Over the last few days, five administrators on the English Wikipedia got "hacked" and their accounts were used for malicious purposes.

 

 

 

The cause? The users used easy-to-guess passwords, such as "password".

 

 

 

Of course, RuneScape isn't Wikipedia, but that doesn't mean that you should use a less-secure password.

I do agree. Some people don't think they'll be picked to be "hacked" So they make stupid passwords.

Well, if my password was password i doubt i'd get "hacked" because who would even try it? Don't try out to see if my password is "password" because it isn't.. 8-)

1 million gold is about ÃÆââ¬Å¡Ãâã3.50

 

So take a average 126 of about 50mil (no I did not do any research on an average amount of money a level 126 has, feel free to post some)

 

 

 

50*3.50= ÃÆââ¬Å¡Ãâã175 + ÃÆââ¬Å¡Ãâã100-200 = ÃÆââ¬Å¡Ãâã275 - 375

 

 

 

Now let's say you can get the "hacker" software for free...

 

That's ÃÆââ¬Å¡Ãâã275 - 375 prophit.

Well, it doesn't matter what password you use, if it's not a common password. They use password crackers, that type all the common passwords, and changing their IP to try several types.

 

 

 

So yeah, no need to type a million letters at the end, just adding one letter in your pass is enough to stop those softwares to work.

 

 

 

Then again, theres the softwares to get info out of the website. Those would probably work with Wiki, but not with Rs(hopefully), if they secure their website.

 

 

 

And if you have a keylogger, then forget it, no matter how complicated it is, they'll figure it out :lol:

I seriously, seriously doubt very many people use pass crackers on RuneScape. Dictionary attacks take long enough and true brute force attacks take a very, very long time.

I just got an update that a fifth Wikipedia admin got "hacked".

 

 

 

Also, brute forcing is harder on RuneScape because: 1.) it takes a while for the login attempt to go through the Internet connection, and 2.) RuneScape blocks excessive failed login attempts.

 

 

 

However, from what I've heard people do brute-force. Instead of the "normal" brute force (trying different passwords on a single account), they do "reverse" brute-forces. They'll use one common password and try different accounts that might use the password.

 

 

 

I thinkt his is what may have happened with the Wikipedia admins.

 

 

 

Again, as long as you use a hard-to-guess password, you shouldn't have this problem.

Youd be surpised, you could make quite a bit of rl cash if you hacked someone with phats or rares.
