Guitar Hero/Rock Band Discussion thread

The intro to TTFAF is easy for me now . . . I do it one-handed. Can't keep a combo but I can pass it every time. If I fail it's on the solos. I hear people all the time going "Well I could beat TTFAF if I could just do the intro." Uh. Right. Solos? They're not exactly cake.

I really recommend learning to tap. It really isn't that hard if you start to learn once your good, and it has so many benefits.

How the hell do you strum whilst doing it? :wall: Never figured it out.

You don't need to strum unless you miss, and then you can just elbow strum. Although if I miss in the intro I just restart :o

Ah, well, I think I'm gonna practice tapping tomorrow or something.

Been wanting to try to beat Through the Fire and the Flames. Haven't tried in like 3 months, though.

It'd be especially fun if I video taped myself playing it, show to my friends. They'll freak out, call me a god, then they'll be inspired and try to do it themselves.

The cycle happened when I beat One, when I started playing bass, etc.

There are, of course, many many ways to tap the intro, but how I personally do it (and how GHPhenom does it - liektehpmgzitmustbtehbestz!!) is to hold green with my non-fretting hand, elbow-strum, and use my fretting hand to just quickly press and release each note. It's highly consistent and easy to do (I've had to restart from 'tapping' too quickly - quickly enough to be before the timing window started >_>)... in my opinion

I wish I still had GH3, I just realized that is so much easier than how i always tried. I held green with my fretting hand and failed miserably, never though of holding green with my right and fretting with my left. Now I feel like a [wagon].

I don't think PS2 has online play. 360/PS3 has it though

Yep, and you can download a limited number of songs for Wii.

About the TTFAF discussion up there. I highly suggest going against "chicken strumming" as I call it. I've tried it when I was learning the intro to TTFAF and boy, it wasn't easy. Like Saidin said, keep your index finger HELD DOWN at all times during the intro (hold it during post insanity too) and then when you see the first note, strum with your right hand then immediately bring your right hand to help your left hand and start tapping.

You should be able to commence the first string of notes, allowing the hammer-ons to be hit, and you can hit the first two notes in the hammer-on sequence, red and yellow and then get your right hand to tap the higher frets. The key is you need to get REALLY familiar with your guitar peripheral to know the exact positions of the buttons because once you have to start watching the note highway, you really can't be looking down at your guitar anymore. Another tip is that if you want to do good and become consistent with the intro is to start the slowest, and gradually work your way up.

Oh yeah, and I forgot to say when they mean "tap", they really mean tap. The taps on the buttons should be really quick, or you can break your combo and you'll end up having to strum again.

Good luck to the future people attempting TTFAF.

P.S. My new high on that song is 602k.

Crap sorry I mean ps3 not ps2. How do I set it up on the ps3? I used to have access to xbox (my parents turned my old room in to a gaming room lol) but now I only have ps3 and "rock band" instead of guitar hero's band.

So the discussion about tapping the intro got me re-interested in learning a new way to tap it. My elbow-strum + non-fret-hand-on-green method is still the one that I can do most flexibly and consistently, but I just taught myself to tap the blue and orange notes. I strum and one-hand up until the first orange note, which is the first thing I tap, then tap every single blue and orange until the scales at the end. I just FCed the intro on full speed with that (started learning that tapping method about... an hour ago? I've been trying out other tapping methods during that time too, so it wasn't all spent on that).

As for those other tapping methods:

No tapping! = FC on Slow... but I've always been able to do that

Tapping only oranges = I get confused because I'm too used to tapping both blues and oranges (even though I only just started that o.O) but I nearly FCed on Slow

Chris' tapping method (alternating) = way too confusing... my best success with this was a 50 NS on Slowest >_>

One-handed, releasing after every green = near FC on Slowest. Yeah, I was bored.

Edit: Just FCed with the Blue/Orange tapping twice in a row... I know that's not exceptional, but considering I just learned it...

Double Edit: FCed twice in a row, messed up on third attempt, then FCed three times in a row after that with the Blue/Orange tapping... I may be able to get that consistent enough to be usable in normal runs.

I tap the same way Saidin does (green with no fretting hand, rest with fretting hand). The easiest way to learn how to play that way: rubber band trick (put a rubber band on the green note) this way you can have your other hand worrying about strumming if you miss until you get used to the fretting then you should be able to FC it.

It's the only thing in the game I tap pretty much, I do everything else one handed and I've FCed the intro to TTFAF one handed before :D

So, I played Guitar Hero III for the first time in a few months today.

Did some crud I wasn't able to do before. xD

4 Star The Way It Ends

5 Star Number of the Beast

4 Star Cliffs of Dover

Finally beat Take This Life

That means I'm only unable to play 2 songs on GHIII. TTFATF and Raining Blood...

I tried practicing tapping(looked it up on Google, suggested to practice by doing "My Name Is Jonas") and I can't tap at all. ._.

Awesome lecture in history class. My teacher is this eccentric old man who yells and jumps on desks a lot. We were discussing today the "big three" Cults of Personality (Hitler, Mussolini, Stalin). To get the point across, he brought in an Xbox 360 and GH3 and we spent the class taking turns playing Cult of Personality while he discussed and lectured on them. BEST....DAY.....EVER. I was also the only one to play on Expert, and I did my best run ever on my turn to play (96%).

Haven't a clue.

Any suggestions on what songs to practice tapping on? Not TTFATF, I tried and did horribly.

Good man, good man. I'd be the only one to actually pass it if my social studies teacher did that. :D

Anyways, I found one person(that I know in person) who says he's as good as I am on Guitar Hero. Unless he's bluffing or something.

Try TTFAF, in practice, slowest speed. Once you can FC it, move the speed up one, and repeat until you can FC or very close at full speed.

Hm, I tried doing that for maybe 30 minutes. I gave up because I couldn't even get the first two notes.

But, I'll try again tomorrow.

After about an hour and a half of practice I got up to a 100-note streak on TTFAF intro. Using the non-fretting hand to hold the green.

It was really frustrating for the first hour, while my fingers tried to get accustomed enough to the pattern to actually move fast enough to hit the notes on full speed after easily FCing it on Slow. Now with a bit more practice I can FC it easily.

So, I was playing "Knights of Cydonia" or however you spell it, and I tried tapping some parts of it. I can play the hammer-ons and pulloffs with one hand, but when I bring my strumming hand to the frets, I just mess up entirely.

Anyways, today my friend Jason and I decided to play 5 songs on World Tour Pro-Face off.

I won Pull Me Under, BYOB, Hot For Teacher and Schism.

And he won Beat It. :wall:

Can't believe I lost to him at Beat It.

Tapping Knights of Cydonia is eww, that'd be horrid.

Anyway, just finished my 12 hour RB2 marathon, didn't FC anything good really, <10 songs out of the lot I FCed, had a lot of chokes on songs I should have FCed but when you're playing songs once, especially after having played the game for such a long time it's easy to miss a simple thing.

I got a good response for GGaHT, 98% in the first solo (I usually FC it) and then 90% in the second, FCed the zig zags and the first half of the triplets at the end, rest of the misses in the solo were things I can normally hit and things that are impossible to hit :P Gold stared it, that's with Expert Guitar, Drums and Vocals :D

We probably GSed about 50 or so of the ~100 songs we played, 5*ed 40 of the others then the final 10 were less or we just failed and stopped playing that song.

So tonight I decided to squeeze:

[hide=Bulls on Parade (1st/1st)]BullsOnParade-2.png

I have played this twice in all of 2009 (both today). The run before this was 289,883. This is a tie for 1st.[/hide][hide=Story of my Life (1st/1st)]StoryOfMyLife-2.png

I managed to sit through this song. Many times. There's still 200 points left in there that I may go for eventually.[/hide][hide=Even Flow (1st/1st)]EvenFlow-3.png

This is 1st by 228 points :) Also, 240 points over the score Bj0rn said was about 220 points away from optimal ;)[/hide][hide=Same Old Song And Dance (1st/1st)]SameOldSongAndDance-5.png

One more tick than everyone else![/hide][hide=Anarchy in the UK (3rd/5th)]AnarchyInTheUK-2.png

27 points of improvement (glitched ticks are responsible for the improvement being an odd number), I believe I can do better.[/hide]

So I've been working on Thrasher solo 1, and I've hit it on 80% with my tapping method, and can't hit it on 90% or 100% :(

I'm starting to get really frustrated lol

EDIT:

Right after I posted this I tried it on full speed and was SO close! ffs

EDIT2:

I hit it on 90%!! I can hit it easily on every other speed besides 90 and 100, but on both of those I can consistently get a 3x and get a 4x like 60% of the time.

The only part troubling me is when it goes:

I'm not really familiar with the online system of the PSN, but I'd guess it's fairly similar to the way Xbox Live works. Try searching some YouTube tutorials on it, and then you'd be set from there. If you're talking about GETTING access to the actually online play, for PSN it's free so you won't worry about having to pay a monthly free. Again, YouTube is your friend again lol.

Back on the topic of the TTFAF intro, I don't know if it's just me but I find elbow strumming to be really inconsistent and unreliable at times. It's incredibly easy to hit the first note of the hammer-on sequence (the red note) with your right hand and then the yellow note with your middle finger and then bring up your strumming arm and then tap the subsequent notes. If you've been elbow strumming all along, then obviously it's going to be best for you, but hey whatever what works right?

On a really random note, I've got technical FC'd around 40-50% of TTFAF soon...I'm working on it like crazy. Oh yeah, and I can do the TTFAF intro + post insanity 1+2 without looking!
