Then we need to have nominations, and we can a good amount of movies that way. Then we have to get all the nominations down to the top 100, but these two steps can be combined as one. I think people have mentioned this before, but just to make it clearer: Each person picks 10 movies, and they give each of those movies a value from 1 to 10. 10 being their favourite, 1 being their 10th favourite. You look for all instances of a movie in everyone's list, then add the numbers together. The movie with the highest number is number 1, and it goes from there. This would allow some movies that not many have seen to make the list (like half of Daan's list :P ) to actually be able to make it on the list, even if it is a little low.
  19. I think I explained it pretty well, if you don't get it read the wikipedia link.
  20. Well what I thought of when reading the OP was 100 movies to give someone who doesn't really watch movies to show them the full range of what movies can do. So crappy movies would be on the list if there was a reason to. I probably still wouldn't put either Jackass or Hannah Montana on it, since neither of them did anything special. Jackass might be the only reality TV show to get a movie, I don't consider that good enough of a reason to get on the list, but there is an argument for it there. But it seems now the OP and everyone else wants to put their favourite movies on there, which is what any topic like this will become eventually anyways.
  21. What crawled up your butt? Yes, you could argue that the Hannah Montana movie also would fit on the list on must see films before you die since it was huge movie that affected a lot of people. Whether or not it is good is irrelevant, as the OP said in the quote above. Also you could put some truly bad movies on the list, to show how much a film could suck.
  22. I don't get it. :( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erd%C5%91s_number Basically you get a number based on how close to Paul Erd?s (a mathematician) you worked. He is assigned 0, people working with him get 1, people working with 1's but not Paul get a 2, and so on. So in the comic a person and the math department create a mathematical paper and want Paul to sign it so they can all claim their Erd?s number is 1. Then the alt text mentions Kevin Bacon, a shoutout to the six degrees of Kevin Bacon. KB's Bacon number is 0, people who worked with him are 1's, people who worked with 1's but not Bacon are 2's, and so on. So if the main character got Paul Erd?s to sign that document and get an Erd?s number of 1, and did a short film with Kevin Bacon and got a Bacon number of 1, his Erd?s-Bacon number would be 2, which is the best possible you can get (unless you are Paul Erd?s or Kevin Bacon, in which case the best Erd?s-Bacon number you can get is 1). Right now the lowest known Erd?s-Bacon number is 3, by a mathematics professor. Fun stuff to read on wikipedia, good place to head from there is to small-world stuff and six degree stuff.
  23. Depends on the country's laws. Many people spread that misinformation in relation to the US, where it is not true. When you are downloading something you are making a copy of copyrighted material, so it is still copyright infringement. In other countries it may be legal, but a post on an internet forum isn't a place to get that information.
  24. Man, that is nice. I paid at least $20 a piece per season and sometimes up to $35. Probably cost me around $200 for all 9 seasons. Forgot to mention it before, I also made my second Blu-ray purchase a little while ago: The Die Hard Collection.
