Deaf or Blind?

Helen Keller was BOTH, blind and deaf. She could only feel, taste, and smell. Yet, she became a lecturer and author, graduating magnum [bleep] laude from a college for the blind. She was the first blind/deaf person ever to graduate from college. Imagine that?

Honestly, I wouldn't want to imagine what it is like being blind or deaf. Given a choice however, I would probably choose to be deaf, since deaf people can relate to sound by feeling vibrations. The blind cannot relate to sight at all.

Life is a joke. Yeah, I don't get it either.

Well.. I don't know. If I was blind, I wouldn't be able to see, and I would have a hard time going to places. However, if I was deaf, my voice would sound totally idiotic like all deafs, so I wouldn't be able to speak without feeling like an idiot. So idk, in my mind it's blind or deaf + mute.

My Dad actually knows a guy that was taught to talk properly and he was deaf. He was born that way and his parents taught him through lips to pronounce it. You know, like "Wow", and he'd say what it'd look like. They'd practice until he got it right. Finally, after a long time, he could talk. It was funny hearing him say "Muggles" when he was talking about Harry Potter.

I would rather be deaf, because I love to read, can;t imagine anything worse than not being able to read.

Though I'm not deaf, I am empathetic with deaf people- therefore I consider the part of the post you made which I have emboldened to be highly offensive.

Deaf for sure. As long as I could still see I can use the computer, watch movies (DVD's have subtitles), and read books (of couse there are grail books but it's easyer to just be able to buy a normal book from the store).

Life would be pretty awful either way, but like most others... i'd go with being deaf. I can always learn to lip read and use subtitles lol

Dunno if it's nasty of me, but has anyone noticed that Virgin media music channels now have people doing the words for each song in sign after midnight? I thought that was kinda weird... how are they supposed to enjoy that?

Most blind cases I think you can still see a little bit. I think hellen keller said that bein deaf was being worse then being blind. I'd rather be blind, especially if I was born with it then it would be better.

Happy to find I'm not the only one who eats glass.

I would be blind. I'm a musician, and I'm planning on basing my entire career around the violin, along with that, my favourite past-time, with no exception, is listening to good music. I simply couldn't live without being able to listen to music, however, although it would be incredibly inconvenient, I could live with being blind.

Cool.

Oh, don't be so bloody sensitive.. Seriously, tell me that you've ever heard a deaf person talk and not sound stupid (aside, perhaps, from someone previously mentioned in this thread). It's not being mean to the hearing impared, it's simply being honest.

Cool.

Also, I believe it depends when you lose your hearing as to how it effects your speach. Actually, I'm fairly certain there's been a study into that exact thing. I'll have a poke around see what I can turn up.

blind

Really? Why? Just asking because you are the only one to say Blind. :D

No, I didn't give an explanation cause I'm not really sure why or I find it hard to put into words.

Yes I would want to hear music and all that but more so is that hearing is so much more subtle than seeing. One sees whatever is around them and that is that. With hearing it is so much deeper. I think one can acquire more wisdom from hearing than seeing.

Do you mean, how old you were when you lost your hearing, or as in, whether or not you were born with it?
both actually.

And to a lesser degree, if it was progressive or just ruptured ear-drums from an accident or something, etc.

It seems that I'm in the minority when it comes to this question. I'd rather be blind. I would hate having to lose my sight and it would probably make going through everyday life much harder but I don't think I could stand losing my hearing. I love music and I love to be able to hear people's voices. I guess eternal darkness just appeals to me more than eternal silence. Also, I can get a guide dog to keep me company and help me through life if I'm blind.

This topic is horrible <.<

Anyway, I think I'd rather be deaf. There's so much beauty in SEEING life and not just hearing it.

I would prefer to wake up to the sight of the morning sun rather than the sound of the birds chirping.

Also I think if I ever saw a person die it might be a little less traumatic than not being able to see what's happening and just hear them gasping for their last breath and then die. :)
