Deaf or Blind?

Featured Replies

Definately Deaf. For one thing, I already sign pretty good (about a year until fluent status).

Secondly, it's not a disability, really. Deaf people live perfectly happy lives, and really don't have to worry much about being inconvenienced (it's mostly us hearing who are disconvienced).

So yeah, definately Deaf.

Yes I would want to hear music and all that but more so is that hearing is so much more subtle than seeing. One sees whatever is around them and that is that. With hearing it is so much deeper. I think one can acquire more wisdom from hearing than seeing.

I agree...

Personally, I'd rather be born blind than deaf.

However, my life has since become dependent on visuals. At this point I'd rather be deaf.

Even though I love my music, I'd have to pick being deaf. I just couldn't handle not being able to see, personally.

Id rather be deaf than blind. Cant hearing aid sort out your ears if your deaf?

It's a Cochlear implant, and they literally drill a hole into your skull to install it. It's not worth it, and you only gain 8 channels out of over 157 that hearing people have. And you would still not be able to hear over 95% of sounds.

Better just to learn sign language.

Deaf.

Like everyone has said, I'd rather be able to see the faces of those I love.

I'd have to pay a huge price though. Music is a big thing in my life.

Thanks to Quarra for the awesome sig!

I would definetly choose the deaf-option.

Sports is my all, and I most certainly would want to at least do jogging, and it probably would be quite hard to jog if I couldn't see anything. Also, at the moment, my left ear is half-deaf (my left eye is half-blind too, lol), and i don't listen too music anyways. I can even read from lips already.

wtf

Definitely deaf.

Not seeing... colors... gosh... I don't know, it just seems to me that when I think about who I am, and my consciousness, it's centered around my head because that's where I see out of, it's my vantage point to the world. I think I wouldn't feel fully conscious if I were blind.

Also, the deaf community is really awesome :D However, I haven't seen much organized blind community.

Everybody hug and spread the love :D

The Deaf Community is really awesome :P. I've been spending a lot of time with them over the past year and a half.

You should say if you were born with it or not. I'd rather be deaf if I knew how to talk, but being born deaf makes it really hard to learn language probably. I'd much rather be blind if I was born with it, then I wouldn't know I was even blind :-s

Happy to find I'm not the only one who eats glass.

What's funny is that most children born Deaf are signing at the same level a 3 year can speak when they are only 8 months old.

I forgot to mention that I have seen the above in action. I had a basic conversation with a Deaf toddler with the ability to answer how he was, who his mother is, and he could even spell his name. I was BLOWN away. The kid was barely over a year old.

I'd go crazy only being able to relate to hearing. So I choose deaf. And it would get me some blessed silence.

I don't know. Sorry to be soppy but I could never choose between no music and not seeing my girlfriend smile :/

I'd quite surely be deaf rather than blind. Almost everything I do relates to vision, but deafness wouldn't stop me from doing many things other than learning a new language, since I don't listen to music that often, for example.

This signature is intentionally left blank.

I would say deaf. I can already use sign language very well. I would also be able to learn to get around with not hearing. Blind would be really hard because you rely on sight a lot.
