Brandon_7
Let me get this straight: both you and your mother broke the law and an offcier (whose job it is to enforce the law, mind you) punished you for it. And somehow, you're complaining about it as if he's the one that was wrong? Brilliant.
kelem_ryu
What's more important? Getting along or the law?
pfilc23
Well, cops do have a certain leeway (actually a lot of leeway) in choosing whether or not to cite someone when they have broken the law. Most minor offenses are handled with a warning. When they are not, it is often because the person was confrontational or had prior incidents. However, that's not always the case, I have been involved in situations where the cop refused to allow any leniency for no apparent reason. For example, a friend was written a ticket for going 5 mph under the speed limit. All said, police can almost always find a reason to cite you, you have to do your best not give them any glaring reason to. In this particular situation, it's hard to say, as I wasn't there to witness it. Maybe you and your mom were confrontational with the officer and that's why he cited you. Maybe this particular cop writes up everyone for everything or maybe as you say he was just having a bad day. BTW - You have curfew? Why? Is this a CA thing? or Bakersfield? What time is curfew? just curious (never had one when I was growing up)
yomom1919
I think all of the posters in this thread are jumping to conclusions based on the areas in which you live. For instance, I live in New Jersey. In my area, there happens to be a very big police problem that the public is well aware of. The cops are downright nasty, violent, and don't even obey their own traffic laws [the area is not a big crime/violence area]. It's not just word on the street or anything, the mayor talked to them about it etc., but nothings changed. Its quite a problem So everyone saying "blah blah police are jesus" should really consider what areas you're talking about. The police attitude in one state or even city can vary greatly. I'm not jumping to conclusions about police or making generalizations that all police are nasty, but I don't think you people should generalize them in the opposite way. mrmyk
As others have said, you don't really seem to notice all the good work the police do. Sure, he is having a bad day once every few months but what about all the other days? The police deserve much more respect than they get right now so don't bad mouth them. Stoop111
The police have always been nice to me and my family. A cop in the town over pulled us over for not having the required front license plate. He walked up to the car acting all serious then told us we had a nice car and we should have a nice day. Scared us enough to put the plate on. We had a head light out once and we just got a warning. My dad was going over the speed limit (kinda zoned out for a second) and got pulled over, admitted to the cop he was speeding and we got off with a warning. Isn't it lovely how having an opinion makes you hated around here?
Giordano
Both yay and nay. Cops are like people, some of them are good, others are bad. You can't judge them as a whole. However, I do know a good number of them are pansies (or at least their leaders who bark out commands) because when they're getting a criminal from a car case or robbery or something they have way too many cops there doing nothing. They also like to over-kill the fighting to, ten guys on one guy for ten minutes and the guy didn't even do such a bad crime. And a good number of them are racists, white criminals get treated better than latinos and black in the field. knives669
Well, technically you were breaking the law. Even though three minutes isn't a huge deal. I know that you were on your way home and everything, and I don't think he should have cuffed you, but he was doing his job. As for the fine on your mom, I'm not sure what it is you were talking about that she got fined for. So, I'm not going to really form an opinion on it. Cops are people too, and everyone has bad days and makes mistakes. But look on the bright side: At least he didn't taze you. And BTW, I didn't know that policemen had quotas? :?:

Yes, I believe certain liberties must be sacrificed to maintain order and possibly peace. I emphasize certain, however, because my opinion varies on what the 'price' is. doogsidoof
he was on his way home, i give him that the cop should have given his mom a fix it ticket instead of a fine And, contrary to popular belief, cops do not have quotas they have to fill each night. I think this was going over the edge for the cop, and yes, it is bad for cops to bring there personal lives into their work, but that also applys to all people. You wouldnt want a firefighter to not show up to your house because his girlfriend broke up with him and he "doesnt feel like it", would you? Lateralus
I have quite good faith in the police force, at least in my (former) area. I've never been arrested for smoking a joint, because the police don't see it as a huge threat. Whenever I, or anyone else I know, has been arrested has always been for a good reason. I can agree with you on the police force in my area. They're lenient, but strict when they have to be. I've never met a cop here I didn't like, who wasn't as nice and polite as possible. The police really do have a tough, stressful job to do. I don't think I could do it to be honest. :P
deloriagod
That's sucks you got caught. I've broken curfew quite a few times but I never got caught. I rolled up the windows (dark tinted), turned down my music, and drove like I was 80 until I got home (or where ever I was headed). LOL There are a few nice cops in my area but most of them are [wagon] holes. They nail high school kids for doing 2 or 3 mph over the speed limit. Hell, I don't care if they get the guys doing 80 in the 25 zone but leave those poeple who are driving better than that 80 year old in the wrong lane alone (Seriously, I saw an old guy driving down the wrong lane yesterday). I have to say the nicest cops I know are my neighbors. Almost every firework is illegal here in Iowa but they let us fire off whatever we want and even join in. When I had my car accident the cops questioning me in the ER decided to play good cop/bad cop. Trust me, that's not fun and I almost at the point I was going to refuse to talk anymore without a lawyer present. I told them I didn't have time to check the spedometer before I crashed, and he kept going on about how fast I was going (he estimated the speed between 45 and 50 but kept asking me how fast I was going), how I was a complete hazard to other drivers, and how I should never be allowed to drive again. Yeah, some of them can be TOTAL [bleep]s around here.. And I think it's mostly thanks to that cop that I lost my license until January.. And intermediate drivers license doesn't permit you to drive between 12:30 AM and 5:30 AM without special permission. Also, our walking curfew is something like 11:30 around here. There's a lot of vandalism and such so I guess it's ok that we have that in place. It's almost homecoming week so the cops are problably going to be all over the place.. *prays they lay off Friday night* Internet Marketing For Newbies

jackalope14
I see cops as a good thing. I hear all these terrible stories about them, but somehow I have a feeling I dont always get the whole story. (*caugh* this thread *caugh*) :-k Btw do cops actually have "quotas". I hear a lot of people complaining because "cops are only trying to meet their quotas" but I have never actually seen anything that says they do. I would be thankful to anyone who would clear that up for me. P.S....Robocop.
