Do we REALLY exist?

I used to wonder about this when I was very little.

Even if reality is just created by our minds, how does that make this not real? After all, the world in my dreams are "real." I have all five senses in my dreams. The people in my dreams look real. They feel real. But then again, they are the creation of my mind. That doesn't make them fake to me.

Let's say that I went into a comatose state and my mind could only dream. Let's say that it created a Second Life. I may never know that I'm in a hospital bed and suffering from a coma.

In my world, I wake up one morning. My room is different. It is elaborately decorated and very beautiful. The warm rays of the sun are shining through a large glass window near my bed. I get dressed, wash my hair, and do the rest of my morning routine and then walk outside. The sky is a beautiful shade of blue and there is not a single cloud. The sun's rays are relaxing my skin. I look at myself and notice that my body is beautiful and perfect.

This is an interesting question. How do we know for sure that we aren't really in a hospital bed somewhere and we are suffering from comatose? How do we know that we won't wake up one day in a hospital bed and be surrounded by warm, friendly faces and the people say to us "Welcome home. It's been 20 years."?

But I guess it doesn't matter. Even if we were in a permanent comatose state and this was all an elaborate dream, it wouldn't matter. We would never wake up from it anyway. We might as well stop worrying about it and live this life the best we can and see what happens after death.

Maybe all our life is in fact a comatose sleep in another place. Like in our dreams, we think it's real. Then when we die, we wake up in another place, surrounded by friendly faces. :) Ha that would be heaven.

Seriously, can we stop this wave of pretentious that's swooping through tip.it lately, like a plague? All these 'deep thought' threads are not big, certainly not clever, and, on a personal level, are unfortunately not funny to read/or make fun at anymore.

Descartes didn't realistically doubt he existed. He went over this particular dicourse in his book Meditations. His aim was to find what parts of his knowledge were truth and which were not, and this was part of his method of doubt.

Ulitmatley and objectively his method of doubt failed because of this question (although he himself thought he succeeded). In my eyes he only acomplished the phrase "cogito ergo sum" but that phrase came in his later book Discourse On The Method. The orginal phrase is simply "I am, I exist".

With so many trees in the city you could see the spring coming each day until a night of warm wind would bring it suddenly in one morning. Sometimes the heavy cold rains would beat it back so that it would seem that it would never come and that you were losing a season out of your life. But you knew that there would always be the spring as you knew the river would flow again after it was frozen. When the cold rains kept on and killed the spring, it was as though a young person had died for no reason. In those days though the spring always came finally but it was frightening that it had nearly failed.

Erm no, there isn't a "wave of pretentious" and I was calling it the opposite. It's a place where you can avoid these questions by looking at pictures of cats with captions under their names. Seriously though why do you even care. I personally dont find the thread about which way to cut your sandwhich interesting or as said that cat thing. Different people like different things, accept it don't try and ridicule them for posting what they like and others for discussing it.

What would have happened if einstein had told to himself; "Oh my, the concepts I'm working on are certainly pretentious, insignificant, and not funny, I should stop and become a farmer."?

I kinda like these threads to in a way.

You can't come to these threads just stating they suck. Instead you'll have to make your own threads. I remember the singing contest for example. I'd really appreciate threads with more heart and less head.

I was going to make a similar topic with a different approach later today. My spin on it was that I read an article saying that within the next 50-100 years, we should have the technology to build simulators advanced enough that the creatures/people in it fully believe they exist. If we'll have that kind of technology and millions of people have their own simulations running where the people in it are convinced they exist, whose to say we're not one of millions of simulations already running?

Maybe we're already in the matrix. The "alien abductions" are when the aliens who control the matrix take out a human from the matrix and do a "health check". Maybe earth is a computer program on which they try out their techniques to control us, in order to eventually make us their new slaves. It's possible, we can't know. :)

Einstein wouldn't be using a forum spawned off an online game for 13 year olds to project his theories. Man, I love comparisons like this! :XD:

Using that same analogy, if you assume you think based on the argument that you think: "I think, therefore I am; James doesn't exist, therefore James doesn't think", you could say that anyone that comes up with a new idea exists, as they'd have to think in a different way than yours. Otherwise, if we were products of your imagination, for example, we, and our thoughts would be limited by your capacities.

Ofcourse we are real.

The only thing I've been wondering lately is this:

How can we take up space, the one moment we sit on a chair and we take in that space the other moment we go to the toilet and take in that space. What was there before us? Air? Where does it go to, all up to the skies (as in the same method as Archimedes)?

It's just weird, probably silly to that I ask.

Going strictly by Descartes, yes, we do exist and this is a silly question.

Descartes only ever proved that he existed to himself. Like i can only prove I exist.

He never proved we all exist.

We can't really prove that we exist, but solipism is a completely unsatisfactory and unfullfilling world view which can lead to nihilism and depression.

If everything is a construct of your (my) mind, then so are the plays of Shakespeare, the mathematics of Russell and the symphonies of Beethoven. Which is unlikely, I think it over-eggs the power of the brain.

Anyway, you can't refute it, but that doesn't mean it's satisfactory. Philosophically it's a fairly sterile viewpoint. I don't think that means it's not worth discussing though, people like the Matrix and that deals with a similar kind of outlook, except with more leather.
