  1. From what I can see, removing it would be both good and bad, so I voted to increase it but keep some regulation.
  2. I can't really comment on the rest, but it's kind of hard to sum it up into one of those categories. A lot of the way we work is detailed here http://forum.tip.it/topic/277517-moderator-spotlight/ Basically if there is an offence reported, and we as the moderator who sees the report thinks that yes, an offence has happened, they will take the appropriate action. A thread in the wrong forum will be moved, a thread which has derailed into flames will usually lead to moderators sending warnings to those who instigated it and/or prolonged it etc. We then have a forum in which every piece of communication between a moderator and a forum user is posted. For example, if I were to be warned for flaming and it was my first offence, there would be a topic created titled something along the lines of "Danqazmlp - Flames". It would then have a link to my profile, a link to the posts in question (Which are all moved to a forum specifically for posts and threads linked to in these threads) and a copy of the warning sent to the user. If it were my second offence, there would already be a thread for me, which would contain my first offence. The new post in it would then contain all of the above except the link to my profile as it would already be in the first post on the thread. This means that we can easily see any history a forum user has, any communications with moderators or administrators and any bans that may have occurred. In some cases where a warning isn't taken but a user may have done something bad, that may also be noted such as "Danqazmlp got in a flame war today 'link here'" This is often why a 'clean' forum user can often get banned without looking like they have done anything as all the posts which we deem against the rules will always be removed to our evidence forum. On appeals, there is a specific forum where appeals go to. a new appeal will create a new topic with everything given in it, all the information and all the information on the account in question, including a link to their topic of warnings if needed (Appeals for things such as forgotten passwords go to the same area). These topics are then viewable by the administration team and they will then decide whether to accept or deny the appeal once they have come to a decision. Sometimes these appeals can be open for a while due to a split decision or more evidence being gathered. This allows them to come to an informed decision on the matter.
  3. It's simple but I actually found it funny.
  4. Are you sure you didn't confuse it with this? :P That is exactly where I saw it before. :P Jad and Corp are like twins. I did exactly the same. The thought of "Wasn't this red last time I looked?" went through my head. Blown away yet again.
  5. They are incredibly good. I Think the Sphere of sight you made is actually closer to their own concept art than the one they ended up with. Definitely my favourite.
  6. Accusing anybody of cheating will be removed and warnings sent for it, friend of a moderator or not. I do not know of the instance you are alluding too and have never heard of it, but if somebody was banned for accusing another of cheating, it would have been a coincidence if a friend of a moderator was involved.
  7. I agree those Renaults need better race pace. Those two are driving the wheels off those cars and those starts are over the top. It's like they have an afterburner for a few seconds, they just shoot forward, even Button had a word to ask about it after the race to Heidfeld. Just imagine if Kubica was in one of those. Although with both Renaults now having a 3rd position podium, it's hard to see which Kubica should take over from. My word, the crash with Petrov was so bad it was almost funny, he must have been at least a metre off the floor, surely it must have hurt his back, with enough force to break the steering clean off. Also fun seeing how far forward Heidfeld got at the start, then how far back he went through pits, then how far forward he got through pure consistent driving. Aaaah I just love the Renaults at the moment, they are really mixing the races up and giving so much entertainment. Webber was massively impressive without KERS. If you were to add up all the time he would have lost through the race you can be he would have been on the podium. Starting to get a bit bored of Vettel winning. Also I would love to know just how many times Schumacher and Koboyashi passed each other. It seemed that every other lap one was passing the other.
  8. That is the case currently and people have been banned in the past for over-reporting things which didn't need reporting. Moderators will not take an action if they do not agree with what the reporter says. They will look through the thread to find the post reported in it's context. The problem is that this forum is used by many people, from all walks of life and of all ages. Some like you don't mind flaming as much and can deal with it, whereas others do not like to see it and find it ruins the forum for them. The compromise has to be made somewhere to please the larger number of people. Not seeing flaming won't put you off the forum but seeing it will put some off. It is then logical to remove the flaming.

This is where it all really comes down to personal opinion and, morals/ethics. Some, such as me will say that it is still a competitive game and that cheating is still cheating so shouldn't be done, even though people aren't immediately directly effected. Others will say that because so few are effected, it is basically not harming anybody and skipping a part of the game that isn't fun. Edit: To Ring: Editing somebodies argument isn't really a good way to convey an argument at all. Online games are often played as a challenge as the main enemies are players who offer a much greater challenge than AI. Having those other players cheats will ruin the game for them. In Runescape's case, some players find entertainment in having rare items or getting higher on highscores. It is after all, a high fantasy MMO. The aim is to be the hero. If everybody can be the best hero with no effort, it spoils the adventure of the game. When I play Baldur's gate, the adventure of gaining rare items and leveling up is what makes the game for me, not actually being those levels. The same translates to runescape for many players.
  10. [qfc]93-94-674-62645381[/qfc] We don't only support them, they even have their own code. It was done because there were numerous phishing attempts made by giving fake RSOF links.
  11. I never have no. I don't agree with cheating in any online game. It defeats the point of competing with other players. I may as well play a single player game if I want any easy game with no challenge.
  12. Is that dangerous area of clan wars still there? (The one people use to lure). If so, hopefully this updates clan wars means it will be removed.

I am pretty against bots, and I am one who is pissed that Jagex hasnt taken more action against botters and this is my statement. Cheating on a video game, multiplayer as it is does not mean anything for morality in real life. I repeat - ones morals dont matter in a virtual world outside normal social interaction (such as offensive language and threats and things in that nature). Cheating on runescape represents your morals as much as 200m thieving xp does. Cheating on runescape can result in your account being banned but it does not represent real morals, for example if I was to bot on runescape would I be inclined to act in a less moral way offline? not likely. I know this isnt directly what you said but this is in part response to you supporting the OP of the previous thread on this topic. I feel that anyone saying that runescape shows your morals (outside of social interactions such as offensive language/racism/threats/stealing from players *lures and scams*) that the burden of proof is on them. Also how is cheating on a video game any different then having fictional illegal activities on a game, killing/stealing/etc? At the end of the day I hope that you realize that Runescape is just entertainment, a TV show that we all get to play a part in, it doesnt represent real behavior. Cheating in an online game can be seen as a social interaction which you say, which means that it does show your morals. There is a difference between something which happens in the confines of a game, such as killing x gangster, shooting x alien, buying x weapon, doing x race, and going outside of the confines of the game to cheat in it when competing against other players. Basically what mask said, it is real behaviour by a person. You aren't really killing things, but you are really cheating.
  14. Is that an updated clan wars arena?

Cheating is always unacceptable within a competitive environment. Solitary games that offer no competition to other players are the only place cheating is allowed, but then the only person you are harming would be yourself. If you cheat in an MMO, you will be looked down upon by the majority for having an unfair advantage. If you cheat in an online FPS, you will be looked down on by the majority for having an unfair advantage. If you cheat in a game of football, you will be looked down upon by the majority for having an unfair advantage. If you cheat in a game of cards, you will be looked down upon by the majority for having an unfair advantage. However If you cheat in a single player FPS, you are only having an unfair advantage against AI and computer players therefore are only spoiling the game for yourself. It is always morally and ethically wrong to cheat and gain an unfair advantage over other people in a competitive environment.

Moved to VG&C Cheating in a single player game harms nobody, and does nothing but harm your own personal experience of the game and how it was intended to be played. I'm interested to see the comments 'around these parts' to the morality of cheating in an online game however, I suspect it will be vastly different to that found on the Runescape boards.
  17. I would actually say that it is under moderated. You have to remember that we aren't corporate suits coming to the forum to police it, we are all just users of the forum such as yourself who together make a very wide ranging opinion base. The majority of moderators and regular users have complained that flaming and spam has gotten out of hand in the past months. The problem is those flaming and spamming. There are a few users (I will not name names) who toe the line between breaking rules and not breaking rules, which we cannot ban due to fear of backlash, meaning they go un-punished on the forums for a long time adding to flame and spam. These users ruin threads, not the locking of them. If you see spamming, personal insults and flaming, report it but don't respond to it. Unfortunately, many people do respond leading threads to become nothing but a place where people cannot discuss.
  18. I am SO glad that they have their "super secret" (read: "non-existent") method of bot detection. Wow -- we're all SO impressed over hear, I can tell you! It's like, you got this whole "secret" thing that's, you know, secret and uh ... well ... Apparently, with every 100 bots "captured" each Jmod & Pmod will be awarded a super-secret-decoder-ring ... It would be idiotic for them to describe their systems. They are a trap for bots, letting them know where the trap is and how it works would make it less effective. Uh huh -- sure. And describing how Santa Clause manages to make it all the way around the world in one night, distributing toys to good children all over the planet, doesn't make IT any less effective -- or believable for that matter. Sorry but your example makes no sense whatsoever to me. They don't keep their systems secret to make them more believable, they do it to stop bot makers from creating their systems around their detection systems. Some may already be able to and experienced bot makers may already know the in's and out's of their system, but many also will not which keeps it effective. Jagex are in a very sticky situation that is very difficult to get out of. I doubt there are many options at all to remove them without heavily impacting on the real players of the game. They are basically stuck between a rock and hard place, bots or ranters at game changes. Sophisticated bots are incredibly hard to get rid of through detection systems as they can be programmed to act very human-like. This is why they do need active in-game banning through things like this event-type thing.

  20. I never have a chance at all with Asian games.
  21. No, as morals by an individual can be opposed to the morals of another. However, the morals of the majority, and in this case which is to cheat or not to cheat. Humanity has known on the whole for thousands of years that cheating is morally wrong. There may be a tiny minority who cheat, and then an even smaller minority of them which think cheating is morally right, but as we have to live by the rules which the majority want, cheating is immoral. Plain and simple. Edit: Football is just a game, but if you decide to use your hand to score a goal, you will be punished and people will be angry with you. It may be a game, but that doesn't mean rules don't apply. Hell, that is what makes it a game. If there were no rules, there would be no game.
  22. The Runscape rules are not a bunch of points Jagex pulled from nowhere. They are a set of rules which are in line with the majority of MMO games out there, in line with the majority of people's morals and therefore can be counted as the moral rules. Botting is using an outside advantage for personal gain, which is something against the rules in every competition, sport and everything I have come across in life. People seem to be removing the point between botting and immorality. It isn't that Botting = immoral It is that Botting = cheating = immoral If botting were not against the rules, it would therefore not be. It is the cheating part that makes botting bad. Whether you agree with the rules or not, you should not cheat, in life, in games or anywhere. I cannot see how people can argue the opposite to that, it is simple logic. However, the OP's original point about it transferring to real life is what is debatable and what the thread is about. On that point, desensitization is a real thing. If a person is in contact with something enough their mind becomes less opposed to it, allowing them to do it more. A simple google search will show you that so don't come asking for proof. This isn't the same as for example violence in games, as the majority of sane people will realise that they are not actually hurting people, but hurting something that doesn't exist. In Runescape however, the cheating is, even if minimal, hurting people. Could this then lead them to disregard people's feelings in the future more often or to cheat more often? That is the question, and until somebody does some research on it, everything said either way will just be pure opinion, so asking for facts is pointless.
  23. Cheating isn't a rule, cheating is the breaking of the rules. The rules laid down by Jagex are there to give every player the same fair chance at playing the game as every other player. In a game world where every player can interact, these rules act very much like laws in the real world, stopping player A from impacting on Player B in a way that may be harmful to player B. We are only talking about Online games here as single player games have no impact on another person. Now when Player A actively decides to cheat, they know full well that they are doing so. Thus they have stepped outside of the moral code Jagex have laid out. Runescape in a way is a miniature version of life. Cheating in real life can have huge repercussions whereas in Runescape they can be smaller, but the effects are still there to the other players on the other side of the screens. In terms of what you sign up to play, within jagex's rules is right, outside is wrong. That is an undeniable fact. Which means as soon as you cheat, you are in the wrong.
  24. It's worth a try. It could be that the virus went through your current virus protection when it was installed and covers them, but as it isn't installing constantly isn't looking for new antivirus software.
  25. I bet they botted their straight A's. Intelligence has no link to morals so that is a pointless thing to bring up. As somebody said a page back, it is desensitising people to cheating. It doesn't suddenly make somebody a law breaker, but if you spend enough time somewhere cheating, lying and scamming, it is logical that will have some effect on your morals elsewhere. Prove that botting desensitizes people, morally. Why is it okay that you can throw around such accusations without proof? If I didn't know better, I'd think you're just trolling. Also, prove that botting is inherently wrong and not just wrong because Jagex says it's wrong. Oh please, don't throw around the trolling accusations so lightly. Botting is wrong because it is cheating. The rules set by Jagex for their game are the rules whether you like them or not. Violating those rules is cheating. Sorry but there really is no way to talk to you if you don't understand that most basic fact. Also, there is no specific proof for botting desensitizing people, as it would be stupid to think there is. However it is a well known fact in psychology that prolonged exposure to something will desensitize a person to that thing. In this case it is cheating. It may not have a huge impact but the impact is there. If you want proof please find it yourself because I'm not wasting my time showing you something you know perfectly well just because you fancy arguing.
