The decline of Runescape, and how it effects Tip.It.

Featured Replies

When I started Runescape 3 or 4 years ago, I was among the "noobs" who used bad grammar and acted a bit like a [bleep]. But even at that time my maturity was and still probably is a lot higher then that of an average scaper right now.

As a year went by I dropped the bad grammar, I made some friends, and I went P2P. I'm still progressing, but I feel I am a mature Runescapian and tip.iter.

Back then all "noobs" were like this, they acted stupid for a while but eventually they learned and out grew there "***hole phase". Now lets go forward 3 years. Now that Runescape is more mainstream(game informer had to review Runescape didn't they? :wall: ) the user base has grown quite extensively.

With this increase of users it seems we not only have the "***hole phase" kids, but the "***holes for life" kids. Or at least "***holes until they join the real world phase". With this increase of the latter players Runescape is in a very decrypt state.

As more and more of these immature players pass Runescape on by word of mouth they bring there other immature friends in, who then in turn bring there friends. So now we are in the "snowball phase", Runescape has passed its prime and older mature players aren't going to join Runescape, when they can play WoW or Guild Wars which has a better community. Or at least since the world is so large you can avoid the miscreants and scum.

So now we have more and more immature players, but the mature players have slowed down to a trickle. For every 20 players, maybe 5 are mature. With this lack of mature players Runescape is in a really defunct state, and is probably past all hope.

So now here comes the fan sites, the mature players know these sites well and pass it on too there not too smart friends or relatives. Who then pass it on too there friends, and once again we enter the "snowball phase".

But these players are not satisfied just reading guides, they have questions that may not be answered by the guides and where else can they be answered? And now we have them joining the forums.

So first they stick only too the runescape forums, clogging them up with some of the threads we see. Mainly being "what if" and "wouldn't this be awesome" threads. I admit, I have some active threads in there that fall under the category and I probably shouldn't have posted them.

Then they move to the other forums, putting in there ideas. Right now every other thread in off topic is about either religion or politics, and never in a good light either. The lovable off topic I once knew is no longer there, now filled with a mad hungry beast trying to cause disarray and anger.

This is only the tip of the iceberg too, within a year and a half these forums will be clogged with trolls, ***hats, morons, and immature idiots. Fan sites have had a good run, Tip.It has been going strong since before '04. But the immaturity of Runescape is bringing it down, and I feel that we are a sinking ship.

I'm not going to jump ship just yet, but its only a matter of time before many of the mature Tip.Iters and other fan sites go down.

Some of this may be exaggerated or under rated, but for the most part I believe this too be true. Talking with one of my Runescape friends in particular, he views it the same way.

I just needed somewhere to put this down, and get it out too the community. I hope it was insightful. And if you think its total trash, well your entitled to your opinion(s).

What annoys me deeply is that most RS-ers don't have any patience anymore. When they ask a question, they need an answer immediately. They start bumping topics, start being annoying etc. Also, the fact that 90% of the new topics made have been made before, the answers are "hidden" in the guides etc. Lazy some people are.

Before 2004 tip.it forums was ScapeBoard. Ofcourse it was better, if the community gets bigger some rules seem to be forgotten. The best example of the decline of RS are the stupid nicknames. I am aware that I don't have the most original name, but I find it childish if people make a pure named "Pure Zezima999" or something. Instead of being respected, the top RS players are haunted. I don't say Zezima & others don't like it now and then, but sometimes they need some "rest" too. Oh well...

Finally, someone who knows where I'm coming from.

I knew there was a forum before Tip.It, but I didn't remember the exact info and if I had posted something wrong my whole post would be discredited because of one mistake. So I went on the facts that I knew.

Thats one of the reasons I quit my old account(s), I don't like names with numbers in them. It shows you have little creativity, and need to add numbers so the name will pass.

Personally I'm shocked Zezima and the old classic 'scapers are still around. I know I came back for the nostalgia and because the core game play of Runescape is good.

well first of all, id like to state this. peter griffin laugh @ your avatar of RVB.

and then, its true so true, the state of RS is decline perhaps the perception over time has been thrown off due to lack of viewing the community a majority of the time, but now that i have time to not play, but bask in the warming glow of the glowing warmth of the community and people who play this game, i have come to understand the days of when a set of rune was unobtainable were the best.

I have been playing this game for a long time, having started about 6 months after the game was launched. In that time I have seen runescape travel through almost all of its evolutions both in terms of game play and comunity.

In addition to this I have been a member of Tip.it for almost as long as I have been playing. Dont let my join date to the side there fool you, I remember scape board, I remember the various wipes we have had here.

What I also remember is that every 6 months some comes on with a post like this talking about how badly the comunnity has degenerated in the past "X" period of time and how much better it was "back in the day".

But the truth is, nothing has changed. There are still the noobs just like there always was, there is still the arogent higher leveled players who no one likes just like there always was and there is still that group of players who is "abusing" that new method of leveling up and woe is all those players who cant take advantage of it or have already put in the time training the old way.

People just need to wake up and smell the rose, the first step to improving the comunity is through yourself. If you dont act mature and educate these "unsavories" then how can they be expected to improve?

But the real key is just ignoring those who you don't want to deal with, its alot like real life really, not every one will act in a way that you think is appropriate and you just have to find your way of dealing with it.

Now that Runescape is more main stream the "noobs" and macroers have increased insanely fast.

You can say that the community hasn't changed at all, but it has. I know I act mature, but me alone acting mature isn't going to change 1 million players.

You need to wake up and smell the roses, and realize that its not the same as it was even a year ago.

I respect your opinion, but I don't agree that RS is declining. Jagex wants good RS community, thats why Report Abuse is there.

Sure there's a lot of immatures and idiots, ignore them is simple solution.

For example, if someone try to trick you into walking to wilderness, look at you going to wilderness. Tell them, "No, I'm not going to wilderness", walk away and go back to whatever you are doing before. If they try to threat you "nooby nooby, you're chicken" or whatever they say. Doesn't matter! It doesn't affect you or Jagex or anybody else so just don't listen to them.

This is starting to look like a rant.

Hacked 10 years old account, permamently quit if Jagex doesn't return items.

I have to admit, that when I first started playing, people seemed to be a lot more openly friendly and helpfull. If there were beggers, they would follow you round in thanks for a couple of gp, and leave if you asked them to.

Nowadays, I offer beggers 100gp, and they decline the trade saying ''I want/need 10k.'' Or they follow you around until you teleport, until they get bored, or until you submit and give them what they want.

It seems that they have become less thankfull, and to be honest, less newby. I always liked newbs because of their innocence and friendliness, but now most seemed to have become greedy and selfish.

The only way i see RS is declining is with the amount of autoers. I find lots of mature people in RS. There will always be immature players. The reason we notice more immature players is because so many more people play since classic

Barrows drops: Torags pl8, Torgas legs, Guthans chainskirt

I agree, and I disagree with you. (The main topic)

Here's why:

I agree to the extent that the actual Runescape community is having an inflation of immature idiots. And I also agree that there are some trickling into the Tip.it community, it is noticeable, but it's not that huge (On the forums) well, except for the actual 'Scape community it is getting a tad out of hand (Mostly on the F2P worlds, no offense to F2P Tip.iters).

But, I disagree, because from what I notice, there are a lot more mature Tip.iters around than the immature ones you are speaking of. I'd say 95%+ of the Tip.it population is quite mature, yes, there are the newbies that make idiotic posts, but then again there's the noobs who constantly keep violating the boards with useless spam.

And to add to the "good ol' days", yes the community was quite good, but then again that was due to it being SMALL.

Small community = tends to be nice, I mean look at real life in villages and small towns, really hospitable.

Large community = tends to be more crime ridden and whatnot, there's more people and more problems.

The Small/Large community analogy fits quite well with the community of Runescape as it is today, the more people, the more crime(idiots, etc) come into play.

And now, how is the report abuse button keeping immature players out? You can't report players for using bad grammar, or saying "pwnd nub".

Nah, look like you don't get my point. Here's a short story.

In Lumbridge basement, there's couple of high-level players standing around at RFD chest. A single low lvl player came down ladder naked (I mean no equipment on), and saying he had been hacked. He been asking "will someone give me free stuff, i got hacked", and been saying that for a while.

No one respond to him, but mostly say "no free stuff, work for it". I added along, "You might want to scan your computer with virus scanner, change your password and recovery question". He just response "I know, free stuff plz". I told him "work on fishing and sell fish, or woodchop and sell willow or something." He still asking for freebies, so it was no use. I don't have time to "trying" to help him; solution - Ignore him.

A few min later, he begin wearing mith armor, and rune scimitar. And then saying random message like "lolol, I'm not hacked, noobs" for no reason and left basement.

Moral? Trust noone and ignore annoy people. If they find themself ignored and noone else to scam (or whatever immature thing to do). They might stop that eventually. I have no idea what are you talking about me ruining the community.

And what are you talking about, grammar is immature? I don't report grammar. I'm talking about rule breakers ARE immature.

Cancer thing looks poor example, just deal with it and live out of it.

Hacked 10 years old account, permamently quit if Jagex doesn't return items.

ventuzz.png

The mentality change is pretty obvious. A few years ago, if you walked into a bank, you would see people asking for a job to make money. People would approach you and ask if they could work for you. These days, you don't (or hardly) see that anymore: they just straight up ask for free money/items.

DutchDreams.png

I think Jagex should in corporate some sort of rewards scheme that rewards the good honest players who ain't idiots.

Or a stronger deterant.

I mean like perhaps reward us with a worthy amount of gp for VALID reports

Increase the results (eg blackmarks) given forabusive language and scamming

Add a feature on the log-in screen or w/ethat names and shames random people who recently received blackmarks.

Gives players a mark (like a skull) who trade scam for a month or so.

Place the worst offenders in a un-escapable cage area for a month or so, where other rsers can all see them.

Setup a reward scheme of gp and/or good items for certain periods of no rule breaking (eg 1 day, 1 week, 1month, 1 year, 2 year and so on) Breaking a rule would set you back down to the low end. Give the ones who have no blackmarks or years of no reports a bronze mod crown or something.

Systems such as these would be powerful in stamping out rule breakers as the consequences aremore sever and hulimating PLUS it gives people a incentive to abide by the rules AND it offers and in-game way for people to see who scams, has black marks etc.

It'd effectively create a group of elites with no rule breaks for new players to idolise and mark out the worst rule breakers so that they are ignored and have a harder time trading etc. Of course all these "punishments" can be worked off over time, so if a player sees the error of their ways they can lose the marks of a scammer etc.

Even if he has that I'd still safely assume he got hacked if he says it - if most other "gotz haxed fre stuf plz" people really got hacked, at least. <.< Let's not count the fact thought that if someone would want to hack a RuneScape account, he'd go for Zezima or some other bigshot.

Of course I don't, but since WoW is an amazingly large game. You could play the whole day without having to interact with a single person. Where as on Runescape to do things you are going to run into people very often.

Once again instead of looking at the bigger picture you are focusing on one or two specific happenings. Autoing, immaturity, scamming, hacking, Gold farmers, ***holes, plus the other denizens are all part of the larger picture.

In these small cases then of course you ignore them, but don't try and say that the community isn't degrading because it is. They have moved from just harassing in game, to the RSOF, and finally they are now moving on to fan sites. Because he didn't get a rise out of you he will try somewhere else, and the best place is a fan site forum.

True they may stop, but they are more likely to move on to something else.(Fan sites) So by ignoring the problem, you pass the baton onto someone else and chances are that the next person is probably not going to be as strong minded as you are. So for that reason I implied that you are ruining the community. But I did not mean to personally attack you. Sorry if it seemed that way.

Why is it a poor example? It describes Runescape fairly accurately. Right now Runescape has contracted "cancer".(or immature gits) Instead of acknowledging that there is a problem you just ignore it. And as the "cancer" grows it will be harder and harder to ignore it, or eventually because of ignorance the host will die.

Alls I am saying is that at the very least acknowledge that there is a problem, and that its growing worse.

I totally agree with that idea, it would even go with Jagex's marketing scheme. There scheme is after all to cater to the parents, and what better way then too have an award system for good behavior.

I can see it now:

"Jimmy do you have a black crown next to your name? No mom. *Mother checks* Yes you do!! Grounded for 2 weeks!"

Many tip.iters are mature, but many of them aren't. Not everyone has too be a m4tty before they are considered immature.

Follow the doughnut to my blog! :D

I do ignore them, but ignoring a problem doesn't mean that the problem doesn't exist. If I were too deny that I didn't have say, cancer. I can deny all I want, but that doesn't change the fact that I still have cancer.

Your methods are by far the simplest method, but they do not help the community at all. In fact you are worsening the community by not telling them that they are immature.

Stop looking at the small picture, scamming and hacking is only a small part of this problem.

I am not ranting about the community, I am pointing out that it is going down hill.

And now, how is the report abuse button keeping immature players out? You can't report players for using bad grammar, or saying "pwnd nub".

What a terrible analogy. You can't compare idiots in Runescape to cancer. The point Ventuzz made is that you can simply ignore it and it doesnt effect you. You can't ignore cancer, it has a much greater effect on your life than some guy calling you a noob, and frankly you can ignore idiots, and it won't effect your gameplay whatsoever, I'm so sick of people ranting about "Runescape is going downhill" and all that rubbish, it's not hard to ignore people in the game, you even get a special feature for it.
