Is RuneScape getting too large?

Ok, so already runescape takes 20 seconds to load on my computer. (I got this computer a few months ago, its generally new. I have Verizon DSL connection)

Should Jagex go down with the graphic updates? With new graphic updates, new skills, new quests, you name it, this is making RuneScape very large. Should Jagex switch to a program other than Java that maybe is smaller in file size? Or should Jagex just cut down on the updates? Doesn't the majority of the RuneScape players not really care if Jagex makes the head of the Cow a little smaller, or the horn of the Unicorn a little sharper? Although a few people think RuneScape needs a lot of graphical updates, a lot of people think the game is fine how it is, they only care that the game works properly!

I am not saying that Jagex should cut all updates from the game. But I am saying that they should cut the updates to a minimum, throwing in a few quests a year, maybe one a month or so.

By the way, the slow loading is on Low Detail. I never play on high detail.

My computer is infected with no bugs or viruses.

I have also noticed that the ingame engine occasionally slows, and this message pops up:

"Loading, Please wait." or "Connection lost, attempting to reestablish."

Remember that I have a 4 month old computer, in other words, new.

With next to no programs installed to slow down the speed.

Post your thoughts.

what kind of pc do you have? playing on high detail? internet speed? belongs in Tech and Computers?

runescape only takes around 5 seconds to load on my computer... intel pentium 3 1005 MHz, download speed up to 500 kb/s and only playing low detail... (also using word, msn, 5 more sites at the same time...)

To the mods/admins: I don't think this should be moved. This thread could, with the right posts, become a discussion about however JAGeX should keep adding updates or not, and about however we players are happy with the current graphics/quests/skills of Runescape.

On-topic: I personally think that JAGeX doesn't need to update the game so much more now. A few updates a year would be just fine to me, actually. But only in the F2P world! I think P2P deserve all the updates they can get, because they pay for the game...And the updates!

But back to F2P. I'm very happy with the graphics of the game (Otherwise I would have started playing WoW ages ago :P) and also all the quests and skills. Shortly said; it's enough for me (Right now anyway, I might change in the future). I just want to keep going for my goals, and when I reach them I will just set new ones and go for those instead. This is one of the reasons to why I play Runescape.

The benefits of java are exactly the same as its drawbacks. Of course a multiplatform client written in C++ would perform much better and reduce the heat strain on your cpu, but very few people are being taught C++ today. It is a real shame, but most schools are teaching java almost exclusively now.

Humph. My computer is a Gateway. I play on Low Detail. Its a few months old, so RuneScape should run smoothly on it. My computer is not infected with any viruses/bugs.

Mods, if you think this should be in Computers category, feel free to move it, and sorry for the inconvenience if so.

Yes, C++ programming for RuneScape would speed up the process by a lot. Like you said, not many are teaching C++ anymore.

Although it would take FOREVER to code a game like RuneScape into C++, from my perspective.

Hmm... You guys aren't having problems?

Because I doubt it has anything to do with my computer, as it is fairly new.

Everyone gets the "Loading - Please Wait"

Runescape is based on a grid and everytime you pass through one of the grid lines you get that message.

I know that. I mean I get it when Im just doing my business, not when im passing through one of the grid lines.

I hardly think 20 seconds is anything to worry about. That's probably shorter than any normal game where you have to ESC through the logos/intro to get to the main menu. Have a scratch, blow your nose, I'm sure you can find something to do for 20 seconds.

I don't think updates should be cut. I would still be content with 1-2 minutes loading time; time enough to go and make a quick coffee or something.

Things that could affect:

* Your connection. Play with a modem and dl loads of stuff same time and you will face some slowdowns.

* How much ram do you have?

* Are your drivers (graphic card, java, etc) all up to date?

* Do you have heavy programs running at the backround?

Also it really doesn't matter when did you buy your comp. A brand new comp could be worse at all sectors than few years old. The main thing is that what is inside your "box".

Btw wanna tell me which OS has totally no bugs and can run RS? I definately wanna test that :P

The computer i normally play RS on is about 5-6 years old.

It never takes more than 10 seconds to loads onto RS.

P2P offers more and better ways of making money than f2p. That's one of the cons you just have to play with if you don't feel like having 1 bigmac meal less per month.

It is not my connection, with the purchase of our computer we purchased a new modem and connection service.

Runescape has always taken long to load for me. Maybe you guys... umm...

Ok, this thread isn't complaining about how slow it is for me. This thread is about how Jagex keeps putting in all these graphical updates and such, thus slowing down the game.

How do you reach to that conclusion? :-s

No one here is encountering any problems regarding long loading times..

The only time my loading slows down some is when I log on right after a new update, after that my loading time goes back to the 7 to 8 seconds and that is with high detail (i would never think of playing on low detail with dsl). So I dont think that they should cut down on the updates, they have never bothered my logging on speed. At least RS isnt like EQ and you wait 5 min for the dang thing to upload and have to click through several windows before you finally get to start playing

Current goal: Getting enough prayer pots to finish my last four quests.

I've always had a little bit of lag on RS while using iTunes, MSN and RS at same time. But i still think the game should be updated, think of the other people. :uhh:

Currently not active on RuneScape.

But if you look at the posts of all the other people in your topic you'll notice it isn't that slow. The problem could lie with your computer, but I doubt it. Like others have said, it's probably your internet connection.

That you have a new connection service doesn't say anything, since it can still be slow... But the problem could very well lie in your upload speed. A lot of isp's give people a high download rate, but a low upload rate. This would mean that information send from the runescape server to you won't take long to arrive, while information send from your computer (the command to walk somewhere for example) to the runescape server would have a delay.

Most of the time someones upload speed won't be low enough to cause major delays for simple commands, but if you are downloading or something like that it can get really messy. :P

And for the record, I have an old spare computer (800 MHz) which runs runescape perfectly in high detail....

And another bit of advice, making sure the runescape world you use has a server near you can make a lot of difference.
