Italian tenor Luciano Pavarotti dies

Featured Replies

(AAP) - Italian opera star Luciano Pavarotti, hailed by many as the greatest tenor of his generation, died in the early hours of Thursday, his manager Terri Robson said.

"Luciano Pavarotti died one hour ago," Robson said in a telephone text message to Reuters. He was 71.

The rotund, black-bearded tenor known as "Big Luciano" helped bring opera to the masses and performed to vast stadium audiences round the world.

He shot to fame with a stand-in appearance at London's Covent Garden in 1963 and had soon had critics gushing about his voluminous voice.

In July 2006, Pavarotti underwent surgery in New York for pancreatic cancer and retreated to his villa in Modena. He had to cancel his first planned public reappearance a few months later.

He led a good life, I went and saw him when he came to NZ, sad to see him go. :(

Sad to see him go  all though he was apparently very greedy

You can tell that by just looking at him

Sad to see him go  all though he was apparently very greedy

That actually helped him. His figure actually helped him be the singer he was. They say he had the perfect physique for an opera singer.

I don't think opera music would be as recognised as it is today without his presence. The opera world has lost a legend by the sounds of things.

I really don't think he meant that kind of greedy.

Still, sad to see a legend in any field pass away.

I never really cared for stuff he's done. But of course it's sad when somebody dies. He used to pop up every once in a while during my youth. My grandma liked him as well, but she's also dead. :P

When the stars make you drool just like a pasta fazool, that's amore!

I have yet to see anyone cane Nessun Dorma like he did. Really is a shame.

The man truly had one of the greastest voices of all time, one which will be played for centuries to come. He also did a lot of great charity and awareness work, as a result of his success. A glutton, he may have been, but he certainly gave back more than most.

Ciao Lucio.

I shall have a cornetto tonight in celebration of his life.

I shall do as the great man himself would and have 3 :P

I have never really listened to any of his songs other than Nessun Dorma but that is truly brilliant. The end gives me goosepimples without fail everytime I hear it.

We had it playing in the common room at my 6th form today...was a change :D

With so many trees in the city you could see the spring coming each day until a night of warm wind would bring it suddenly in one morning. Sometimes the heavy cold rains would beat it back so that it would seem that it would never come and that you were losing a season out of your life. But you knew that there would always be the spring as you knew the river would flow again after it was frozen. When the cold rains kept on and killed the spring, it was as though a young person had died for no reason. In those days though the spring always came finally but it was frightening that it had nearly failed.

They played it on the radio this morning in honour of him, amazing stuff. Sad to see such a legend go.

My mum quite liked him. All I know for him for is his Nessum Dorma, which is perfect. RIP.
