  1. it is hard to tell. wilcher, just incase you dont know: there is a difference between ram (often called memory) and hard drive space. the ram (or memory) is where you computers stores information it needs right then. for example when you work out some math equation in your head, such as 5x10+6-1, you would first work out the 5x10 usually. you would then store the answer (50) in your head and work out the next bit, which is +6. you would then store the answer (56) in your head and work out the final piece, -1, giving you the final answer of 55. that is exactly what the ram in your computer is for, except not for your brain but for your processor so it can store information while it computes other information. your hard drive one the other hand stores data that is to be kept forever, or until you delete it, it gets deleted by something, or your hard drive dies. data on your hard drive also doesn't get lost when you turn your computer off. the reason for ram is to be somewhere to store information short term that is quick to access. reading or writing to your hard disk takes alot longer than ram, and if you somehow didnt have ram but managed to replace it with space on your hard drive your computer would be extremely slow.
  2. do some searching for it on google and you may find an answer. if you get my drift you wont need to pay jagex the membership. why should jagex charge you money to connect to their computers when you can connect to so many other computers for free? ;) but really buy that burger instead of the month of membership!
  3. you sound like my computer illiterate dad. as soon as its a few years old and trhe registrys crammed full of [cabbage] and the drives full of files that havnt been used in one and a half years and it has slow boot times, or it gets a virus from my brothers many adventures downloading unsafe things of all descriptions in his own time, its time to throw it out and fork out the $$$ for a new rig. well the fact is that isnt true. chances are there is nothing wrong with your computer that cant be fixed by backing up the files you want (i recommend MozBackup btw, it done a great job of saving all my firefox saved passwords and history etc. only works on Firefox though) and reformatting. judging by your posts and computer knowledge and the problems your having i would say reformatting would be the thing to do. I reformatted a few weeks ago and after i was done reinstalled all the things i was using etc and currently have 99GB of my 142 (well 160 but windows doesn't recognize it all) free. before i was struggling to find enough space to install anything else. i honestly don't know exactly where it all went.

a really good post. i was going to read it days ago but just got round to it
  5. but the problem there is most people do download it, myself included. not the kiddie porn or anything but music from limewire or things from torrents etc. image how much legit stuff could be blocked if they somehow manage to stop torrents. and anyway, no matter how illegal it is, im going to continue to download music from limewire because im not interested in paying a record company to stamp out cd's, when it was the artist that created the song. im also not interested in paying big dollars for software that i use myself for educational purposes. if the goverment wants to block kiddie porn thats fine by me, but everything else they class as illegal that goes with it.
  6. where the bloody hell are ya? (click me plz!!! ) come to australia! we would be happy to educate you and for you to educate us about where you come from, im sure! but if you really cant then i have no idea what country to go to out of the ones you listed. Personally i wouldn't be interested in going to any of them 3, i just love where i live to much, i couldnt miss it for a year. but thats just my personal opinion. EDIT: when i finished watching that last vid i posted i found this one in the previews for others at the end: http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=yMYk_k6T9dY&NR=1 it goes for a while but there were even a couple of things in their i didnt know (such as we invented the cure for anthrax, we had the first blackbox, and a few others (those facts start at about 6:15 in the vid))
  7. i hope that they dont class torrents as illegal material, because technically any site that hosts torrent files isnt doing anything illegal, but the goverment wont look at it that way.
  8. that is [bleep]ing [cabbage]! even our own [bleep]ing government is going corrupt now. you cant beleive how pissed off i am reading that. ill happily help you distribute whatever fix you make for it (if you manage to make one). stupid labour. hope they dont get their plan through.
  9. first of all i dought it jagex's fault. dont call them uncool (even though they are) just because you cant work out whats wrong with your settings. and your reply to Pika_Tim_Tam was a bit odd. first your asking him why he posted if he wasnt going to help, and then thanked him for his help. as for the solution to your problem, hurry up and switch to firefox. i cant believe people still dont get how much better other browsers such as firefox are over IE. if its even remotely possible for you to use firefox then why dont you switch? when you use it a bit you will never want to turn back.
  10. why do thousands of ants work every day digging holes for them to live in and collecting food for their queen to eat? their nest will eventually be drowned out with water, or some kid burning them with magnifying glasses, or a elephant standing on it, or something completely different. in the long run their existence is isn't achieving anything more than some turned over soil, but they do it because thats what they do and have always done. somehow doing what they do makes them feel good, or makes some chemical produce in their brain as a reward for doing those good things for their queen. we are the same. their is no real point to our existence that will last very long on the large scale (even if we do cause global warming or something whos going to care when where miliseconds before the next big bang?) we evolved purely by coincidence. there could have been close to infinity other possible outcomes of our universe, and we just happened to be the one that did come out. the meaning of life for everyone everywhere is to do whatever makes them happy. that could be anything. if a terrorist decided it makes them feel good to nuke a nation and kill millions of innocent people, that's what they will most likely do, unless they are stopped by other people who feel good when they stop millions of people dieing. in other words our point to life is what we and our upbringing make it, it is not one set thing, and it different for everyone.
  11. im download via torrent right now and im getting 155kbs which is about as high as i get anyway on my connection. i didnt try downloading directly from the server but im assuming the torrent will be faster for anyone wanting to download
  12. not sure about the battery problem but im assuming your problem is something like this: http://blog.hi-tech-sw.net/2008/09/29/l ... ecognized/
  13. as for what information to post just post absolutely everything and if you dont know something get CPU-Z and use that to find anything you dont know. also be absolutly sure your downloading the right drivers, and remove any existing drivers from add/remove programs before you install new ones.
  14. i remember getting something like winantivirus a while ago. not sure if thats what it was but it had a thing in the tray and kept making them tray messages popup and had windows poping up telling me to install all sorts of bogus programs with unbelievably stupid and fake sounding names. i forget exactly how i removed it but i found this page on google for the couple of you with it: http://www.411-spyware.com/remove-win-antivirus-2008 not sure if it works or not
  15. have you considered the possibility that whatever the hyperlink is pointing to doesn't exist? whoever put the link there may have made a typo or the file may have been deleted/moved. please show us the page and what your trying to download so is firefox the only way to download it? if it is, i suggest to tipit they find a way to do it on internet explorer i suggest to you that you switch to firefox. trust me, use it for 2 days and as soon as you get used to the button locations you will NEVER want to go back. firefox also has alot of security and performance benefits over IE
  16. if you are it will have "safe mode" written across the top and bottom of the screen, and you most likely wouldn't be able to use any network (which means you wouldnt have internet access) unless it was booting to safe mode with networking. have a better look around the themes thing
  17. except for the being a women yourself part all that is exactly what applies to me. there's a hard-core vegan (like really into teh vegan thing) that has the ribs showing that lives across the road from me. its disgusting.
  18. is AVG really that bad? maybe i should switch to avira
  19. If your brother managed to open it up, then you are pretty much screwed. You should never mess with a hard drive. No idea about any of the other stuff, I can't understand what you are saying. im also hoping your brother did not actually open the hard drive itself. if he did then you better start copying your files to a portable drive or burning them onto discs now. its only a matter of time before a bit of dust get in the way and your hard drive crashes. also as has been said use full stops please!
  20. best firewall: comodo best adaware remover: Adaware 2008 and spybot S&D combined virus remover: I use AVG Free myself but many people say NOD32 is the best, but you have to pay for it i think. im not saying avg's the best but it certainly gets the job done nicely for me, never had any problems.
  21. First of all i have some personal constructive criticism about your choices (good idea to read it) i would put comodo firewall above zonealarm. I dont have any trouble with any nagging, and i have it on safe mode. the defence+ feature it comes with i have disabled though. it asked you like it should, but it doesn't keep nagging you over and over every second about the same thing. also there's absolutely nothing wrong with spybot S&D. if it did think your windows installer or whatever was spyware and tagged it then you shouldn't have been stupid enough to not go through the list after the scan (THIS IS BEFORE IT DELETES/CHANGES ANYTHING) and untick whatever it was that shouldn't have been ticked. the resident application that runs 24/7 i also find great. im not really surprised you didn't go through the list though with your comment on how AdAware 2008 is so not user friendly. Its extremely user friendly, simply load it up, click update to check definitions (and update if outdated), start a scan (about 3 clicks and 5 seconds of your time) and finally check what it found (which you obviously don't do with spybot S&D) and remove it. the time adaware takes to scan isn't really a problem. its not like it takes all year. i would prefer it take a while than it miss something that could steal my bank account details or something. also ive never used and never plan to use winpatrol but hijackthis is user friendly and anyone with half a brain could operate it Now that's all that done, i have to say you could at least source where you got some of them opening paragraphs for each section from with a link something like this: [source] just in case you forgot ill list where each of them italic paragraphs you copyed came from: *Malware remover: http://www.windowsreference.com/free-ut ... dows-user/ (which also appears to have been copied from Wikipedia. that is 3rd hand info your using) *Firewalls: http://solo1685.spaces.live.com/Blog/cn ... wsignin1.0 These were found with a simple google search and finally (you may not be able to help this) your English grammar is a bit off at times. English may not be your first language in which case just ignore this, its not your fault. if it is and your only typing like that to save time or something, don't, i had to read several bits a couple of times to get what you were trying to say. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Thats all the criticism over, which i hope you read. You have done a good job of making this guide but there are a few things which need improving. overall good job and good on ya for having a go! no ones perfect and im sure if i was to write a guide now you could find something wrong with it, but overall it was good for a first guide!
  22. Alright. You win. I see you've played knifey-spooney before  you bet me to it! thats what i was about to post
  23. internet explorer is junk and shouldn't even be classified as one of the leading web browsers in my opinion, get rid of it now. its very possible it may have just been user error your password was stolen. are you sure it was a keylogger or are you just guessing?
  24. most likely covered in land because we evolved far enough to work out some gas we could pump into the atmosphere to fix global warming or something and it didn't work and ended up thickening the ozone layer so much that the earth heated up enough so that water cannot remain in its liquid form. thats just a wild guess if it is anything like it is today, the land certainly wont be in the same positions.
  25. how does different air/fuel mixtures affect the combustion of various flammable products in a spud gun what to do: 1. get a can of several flammable things in a can (eg deodorant/hairspray) 2. make a spud gun (if you haven't already) 3. with each spray, spray different amounts of whatever it is in the chamber, screw the lid on quick and light it up. measure the distance the gun fires the spud/tennis ball etc 4. have some fun 5. do something so you will get some marks, such as work out how much stuff is coming out the end of the nozzle and how big the chamber is so you can get the air/fuel mixture ratio and then work out what ratio makes the spud fly the furthest distance NOTE: make sure the spud gun is positioned on the same angle each fire, using a spud/ball of the same weight and shape, and its not raining or the wind is blowing (which could effect it)
