Kane1306
:uhh: WHAT IS GOING ON!!! There a game, i simpathise for the people who lose something after hours or days of hard work, because i mean it ALWAYS happens to me. i agree fully with this article. A simple game could make you forget about life for a little, in a good way. Ex. A friend moves away, and you want to get your mind off of it for awhile. You could read, get on the internet, play a game, etc. Then later when your calmed down you could start thinking of a way to communicate with him/her to check if there doing well. yes, im a noob, but i have lost an item of personary value in this game. More than an item at some points, but if you have, should you waste time by talking to people? Well it really depends on what you think. I feel sorry for the people who lose there items, but to the beggers... :notalk: no talky for you!!! p.s.: settle this conflict plz. Give peace a chance! hi. Unleasher10
unleasher i never said they have no value, i said they have little value. They have value? But I thought you said: ok here we go, THEY ARE ONLY PIXELS! If you agree that they do have velue, then you agree that they have more meaning than just a few pixels. Also, if pixels provide you entertainment which influences your real life, aren't they then also more than pixels? OT though, I think the Times articles should be posted in the debate club forum *looks up* http://www.google.com/trends?q=runescap ... f+warcraftWe win. Haha. estarayella
unleasher, does a penny have any value? yes it does, its just very small. its still only a penny though. do pixels have value? yes, they provide entertainment. they are still only pixels though. they cant save lives, or feed people, or clothe them. they are just pixels. i guess an easy way to explain it is with noted money. a ̢̮â¬Å¡Ãâã50 note. whats it worth? nothing, absolutely nothing. its just a piece of dyed woven cotton. its worthless. but with that pice of cotton, you could buy someone food to stop them starving. with lots of those pieces of cotton, you could set up an entire education system for thousands of children, and house hundreds of homelss people. but its what you can get out of it thats worthwhile, and worth something, not the piece of cotton itself. pixels are the same. they are worthless. they are just little coloured dots on a screen. but you use them to bring yourself entertainment, or happiness. the happiness is worth lots, the entertainment is worth lots.... but the little coloured dots on the screen, they are still worthless. sometimes there are days when i really want to hit you..... this is one of those days

malo2
malo yes i have a job, and im here because i use runescape as a form of entertainment. by toys, i mean anything that provides entertainment, for example, computers, cars, dvd's, games consoles.runescape? so you are here to prove me right and contradict yourself? would you rather have a dchain or a ferrari enzo?, a party hat, or the worlds best games console? full third age or the books that you've been wanting for years?i would also rather have a ferrari than a new pc #-o do the pixels really compare to that?yes honestly, you have no common sense what so ever. ...having expensive items to show off on runescape makes me much happier than toys. Oh I see. People play RS for happiness... well, what would make me much happier than toys and "expensive items to show off on runescape" put together would be a scholarship. SO tell me this: why in the world did you start arguing with me to begin with??? first you start an argument with me, and then you accuse me of returning an argument? really, you are beyond lack of common sense. estarayella
im debating this topic because i feel very strongly about it, im accusing you of claiming i have no comman sense, which i find insulting. insulting someone is not returning and argument as you put it, it is simple being insulting, so again i ask you to please stop. as for your comment about money, obviously i do have the money for runescape, as i play as a member, all that comment shows is that you didnt understand the point i was making. money and pixels are worthless. but the entertainment, or the stuff you get out of it (a car for example), thats wirth something, in my opinion. i couldnt care less about the pixels and the stupid pieces of cotton people put so much value on. what i care about is being happy at the end of it. if having a little group of pixels called a dchain makes you happy, go for it. if you want 100 pieces of dyed cotton, go for it. personally, i prefer to have something that means something, like the feeling of being entertained, or the knowledge that i can go anywhere i want because i own that car. sometimes there are days when i really want to hit you..... this is one of those days

estarayella
malo, how many times do i have to say it? if you want to value a set of pixels called a dchain go for it, i couldnt care less. i dont value it very much(edited to say i dont value it much), that is all i have been saying, and i dont understand why you would, but that is because they are just coloured dots to me, nothing more i play runescape not for the levels, but for the enjoyment i get of being able to do something with my friends who are too far away for me to see on a regular basis. my levels come from playing for almost 2 years, not from level grinding. and i think my degree in lingustics would tell you that i do understand basic concept and language, though of course you may decide that a university degree is worth nothing, my tutors would disagree, and it is their opinion of my lingustical talent that matters sometimes there are days when i really want to hit you..... this is one of those days

By that definition, everything in the universe is useless because it's just made up of quarks and electrons weighing 0.0000000000000000000000000066 grams. Yet, the electrons and quarks are worth more than the sum of their parts, they have a deeper inner value, in the form of people and cars and money and the screens that display the pixels. And that's exactly what Misplacedme is saying in the article, they're worth more than just the pixels, they represent a very real value, however small the value might be. A penny is not just a circular disk of nickel, and a ferrari is not just a big lump of chrome and metal. They can represent value and status. You're not just a blob of water, bones and flesh, you're a person with the ability to help other people and feel emotion. Neither are pixels just pixels, they represent hard work and dedication, and should be valued as such. http://www.google.com/trends?q=runescap ... f+warcraftWe win. Haha. nicrune007
There's only one difference between the effort we put into RS and the effort we put into our jobs - one we do for fun. In fact, logic would suggest we should be more depressed over losing an item in RS than we should in real-life, since we actually wanted to work for that item, rather than being forced to to get through life. kraan
I get tired of people using that quip "they are just pixels" ... I've been working since I was 12, mowing grass in the summer and shoveling snow in the winter ... got my "first" real job at 16 working as a bus-boy ... did a small stint in the military ... worked on the docks loading 16 tons of coal ... the point i'm trying to make is that I know what the value of money is ... I've had to break my back to make it for a LONG time now ... thus my time is very valuable to me ... and everything I do has a value to it the hours of playing RS and the hours of effort that I put into it are worth something to me ... so whether its an abby whip or a bronze dagger ... its all worth something to me, cause I earned it if you still think that they are just pixels, then just find me in the game I'll take your dragon chain and full Guthan from ya ... after all ... they are just pixels
highlanders
True, it's losing time and effort, but time and effort you knew were a waste in the beggining. As opposed to money you make from painting, the money is not a waste, you can use it to buy real things. Virtual money, you can buy more virtual things with it, in a virtual world that does nothing else than waste your time. Real money, you can buy a car to move around your town. you can buy a gift for a friend, you can go at a restaurant with someone, etc, real money has so much more value. 2480+ total

I know it's hard, and I know that most people like to skim through stuff. Oh fine, if you don't want to read it, I'll tell you the meaning... It's very simple: The Unted States has a little more than 302 million people, and there are less than 2 million that regularly play every day. Let's assume that everyone plays RS in the U.S. At least 300 million people in the U.S. find some other form of entertainment besides RS, excluding other countries in the world. If you need me to repeat this or clarify anything, just tell me and I'll be glad to do so. Taking two hours everyday during the summer to try to research and write a scholarship-winning essay for Siemens has much more benifit than two hours a day in RS getting some hat to show off... even if you don't win, you'll still be smarter and wiser than if you spent that time in RS. I swear, tipit is becoming dumber by the day, or maybe it's just me :-s I like RS a lot a long time ago, but I haven't played RS for more than a year now because I don't like video/computer games much any more. By the stand I am taking with RS, one should assume that I do not play RS anymore. However, a very negative and unfriendly person would quickly assume that the writer is a hypocrite, and therefore being a hypocrite, does the opposite of what he or she says he does (in this case, plays RS). I will answer your second question now: I don't assume that anyone on this forum plays RS, but I do assume that they are at least intersted in the game; this way, I can eliminate bias in my responses. I'm only writing to advise poeple not to spend a lot of time in RS. Let us all tone our posts down a little, and not be so aggressive. True, they won't feed your family or put a roof over your head, but they do still have value. What, essentially, makes real life more important than RS? So far I've gathered: 1. Real life achievements can help other people. 2. Real life achievements affect you longer / more. 3. We cannot avoid real life, while RS is optional. My response to those things are: 1. RS achievements can also help others. If I have high mining and smithing, I can make my friend rune full if he's lost his. If I have high combat, I can protect my friend when he's about to die against an Ankou while he's going to get his Stronghold of Security boots. Granted, helping in real life is far more important than in RS, but that just makes the value less, it doesn't diminish it completely, and your argument is that they have no value at all. 2. Again, this makes the value of RS achievements far smaller, but doesn't take away all the value from them. 3. While you can avoid RS, a lot of people don't, as you can see just looking at these forums. Therefore, people still participate in RS, and we can still use our RS achievements to help them. So, to sum it up, RS achievements might have way less importance than RL achievements, but they do still have some value, and therefore they aren't just pixels. http://www.google.com/trends?q=runescap ... f+warcraftWe win.
