Ok if I'm going into middel school, What caculater DO I need

Featured Replies

our whole high school uses TI-83's, they rock. I dunno about middle school, i never used a calculator then

I used one from 8th through 12th grade and I loved it, worked out perfectly. Its still in good condition, and I never needed anything more advanced, although as time goes on you *may* need something more advanced.

I know this thread is really sad but my school only "recamends the ti 30xa. And thats crap

I"m using the casio fx115 es If you can recamend a better 1 (sataying sintific not graphing) please tell me.

Just use the calculator they recommend. You're looking for advice, and your school, the best source around, gave it to you on a platter.

I personally used that exact same calculator your school recommended and it worked like a charm throughout my middle school math courses (algebra 1 and geometry). We had a set of TI-83s in the classroom if we needed to graph something and that's it. It's not necessary to have a super-powerful calculator in middle school. You can go on about how good your Casio calculator is, but to be honest, I don't think you know enough math to do most of the things you just mentioned it can do. Ended up buying a TI-84 for my Algebra 2/Trig class in my freshman year of highschool, and I plan on buying an 89 for my BC calc class net year.

Also, the TI calculators are the standard in the US I believe - standardized tests mention which model of the TI you can use for that specific test. Haven't heard them mention any other model before.

Let's leave the advice asking on a single thread when you get to highschool, ok? :-P.

the ti-30 is a good calculator, we used it in 5th grade. My recommendation would be the Ti-84 se:

It is a graphing calculator, however it works great for non graphing functions as well. I got mine in 6th grade and started using the graphing functions in early 7th grade. Its a great calculator, and it even has games on it for when you are bored.

TI-89 I'm pretty sure that's what it's called.

EDIT:

a calculator pulled out of my backpack was enough to score a whole math semester... :|

you should use basic ones for your early years and the scientific ones for your late years.

You will get all da ladies if you use this one :D

Happy to find I'm not the only one who eats glass.

TI-89, we used them in Math Class, they are amazing.

But any old calculator will do, as long as it has the "pi" symbol on it. You'll be doing a lot of stuff with triangles, you'll need it.

I'm not in a rush anymore.

Well the casio fx 115 es is sposofley the best advanced sinatfic caculater on the market (379 funcuation) vectors matrises, even non graphing caculus and triganomtrey (sin cos tangerent)

I'm wondering if you can find a better ADvanced sintific caculater not exceding 20 dollers.

(YES BAD SPELLING NO FLAMING ME I DONT F*** CARE ABOUT IT OK????)

And the ti34II

LOL!!!!!!!!!

THats only good for fractions.

This is gifted and talented? seriously? I've just come back from the pub and I can type coherently, come on.

as for a calculator, get one of these babbers

Old school, and can be used to whack your classmates one.

The most advance function you might learn in middle school is square rooting (maybe squaring at the most). Just get a normal scientific calculator, and if you keep it in good condition, you can keep it for high school.

What middle school did you go to, lol? Mine made us do sin, tan, etc.

Just go to staples , and go to the ones that are $20.00. Close your eyes, grab one, and check out.

You're acting as if you're buying a car here. Just buy a random 20 dollar one at staples or a similar store. You don't need advanced functions because unless every kid in the class has an advanced calculator (half won't even bother getting one), the teacher won't use those functions in instruction. Probably all you'll need are the basic +,-,/,x buttons.

I'd recommend not getting a graphing calculator, in middle school it'll probably get stolen and you won't need it anyway. Ti-83 is good, but just about all middle school math can be done without needing a graphing capability.

Once in high school, Ti-83 will have everything you need for there and even most college math classes. Ti-89 isn't accepted in a lot of universities but if you cannot pass a class without an Ti-89, then you should change your major to something non-math related.

I'd say the Ti-89 is good for when you use it for a job, and don't need to show the work.

Lol all this over a calculator #-o . At my school we had a normal scientific calculator(which cost about a fiver) and if we were doing stuff where we needed graphics calculator the school lent us them. Idk obviously its different in america :|

i heard u should bring this calculator to school everyday.

I'd love to see your temporal lobe replace a calculator.

i know u think ur smart with ur comment, but hey the calculator i showed is the most important one. plus too many kids are going to become too dependent on those ti-89s and ti-92s tis why they banned them at Arizona State University

I prefer really old school. Abacus all the way.

In all reality, the best calculator for you is, get this...it may be a shock....the one they suggest. If you wanna go high end, then just go all the way. TI-92's are one of the best calculators on the market. They only cost about $30-40 w/ shipping on eBay simply cause they are old. The only problem with them is that they are not allowed on pretty much any test (SAT, ACT and the like).

Trust me, you don't need a sophisticated calculater for middle school. You don't need a grahphing calculator, I got one for Algebra 2 in High school. A regular scientific calculater will do.

smallsigr.jpg

I just used a simple $5 calculator in middle school (rarely used it anyway).

Although I did have to use a TI-(80 something) calculator for 8th grade when I started Algebra I.

Also you should get a TI-84 Silver Edition calculator when you get into high school. (You should actually get one as soon as you start Algebra. Otherwise the graphing problems will be harder than they should be.) This is what my high school uses for Algebra I & II. I'm going into Geometry, so I wouldn't know what to use for that class though. ::thumbs down::

And it appears that you are very worried about middle school. It's not hard at all. Just don't be lazy and keep your grades up and do your homework on time. I know the grades won't go onto your transcript yet, but it's a good habit if you start now rather than barely passing until high school. If you screw up during high school, you're likely to mess up the rest of your life. No pressure.

ever see that program with the Chinese kids who learned how to use an abacus from about 4? And could beat adults with calculators? I'll rummage for a link.

you dont need 1

I love how people are saying "You don't need one."

In 6th grade, we had to do square roots. Okay, tell me the square root of 87 without a calculator. (Rounded to the nearest hundredth, of course)

And that's just 6th grade, it gets harder in 7th and 8th.

Anyways, I'd use the one that your school recommends. Even if you don't like it. There's a reason it's recommended.

I haven't had to find the square root of an odd or prime number and I'm in High School, and I've been in Honors classes.

A ti34II has more then what you'll need up until 9th grade. Unless you are really lazy.

well today at 11:30 am 14 years ago i was born.. wo0t!!!
At 11:30 you should start holding your head underwater wo0t!!!
Stop acting such a moron.

Any scientific calculator is fine... You won't need a graphing calculator, and they can hardly expect to make you buy one for middle school.

I didn't even use a graphing calculator until grade 9, and they provided Ti-83's for us.

Agreed. My middle school math? Haha,

giantcalculatorkx5.jpg

That thing could've got me through it (a much smaller version at least).

But hey, guess it depends on your curriculum, ours back then was very easy. Now if you take algebra in 8th like I did, then you may want to get a graphing calculator. I don't have any suggestions personally, they supplied us with TI-89's.

And you seem a little nervous about middle school... I don't blame ya, but try to ease up a little. You'll be fine :)

In 9th grade we had to find the square roots of negative numbers. That is dealing with imaginary numbers though. But then again I took Algebra II in the 9th and I'm going to take Geometry in 10th. Then Trig./Calculus in 11th/12th.
