We call that murder, and it's no different from killing a hobo for his organs just because you are more powerful than him.

What would you call killing a sheep 15% human then? A quarter-murder?

Not at all thats disgraceful!

Id call it a 'just over an eighth murder' :P

A: a clone is 100% human.

B: I'd actually consider killing it an act of mercy upon the suffering it was brought into.

And as I said before, 15% is useless as far as organ transplants go. I hope when the human test subject dies, the scientists are rewarded for their gross arrogance.

Messing with nature to prevent disabilities is one thing, creating half human half sheep is completley different. It's disgusting to play with nature to the extent that it may come too.

With so many trees in the city you could see the spring coming each day until a night of warm wind would bring it suddenly in one morning. Sometimes the heavy cold rains would beat it back so that it would seem that it would never come and that you were losing a season out of your life. But you knew that there would always be the spring as you knew the river would flow again after it was frozen. When the cold rains kept on and killed the spring, it was as though a young person had died for no reason. In those days though the spring always came finally but it was frightening that it had nearly failed.

Yeah, I think it would be a crime to kill a human clone, but that's not the main emphasis on cloning these days. It's all about cloning organs, not humans. First off, it's expensive and has a high failure rate. Second, it raises a huge ethical problem. Third, by the time it takes to clone you, you might be dead from whatever problem you had by the time the clone grows old enough to "give" you the organ.

No, don't worry about cloning humans. It's all about cloning organs.

ADD: If it looks like a sheep and acts like a sheep, it's a sheep. Who cares about what it's thinking if we can get human organs from it?

As far as I can see, 15% is just the beginning. I'm sure they'll be striving for something >75%

The benefits could be good, though looking at the big picture it is definitely a waste of resources.

Average overweight, alcoholic, lazy American stereotype: "Hey I don't need to take care of my body any more! If my kidneys fail I can get new ones! Yippy!"

Having the ability to create a surplus of organs is bad from an economist point of view. Even if the organs are regulated and cost alot of money, preventing people getting them who don't need it, people are still going to do what ever is possible to be lazy. Its the American way. A lazier American, a lazier America, a lazier economy.

These scientists like to use a media technique called tugging on your hear strings. They try to cloud the other possible bad outcomes with this technique. If someone or I needed a kidney I would want it to be available don't get me wrong. But people don't always see the bigger picture when just looking at their situation. Yes I would want nothing else, but I also wouldn't want to be thinking about the consequences of it. Which is normal when you can't see the bigger picture.

The human body rejects anything under 85%, and even at 95% compatibility the organ may still be rejected.

By the time they get to that point, the sheep is not even going to be able to survive without it's own organs. The genetically engineered organs will kill it, and it's short life will be full of PAIN.

And by that time, we are just short of a perfect chimera. Who knows, the thing might even develop sentient thoughts. And what are we condemning the thing to? The most painful death anyone can ever imagine.

That's why American hospitals won't just give it away for free, XplsvBam.

Riiiiight...

Posting before the religious morality group comes in and complains about...Everything.

Did you read the comments on the news article?

I serriously LOL'd at some of them.

@Bauke: it is no different than slaughtering them for meat.

They have the nerve to call this science!! Give me a total break. This is transmutation and is a crime against humanity. Who are these criminals. Arrest them now!!!

LOL.

This is fine with me, I don't have a problem with killing of sheep for lamb, and other products. This is the same. Actually, I see this as a step forward, we can know solve our shortage of human organs (breed the sheep, kill it, sell the meat, sell the wool, well the organs, little is wasted)

No it's just that you're being somewhat on the selfish side, you do realize sheep are living also? (no I'm not peta or some other gay hypocritical animal activist group)
...your just an average hippie.

I know they are living but we are better are you saying you wouldn't kill or even torture a sheep to survive because i would.

Oh, well, at 85% it probably won't look like a sheep anymore, will it? This has now been condemned by Continuum.

Still, growing organs themselves (which I believe can me done) is perfectly fine.

No cloned organ has ever been accepted by a human body. Don't hold your breath.

That's just a stupid thing to say. You could have amazing amounts of knowledge, yet not know when to use it.

Going back to the topic at hand... I don't support what's going on. I had a whole paragraph typed for an explanation, but it has already been said, and I find that stating my opinions just gets me into trouble. icon_smile.gif

I think a lot of you guys are seriously misunderstanding this. The sheep is 100% sheep. It hasn't been genetically engineered. It just has a lot of human cells transplanted into its own organs. This sheep couldn't exist if we switched around 15% of its chromosomes/genes with those of a human. Why does everyone want to stretch this into a "oh no we're making human-animal hybrids! What's next, a 50/50 walking talking sheep? Let's end all of this right now!"

To be honest, the article does call the thing a chimera in the very first sentence. That sets the whole tone.

Yeah, the article was really biased too and shouldn't have even created that tone. That's just bad reporting to influence readers like that.

Only because they don't understand science, and likewise, most people who read it do not either and will automatically think "OMG A SHEEP IS RUNNING AROUND ON TWO LEGS!...HUMAN LEGS! WE'RE ALL GOING TO DIE!"

Can't wait for these guys to try this on other animals, like spiders... or better yet: squirrels!

I think we may be repeating history. We probably had great technology and did it thousands of years ago and destroyed ourselves almost completely. Few humans survived and started over. That is why there are these myths of all these half human half animals.

Lol.... Read the comments on the article, they're hilarious.

Very interesting, i'm all for it if it is preventing the loss of human lives or suffering, and it works properly and all.

Does anyone else find it incredibly interesting that human beings have become such an outright dominant force on this planet that we actually care for 'animal rights?' I know I do. Do you guys think a lion would be sympathetic towards you while ripping into your intestines for sweet nourishment?

Of course, they don't have morality like we do and I'm not saying animal rights is a useless idea, but I just find it interesting. I actually believe we sould not treat animals like crap just because we 'can;' we should always have a reason, which we generally do.

Oh and my stance on the sheeps making us organs? In a perfect world it would work perfectly with no pain for a blissfully ignorant sheep and everyone would have a perfectly suitable organ to use. Some problems will be overcome by the refinement of the science and some (mostly morality issues) we will just have to get over if we actually want this technology as a race.
