I'm going to agree with everyone, in that the dark is fearable because the sense you rely on most during the day is taken from you. Also, in most media like movies or books, bad things come out of the dark, which can totally influence your actions and such.

As for me, Dark>Shadows

Why some people fear eating kebabs sober, they don't know what will happen.

That made me actually rofl. That quote is too true.

Now, I just went downstairs to get myself a Coke Zero to keep me awake whilst watching A Clockwork Orange (very violent, isn't it?), and unfortunetly for me, it was pitch black downstairs.

It's midnight here, and my parents went to bed a little while ago, turning off everything downstairs. And as I walked down the stairs into the darkness, I felt a lot of tension, and thought to myself, 'hey up, this could spark up the lately fairly boring Off Topic board!' [/ramble]

What is it about darkness that makes it so feared by our culture? I am not a religious boy, nor am I superstitious, and yet I have my apprehensions about darkness, and this seems absurd to me, what am I (almost) afraid of?

I think to myself, ghosts? Hah! The devil? Hah! Zombies? Hah!, I live in a safe neighbourhood, so crime isn't a worry, and despite all this I still reach for the light switch as soon as I can.

Is it simply because I have been brought up in a country where religion is widespread? I bring this up, because I can't see where else this fear of the dark has come from.

Or is it something deeper? Is there something about humans, or just me, that makes us fear what we cannot see?

At the risk of being overly scientific, my answer would be it's a biological mechanism to help us keep on our toes when our most valuable sense (sight) can't be used. If we aren't being stimulated by light, which alerts us to our surroundings and any possible dangers, we seem to stimulate, in our subconcious, images of dangerous things. Kind of our brains expecting the worst and being prepared for what may happen.

This isn't a definate answer, just my hypothesis.[/nerd]

You probaly have a good idea going on there, Warrior.

To classify my earlier post I dislike darkness when its pitch dark (to where I simply can not see. I hate the disorientness of moving in the dark).

I do like the night though, not pitch black but dark and perhaps illuminated by the moon/stars. It just seems theres a lot less going on then.

I'm also more of a night person and seem to be the most awake then.

I'm afraid of the darkness, too. There's nothing for me to be afraid of either.

It's just being deprived of sight for a while and you gain sharper other senses. It then allows your imagination to overwork and then you can imagine things that aren't there. A shadow cast by furniture can look like a person hiding.

It may also be a fear of the unknown. EVPs are out there, that can get someone afraid of the paranormal. There have been 'documented' photos/video 'proving' these strange mysterious events. My favorite show about the paranormal is 'Ghost Hunters.' I kind of find it amusing that they camp in a dark place in a house then every time they hear a creak, they all freak out and start cussing. It's so funny. Some of that looks real though... And if they're not hoaxes, then... :ohnoes:

I was terrified of darkness as a kid, aswell as small places (I still have a faint memory of my brothers trapping me under a blanket and jumping/beating on me). However, now I prefer it - but only in some conditions. I only like darkness if, say, it's bright and I turn to light off: This makes it so that there's no surprises. When you enter a pitch-dark room, it's the fear of the unknown that gets you. Even if you are 99.99% sure nothing is going to be there, there's always that slim chance there's something scary/icky there, like a big gross spider just waiting to pounce on your face. Or something.

I think one reason may be that when it is completely dark, there's usually silence. Breaking the silence is usually the slight creaks of the house or the wind or different things and when you hear those, your mind starts running crazy thoughts through your head. In any normal instance, you wouldn't even think about how a killer, ghost, etc. could be lurking around the corner but the dark tends to bring out those fears. Darkness is, simply, the unknown. Most people tend to fear the unknown.

On a side note, I love the night. I prefer the night. I don't prefer complete darkness. I also like overcast and rainy days. Sunlight is overrated.

Thats me right there. Sunny days are nice for some things but I find a cloudy/rainy day more relaxing.

Just about everyone is at least a little scared of the unknown and you don't know what's going on in the dark because you can't see anything.

The same reason why many people of the world fear things: The unknown. If you can't see around you it's less easier to predict what will happen. We humans always want to know. That's why some people fear death, they don't know what will happen. Why some people fear eating kebabs sober, they don't know what will happen.

However, fear can only be two things: an enemy of a friend. Befriend it. I love the dark :P

Because you actally realise your getting it all down yourslf when your sober?

They're a lot of reasons to fear it. Like 'doner' kebab? What exactly is that? Lamb? Dog? Rat? A hybrid?

doner... as in organ doner.. they dont use those kidneys and such in transplants..

I have no reason to fear the darkness. To me, darkness is an awesome thing, how it may blind you, and it may protect you. I want to reanact and exp. that almost happened to me:

When I was younger, playing hide and seek with some friends, in darkness...I was scared then. I was nine. The worst part is, I hid in the slums of the neighborhood. Stupidity. Anyway, hiding, minutes went by, then ten, twenty...An hour? Oh wait, no, my friend just got the crap beaten out of him by some dearranged drunk. Or at least that was his claim--and I believed him later when we played again while he was recovering.

That night was scary--some wacko drunk tried to throw some punches at me- but he was too drunk--and it was too dark. I took a rock--and kinds smashed his head (Only knocked him out though \' ) And got away. That night I overcame many fears of the dark--Almost being either a) Raped, B) kidnaped, or c) getting the crap beaten out of me. My other fear of the dark went away--it was too dark for the drunk to see me, so I learned to trust the darkness shield it offered to me.

Some of it was dramatized *Cough* all of it *Cough*. But the morale of the story--Darkness won't hurt you, never does, never will.

Hoping to get a new Signature (with matching avatar) soon. :D

In the meantime...Steam username: )I'll rewrite it later (add me if you want)

I hate dim light. everything looks creepy.

However, I love darkness. You cant see monsters, so I like to think they can't see you :P unless they have noturnal vision... but I try not to think of that!

[hide=]

tip it would pay me $500.00 to keep my clothes ON :(
But then again, you fail to realize that 101% of the people in this universe hate you. Yes, humankind's hatred against you goes beyond mathematical possibilities.
That tears it. I'm starting an animal rebellion using my mind powers. Those PETA bastards will never see it coming until the porcupines are half way up their asses.

Course I'm afraid. I try to think monsters can't see me even though its obvious any monster who LIVES in the dark can probably SEE in the dark!

I think its because when its dark you cant see anything, so you let your imagination take over and make the worst out of a harmless situation.

And because most people always fear what we dont know about, and since you cant see anything in the dark, its almost like walking into the unknown.

Thats what I think anyway.

I hate the dark btw :P
