Saw this (and yes, it IS the first time I logged that character on since Easter), east of Edgeville... placed the screen so the bridge can be seen at the top. The object is a pulsing white blob, does not appear to have any exaimine option or anything - I remember spotting it during Easter and thought it had something to do with the event, but it's still there, The picture catches it at maximum, it continually pulses from invisible to maximum.

Also a question of degree (no pun intended). Dropped into liquid nitrogen = frozen very quickly, maybe too quickly to hurt. Slow hypothermia = feel the cold, then drift into unconsciousness. Consumed (almost instantly) by fire/explosion = I guess it would hurt, momentarily Smoke inhalation = What kills most people in a fire, dead before you get burned (fortunately). "Burning at the stake" seems a particularly barbaric punishment. Anyway, if I had to face my end, I don't care so long as it's quick... ground zero of a nuke, rather than surviving for a while would suit me.

Random events seem to "barrage" a certain area at once - the Karamja pier can be a real hotspot. It is not always repetetive actions, sometimes the first time you do something (though possibly on the first break from repetition) seems to be just as hot. Had bob 2 or 3 times now, always fishing. Bob seems to rare anywhere else, other than disturbing mage trainers. The fishing spot though: Had: Sandwich lady, frogs, certer, Bob, Mime Seen: Cap'n hand, drunk dwarf, Drill demon. I got my drill demon at Aubury's teleport, along with several lost & founds. My firm belief is that an area is either targeted (and groups tend to attract that) or not, I'd say whenever you see a random, you are more likely to get it yourself if you stick around.

On hitting level 50, you could start superheating mithril in a mine that has mithril and coal (mining guild or Hobgoblin). Superheating that way brings back more potential XP per run since it converts 1 mithril and 4 coal into one bar, making one bank run equal to 4+ (not 5, since you lose some spaces). In terms of ore usage, Mithril is no better than Steel, actually slightly worse for XP, so if you carry the ores back, better to stick to Steel, especially as iron is faster to mine. When you can do better Mithril items (and you need to reach the Kite shield at level 62 for this), the alch value is then higher than for steel plates, giving a greater return per nat rune. This is a 3 bar item, so uses 12 coal and 3 mith, compared to 10 coal and 5 iron for the steel plate - still 15 ores, but no fast ones. Two handers at level 64 are definitely worth switching to, alching at 1560 and still a 3 bar item.

I guess you have to mine coal in the guild, mine or buy iron to go with it, then make and alch steel plates - if you make them in Horvik's, then you can economize on nat runes if the buying price there is better than alch - the cost of a nat (unless the objective is also to train magic by alching). Put the cash remaining after buying more nats toward additional ores. Not a lot more you can do in F2P, while you can make a profit on smelting steel bars, it's rotten XP compared to smithing them.

Advanced Monster Blocking (links 13 Jan 2006) (AOW discuss)

That explains a lot, particularly the "stuck on a corner" thing. -
killer prices ( and tips on how 2 get con exp and money woo)
Doomster replied to evil_angel's topic in General Discussion
Don't forget steel bars... So the free construction materials are: 1. Plank spawns 2. Nails (smith your own) 3. Clay 4. Limestone bricks (mine & craft) 5. Steel bars (if mined & smelted) To continue the free theme, that would also mean doing all the bank runs yourself, no servant. -
Where: I'd guess Lumbridge, maybe in the castle, or perhaps extra floors in the church. Armour: Since this is intended for low levels, no stat requrements, and possibly no stats either. Perhaps a special amulet. Monsters: Got to be suitable for low levels, unless they are variable level, though not as trong as a random guardian. Security: Seems the announcement already says it will be the doors, pinching an idea from Knightmare ... the "truth gate", where a question had to be answered correctly to open it. Other issues: Item Reclaim: If the special item is lost, can it be reclaimed from an NPC, or can the event be repeated. Event... this does rather feel like a "holiday event" with no timeframe. Higher level monsters could be met on higher levels, if the items collected before give the power to defeat them - the object of these monsters is not to try to kill the player, but to keep them interested - a Lesser demon killing you while the door questions you about a PIN would not go down well

need help on crafting in f2p and smelting in f2p
Doomster replied to mark63534's topic in Help and Advice
Mine silver, smelt, make tiaras = smithing & craft XP For crafting XP with no competition for materials, mine clay at the dwarven mine, walk to the monastery fountains and wet it (use multiple water containers of the same type, even clay bowls, and they all fill), then go to the barbarian village and make clay bowls. Drop the bowls while walking back to the mine, repeat ad nauseum! -
Boot to the recovery console from the CD. It shouldn't inherit any settings from Windows, so if it still screws up, it's very deep, maybe the keyboard controller hardware. Another thing, if using a PS/2 or AT format (small/large round connector) keyboard, try a USB one.

Construction, Oaks - another autoing fiasco about to happen?
Doomster replied to Doomster's topic in General Discussion
One annoying thing... I WANTED a tree spirit, carried two lines of food, wore full armour, carried best weapon, ready to fight it for the chance of a better axe. And all I got was one axe split, one ent, and a drunken dwarf -
Construction, Oaks - another autoing fiasco about to happen?
Doomster replied to Doomster's topic in General Discussion
Just hope they don't do anything stupid like "pure oak" - the updates sure seems to have knocked down the autoers, more than "pure ess" did. Got 60k for 600 oaks (was collecting 1k, but hit level 41 and decided to go looking for a rune axe). Oaks were trading at 100 gp, Willows at 30 - mind you, air running would probably be faster gp. -
Perhaps: Recipe for Disaster

It is uncertain if they ever drop clothing in F2P. They seem to be tough, Shades have killed me more times than any other random. Probably the best way to fight them, is to carry mage kit, stackloads of cheap fire strikes, and bury bones near a fence. Dodge behind the fence, then rightclick and re-attack. Range can also be used in this position, but the combat normally takes long enough to allow arrow stealers to creep in. Of course, with about 1/4 load of good food, best weapon and best armour, you can probably melee them - use prayer too.
-
Having quietly chopped away at Oaks to burn for pointless firemaking XP, to raise my woodcutting, and to cook lobbies at Karamja... Surprised to see the Oaks now as busy as the Willows - then realised... Oaks are now used for Oak planks in construction, having formerly only been useful for a small band of fletching levels. Not sure if all the players at the Oaks are autos, from levels and kit, seems unlikely. Anyway, I'm now doing woodcutting levels and banking Oaks at a quiet spot that is a bit further from a bank (not telling you where) and aiming to take 500 or 1k to Varrock (World 1) and see if I get any takers.

Any cheapest way to lvl smithing lvl for f2p?
Doomster replied to soules83's topic in Help and Advice
Iron - yes, even without a ring of forging! On average, 6 iron ores should be 3 bars, at 37.5 XP each, smelted & smithed = 112.5 4 coal, 2 iron makes 2 bars, at 55 XP each = 110 Iron is faster to mine than coal, cheaper to buy than coal, but there are drawbacks. 1. A full load of iron means waiting for 28 furnace actions, averaging 14 bars, instead of just 9 actions for steel (also "smelt X" - 30 instead of "smelt 10") 2. Iron stuff is worth a lot less, so the iron route works better if you mine your own ore for free, though you also lose money if you smith steel instead of selling the bars, but bar making is the smaller part of the total XP. -
You'd have to get construction up to level 30 (minimum to use them) even if it would let you. Then both lamps and a touch more would take you to 39. Unlike normal Genie lamps, where the level * 10 xp favours use on higher skills, the flat 10k xp each favours use on lower (but mimum 30) level skills, depending on how tedious they are to raise by practice, and if there is any real point raising them. Looking from the lowest, could you herblore some more useful stuff if you raised that? Check an XP chart, and see how much difference 10k or 20k will make - the higher you start, the fewer levels it's worth

If you don't want "wasted" defence levels over 40 (in other words, a "rune pure"), then try to do it at level 33 defence, full addy / anti dragon shield - the extra defence from the quest will put you at/near 40. I'd go for melee, 40 attack and rune wep. Tele runes, for a quick escape (but if you plan on that, go and open the wall first, then reload with food if you lost too much). Good food... Lobster, Swordie, or at a pinch, the level 25 cooking stew (only 1 less healing than lobster). PS. If there is a good death drop from a previous victim, you MUST take it before you finish your fight, as you will be out of there if you win (and in Lumby, if you lose without teleporting first)

Tip.It Times Presents: How Official Are You?
Doomster replied to oddfaery2's topic in General Discussion
A backup trading world (P2P & F2P) is sorely needed, well actually, a complete revamp of the totally inadequate and chaotic trading system is needed, maybe an "auction room" where you could place items and specify a minimum price, with the offer available for a certain time. -
Only spotted it when I ran out of logs and came back with raw lobsters, went to see if it was worth seling them there instead of cooking. That spawn is FAST, maybe apron bombing is a possible alternative to cabbage bombing, and boon if there's a crazy apron collector around.
-
Cheap mage training... more expensive, but faster, is teleporting - that's why you sometimes see a player repeatedly teleporting to the same place. Actually, at level 61, curses would be very slow training, as they can only be cast singly from the spell menu - more useful at the lower levels, weakens from level 11 and curses from level 19. Alching is another one, and picking the right items to alch, or buying stuff at less than the alch return, can mean you break even or at least cut the losses. All these methods train magic without HP, so work well if mage is secondary, but leave you far too light in HP if you only train mage.

F2P Pure: Get 43 prayer self-sustained?
Doomster replied to hazardmaster's topic in General Discussion
43 is 5 (and a bit) combat levels, not 3. Prayer is like the dark side of the force... powerful it is, and quick to join you in a fight, but let you down, it will. I'd say that with prayer charged you are stronger for the same combat level (no prayer). The downside, is that unless you continually work out around an altar (F2P) or carry prayer pots (P2P), then after one prayer assisted combat, you are carrying a combat level penalty. -
Pirates treasure... Fed up with walking to Varrock because you don't have a white apron ? Just visit the fish shop, there's a spare one on the hook there, and the fastest respawn I've ever seen.
-
If you are a pure, DO NOT select the "long range" style of attack, as it also trains defence - not sure if it has any effect on the actual range. The usual would be to carry a short and a long, using the short for speed and the long for drawing in or catching an escaper
