Runescape Skill Suggestion - Archaeology

skillintrorevampedmd8.png

IMPORTANT! PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING BEFORE YOU START:

This is an extremely long, but well thought out suggestion for an Archaeology Skill. I have, to the best of my ability, made sure not to suggest anything overpowered or unrealistic. My goal is to show people the potential this skill could possess if done correctly. I can only hope, that as you read through this, you will find yourself wanting the skill to be real, as I have for a while now.

Also, please, do not post on this thread unless you have thoroughly read through ALL of the post. It is long, yes, but I want intelligent posts with comments, compliments and construction criticism.

Please no flaming. No rude behavior. No foul language. Follow ALL of Tip It's Forum rules, and then some.

Thank you. I hope you enjoy your read.

About the Skill: Archaeology is a money making skill geared towards the discovery of treasures and artifacts from within the depths of the earth. Using excavation tools, you are able to dig up rock samples, in which may contain items of great value. While excavating you may also find rare fossils, which can be given to the Varrock Museum for decent prayer experience. Also, as you progress in the skill, you will be able to dig up entrance ways into ancient caverns filled with goodies specific to other skills, such as a new powerful type of fish, access to more rune rocks, the ability to cut your own logs into planks and spooky new hunter creatures. The skill is versatile in the sense that it involves almost every other skill within it. Also, Archaeology is tied closely into Mining. With a higher mining level, more of the Archaeology skill will be accessible to you, and you will find that you will receive better quality of rock samples while excavating.

How to Begin: To begin the Archaeology skill, you must talk with the Master Archaeologist who is found at the south end of the Varrock Digsite, South East of Varrock. He will give you a Beginner's Excavation Kit, which includes a Rusty Trowel, Straw Brush and a Chisel. These will be the basic items you need to begin excavating, but more will be needed later on, and as you level you will be able to use more advanced versions of the Trowel and Brush.

Where to Start Excavating: At level 1 Archaeology, you won't be able to make use of anything except for the two main digsites, so to start your training, you can choose either the Varrock Digsite (slightly north of the Master Archaeologist) or the Jungle Digsite just South East of Castle Wars.

[hide=Excavation Tools - Trowels, Brushes and How to Make Them]Excavation Tools

At higher Archaeology levels, you will be able to use stronger, more efficient equipment. These will enable you to dig up and clean rock samples and fossils you normally wouldn't be able to, and also are required in order to open up entrance ways into dungeons.

Making Excavation Tools

Most Archaeology tools, minus the Ancient counterparts, can only be brought into the game by players with the appropriate levels to make them. Trowels require Smithing, while Brushes require Crafting. Each tool requires two items to make. For each trowel or brush you make, you will receive a certain amount of the appropriate exp.

Making Trowels (Smithing)

Trowels require two items to make: A bar of a certain metal (depending on which tool it is) and a secondary item (often obtained through mining). You will need to use the bar on an anvil to craft the "Trowel Head," and then use the head on an anvil while the secondary item is in your inventory. Below is a list of each item, what is required in order to make, and how much Smithing exp you will receive for making it. Please note, the Smithing experience does not include the experience you get for smelting ore into a bar.

Bone Trowel - 1 Bronze Bar, 1 Regular Bone - 26 Smithing exp (12.5 for Bar to Head, 13.5 for Attachment)

Kebbit Trowel - 1 Iron Bar, 1 Kebbit [bleep]e - 52 Smithing exp (25 for Bar to Head, 27 for Attachment)

Sandstone Trowel - 1 Steel Bar, 1 Sandstone Block - 78 Smithing exp (37.5 for Bar to Head, 40.5 for Attachment)

Limestone Trowel - 1 Mithril Bar, 1 Limestone Block - 104 Smithing exp (50 for Bar to Head, 54 for Attachment)

Granite Trowel - 1 Adamant Bar, 1 Granite Block - 130 Smithing exp (62.5 for Bar to Head, 67.5 for Attachment)

Making Brushes (Crafting)

Brushes, like trowels, require two items to make: A log of certain tree (depending on which tool it is) and a secondary item (often obtained as a semi-common drop from a monster). To make a brush, you will to use a Knife on the log while a chisel is in your inventory to craft the "Brush Handle," and then use the handle on the secondary item. Below is a list of each item, what is required in order to make it, and how much Crafting exp you will receive for making it.

Unicorn Brush - 1 Willow Log, 1 Clump of Unicorn Hair - 50 Crafting exp (20 for Log to Handle, 30 for Attachment)

Jogre Brush - 1 Yew Log, 1 Clump of Jogre Hair - 100 Crafting exp (40 for Log to Handle, 60 for Attachment)

Elven Brush - 1 Magic Log, 1 Clump of Elf Hair - 200 Crafting exp, (80 for Log to Handle, 120 for Attachment)[/hide]

[hide=Digsite Archaeology - Basic Excavation]Digsite Archaeology

excavateboxor0.png

The most basic of excavation takes place at digsites. There are two main digsites found in Runescape. The first is the Varrock Digsite, located just South East of Varrock. The second is the Jungle Digsite, located just South West of Castle Wars. Both digsites offer the same options for training, but loot can vary slightly between the two. Each digsite has approximately 50 fissures that respawn shortly after you excavate from them. Excavation works much like mining. You click the option to "Excavate Fissure" and your character will begin to dig away at the crack in the ground until a rock sample is obtained. If more than one person is digging a fissure at the same time, only one of them will get the rock sample. Usually, this is the person with the higher Archaeology level. The higher your level in the skill, and the better your trowel, the faster you will be able to dig up a rock sample.

Once you have dug up a rock sample, you will need to chisel and clean away the dirt from the sample to obtain whatever item is inside. To do this, just simply use your brush on the rock sample while holding a chisel in your inventory. Items found in rock samples at digsites are typically worth less than those found at Special Excavation Spots, or SES's, which are scattered about the map, and are covered later on in this guide.

Fossils - Main Digsites

fossilsqq5.png

Also, during excavation, you might occasionally dig up Low, Medium, High or Rare Fossils. These will not appear as "Rock Samples," but rather as "Dirty Fossil (L/M/H/R)." The letter in the parenthesis simply tells you whether your fossil is Low Leveled, Medium Leveled, High Leveled, or Rare. You will need to clean off the fossil as you would normally clean a rock sample, and once cleaned, the fossil can be given to the Curator of the Varrock Museum for a decent sum of Prayer Exp. Please note, however, these fossils are not buryable, nor can they be used on Home Altars or the Ectofuntus.

Below is a list of the levels needed to dig up fossils, and how much exp each fossil gives.

[hide=Special Excavation Spots (SES) - The Money Makers]Special Excavation Spots (SES)

Scattered around the map are spots where you are able to excavate fissures for greater treasure than you can find at the main digsites. These are called Special Excavation Spots. While these spots contain better loot, they are in much smaller numbers, and it can be difficult to excavate them if there are multiple people attempting to at the same time. Also, typically, these spots are located in dangerous places, or places where you need certain higher levels to access. Below is a list of all the Special Excavation Spots, the levels needed to access them, how many respawns are at the spot, how long it takes for a fissure to respawn and all the potential loot you can obtain from digging there.

Also, in these spots, you are able to get all sizes of rock samples, as long as you meet the base level requirement. Keep in mind, however, that if you only have the base level needed when digging in a SES, you will most commonly get Small Rock Samples. To get the larger samples more commonly, you will need a higher Archaeology level. Furthermore, you will be able to clean all sizes of rock samples found from an SES as long as you meet the minimum required level to excavate from that SES. However, the lower your Archaeology level, the higher the chance you have to accidentally break the rock sample during the cleaning process, recieving no loot as a result. It is often suggested to hold onto your larger SES rock samples until a higher level to reduce the chances of destroying them. Should you choose to do this, do not worry about rock samples mixing in your bank. All rock samples have a level in parenthesis next to their name to identify which SES they originated from. For example, a large sample obtained from Al Kharid would be called "Large Rock Sample (Level 23)."

And one final thing to take into consideration is that all rock samples, no matter the size, obtained from Special Excavation Spots, are worth a set amount of exp. For example, Small through Giant Rock Samples excavated from the Varrock Digsite Ancient Cavern are all worth 200 exp, while all rock samples excavated from the Al Kharid Mine are worth only 10 exp. This applies to the cleaning of rock samples as well.

[hide=Ancient Caverns - Slayer Beasts, Plank-Making, New Fish and More]Ancient Caverns -

Another way to put your Archaeology level to use is to locate and excavate entrances into Ancient Dungeons which were previously inaccessible. Doing this requires three tools: A pickaxe, trowel and chisel. As with excavation of rock samples, the higher leveled tools you use, the faster and more efficiently you will be able to make your way into these caverns. While entrance into these areas requires a certain Archaeology level, you will not earn any exp when you excavate an entrance, and you will need to reopen the entrance every time you wish to return after you have left.

Coincidentally, each of these caverns appear to hold secrets that are skill specific. As you read through the list of possible places to adventure into, you will notice a certain convenience each one gives to a certain skill. Therefore, most of the caverns not only require a specific Archaeology level, but a secondary level requirement as well.

gwdseszy6.png

God Wars Altar Room - Located in the center of the God Wars Dungeon main room.

Level Required to Enter - 96 archlogosmallnq8.png

Levels Needed to Use to Fullest Potential - 90 Prayer, 60 Strength or Agility (To enter the God Wars Dungeon)

Cavern Specifics - Only the most intelligent of Archaeologists know of its existence. Deep underneath the main room of the God Wars Dungeon lies a secret that the Gods wanted to keep from the eyes and hands of the common mortal. However, if you are skilled enough to possess the incredibly high level of 96 Archaeology, you will be able to navigate your way into the God Wars Altar Room. This room, ironically is completely serene and peaceful, despite the constant bloodsport just a few dozen feet above it. It is the most holy church in all of Runescape, and the Altar at the end of the magnificent royal blue carpet proves it. The altar accepts bone offerings, just as a home altar does, but nothing is required to use it other than the levels you need to enter the room and the bones you wish to offer. Being the most pious of all altars, the God Wars Altar will grant 10 times the prayer experience for every bone used on it. For example, Dragon Bones would grant you 760 Prayer Experience, and Ancient Bones a whopping 2,000 Prayer experience. This of course, works with all bones, including ogre bones, wyvern bones and dagannoth bones. Another very noteworthy aspect of this altar is that it gives you the "Worship X" option. So now you don't need to click and use each bone on the altar, saving much time and pain! Also, as an added bonus, when restoring your prayer points at this altar, they will go 16 Points above their max. So, for example, if you have 99 Prayer and pray at this altar, you will have 115/99 Prayer Points. Please note, also, that if you enter the altar room with KC from the dungeon that KC will be lost.

factorycavepn4.png

Abandoned Construction Factory - Located in a cavern underneath Port Khazard.

Level Required to Enter - 92 archlogosmallnq8.png

Levels Needed to Use to Fullest Potential - 85 Construction, 95 Firemaking

Cavern Specifics - No one knows who built the factory, or when it was built, but high leveled Firemakers and Constructors will find this to be their paradise. This factory comes with a machine that enables you to cut logs into planks without having to pay gp to do so. The only problem is that the machine uses magical power to get going, so the only kind of log that will ignite its engine are Magic Logs. Luckily, for 5 Magic Logs, the machine will stay powered for either 5 Minutes or 2 Loads of Logs, whichever comes first. (2 Loads of logs meaning 2 times you use the machine.) One use of the machine will turn all unnoted logs currently in your inventory into planks. A single load of planks takes the machine approximately 1 minute to cut, so also keep that in mind. You will also receive 2,000 firemaking experience per 5 Magic Logs burned, but no construction experience for cutting the logs into planks.

grimycavehs1.png

Grimy Swamp Cavern - Located underneath the lighthouse north of the Barbarian Outpost.

Level Required to Enter - 84 archlogosmallnq8.png

Levels Needed to Use to Fullest Potential - 85 Farming, 90 Firemaking

Cavern Specifics - This slimey cavern has a mystical power within it that has held the secret to Farming and Herblore for centuries. Scattered about the dungeon are little plots filled with everlasting herb seeds, already soiled, planted and watered. However, due to the extreme lack of sunlight, the seeds will not grow. Do not worry, however. You will be able to make the herbs grow with the help of a Sunlight Lantern, which can be made via smithing, or bought from another player. The Lantern requires level 90 to light, however, and the herbs still will not grow if you do not have the correct farming level to grow them. However, if you possess the lantern and all correct levels to grow the herbs, they will only take 15 minutes to fully sprout, and each plot will earn you 4 of each of the herbs you grew. You should also note that though there is 1 plot for every single type of herb (Guam-Torstol), the mystical powers within the dungeon only permit you to grow 5 plots at a time. Also, these plots are player specific, meaning you and other players can grow herbs in the same plot at the same time.

desertrunecavetj3.png

Ancient Desert Grotto - Located northeast of the Agility Pyramid in the desert, just underneath the mining area.

Level Required to Enter - 77 archlogosmallnq8.png

Levels Needed to Use to Fullest Potential - 85 Mining

Cavern Specifics - This Grotto is a Rune Miner's dream. It holds two Runite rocks. Even better, however, is its supply of coal rocks. There are 16 Coal rocks scattered around the Runite rocks. A smart miner would bring a fire staff and nature runes down into the cavern with him, and mine and superheat rune bars until he can't hold anymore. Other than these rocks, though, this cavern has nothing else to offer.

icepathcaveji7.png

Ice Path Cavern - Located at the top of the ice path where you freed the Ice Troll Parents during Desert Treasure.

Level Required to Enter - 72 archlogosmallnq8.png

Levels Needed to Use to Fullest Potential - 85 Fishing

Cavern Specifics - This is a simple cavern. The only things inside are small patch of land which stands in front of a deep, large pool of dark blue water. Within this water are once thought-to-be prehistoric Coelecanth. These ancient fish require level 85 Fishing and a barb-tailed harpoon to be caught, and level 95 Cooking to be cooked properly. Each Coelecanth is worth 150 Fishing exp and 250 Cooking exp. They are eaten in a single bite, and when eaten they not only heal you by 23 hit points, but your defense level is slightly increased. (Anywhere from 1-5 Levels, depending on your defense level.)

varrockcaveyv8.png

Varrock Digsite Ancient Cavern - Located slightly north of the exam center of the Varrock Digsite.

Level Required to Enter - 67 archlogosmallnq8.png

Levels Needed to Use to Fullest Potential - 76 Slayer, 76 Archaeology

Cavern Specifics - This cavern has two main attractions: The SES located in the north rooms, and the slayer monsters in the west and east rooms. The SES requires level 76 Archaeology to dig at, and there is only one respawn. The level 76 Slayer monsters are the Level 120 Time Distorter and the Level 127 Space Distorter. These monsters are the only monsters that drop the coveted "Ancient Trowels," and "Ancient Brushes," which are the highest forms of Archaeology tools you can own. It is also worthy to note that this is a Multi-Combat area and the monsters are aggressive. Space Distorters use a special type of range attack while the Time Distorters use a mage-based attack, and both types of monsters can (and will) hit you at the same time. If you are here to Excavate the SES, it is recommended to wear high mage defense while praying range, as the range attack hits harder than the mage attack.

hauntedcavegz0.png

Haunted Woods Grotto - Located in the middle of the Haunted Woods, east of Canfis.

Level Required to Enter - 62 archlogosmallnq8.png

Levels Needed to Use to Fullest Potential - Level 75 Hunter

Cavern Specifics - This is also known as the "Hunter Cavern," as the only attraction this cavern has to offer is the ability to hunt Hallows Spirits. Hallows Spirits are evil, tiny hunter creatures which hide in hollow bark trees located around the dungeon. There are 15 trees, and 5 Spirits which hide inside of them. All you need to be able to hunt them is Level 75 Hunter, Butterfly Jars and a Dark Butterfly Net, which can be made by taking a Regular Butterfly net and using it on the Death Altar. All you must do is wait until red eyes glow from within a tree and click on the tree to attempt to catch the spirit. However, should you fail or click a tree when the red eyes are not glowing, the spirit will hit you for high damage, depending on your hit points level. Hallows Spirits, when caught, are worth a whopping 600 Hunter experience points each. Hallows Jars (Jars with Hallows Spirits in them) can be thrown at an enemy for high magic damage (depending on your magic level), and sometimes will lower the opponent's prayer points upon contact.[/hide]

[hide=Private Digsites - Unearthing Skill Related Treasures]Private Digsites-

privateheaderkg9.png

As you learn the ways of Archaeology and your level becomes higher, you will eventually be able to make use of Private Digsites. These are spots around the map where you set up your own personal camp and use your tools to dig deep into the earth to uncover lost treasures that can aid you in training other skills. Unlike most everything else you can dig up with Archaeology, these items are special and cannot be sold or traded. Setting up camp requires a minimum level of 25, and the higher your Archaeology level, the more places you will be able to set up at and the larger your camp will be.

Tents -

Setting up camp is much like setting up a hunter trap or making a fire, only the amount of time your camp will stay erect depends on your Archaeology level. The higher your level, the longer your tent will last. Once your tent has fallen (either it falls down naturally after its time runs out or you dissemble it) it will disappear, and you will need to wait 1 hour before you are able to set up another tent in order to continue excavating. Logging out does not dissemble your tent. When you log back in, it will be just as it was before you left.

Depending on your level, you will be able to purchase sturdier tents from each of the Archaeology Masters. The higher level the tent, the longer it will last, but also the more expensive it will be. Every 5 levels you gain past the Minimum Level Required for each tent will add more time to how long the tent will be able to last. Once your tent has fallen, you will not be able to set up camp again at that specific private digsite for 1 hour. Below is a list of all tents, the levels needed to use them, how much they cost, and how long they will stay erect at all levels:

Basic Tent25 archlogosmallnq8.png

Cost – 1,000 Gp

Minimum Time – 10 Minutes

Time Gained Every 5 Levels – 1 Minute

Maximum Time – 24 Minutes

Reinforced Tent45 archlogosmallnq8.png

Cost – 5,000 Gp

Base Maximum Time – 20 Minutes

Time Gained Every 5 Levels – 2 Minutes

Maximum Time – 40 Minutes

Dome Tent 65 archlogosmallnq8.png

Cost– 10,000 Gp

Base Maximum Time – 35 Minutes

Time Gained Every 5 levels – 5 Minutes

Maximum Time – 1 Hour 5 Minutes

Dragonhide Tent85 archlogosmallnq8.png

Cost– 25,000 Gp

Base Maximum Time – 1 Hour

Time Gained Every 5 Levels – 20 Minutes

Maximum Time – 1 Hour, 40 Minutes

Masters Tent 99 archlogosmallnq8.png

Cost – 75,000 Gp

Minimum/Maximum Time – 2 Hours, 30 Minutes

Space Allotment –

As you level the skill of Archaeology, you will find that the amount of space on the map which you fence off as your own private digsite increases. This means that the amount of fissures located inside your digsite increases as well, meaning less time to wait for fissures to respawn. Take note that each fissure takes 5 minutes to respawn, so having a higher level means you can make the most out of your tent’s maximum time. It is also important to keep in mind that you will have the same amount of fissures no matter the type of tent you are using.

Below are the levels in which your space allotment increases, as well as visuals to go along with them so you can see how they would be set up:

25 archlogosmallnq8.png3 Fissures

25privatels4.png

50 archlogosmallnq8.png6 Fissures

50privatesc0.png

75 archlogosmallnq8.png9 Fissures

75privateom6.png

Setting Up Your Private Digsite –

Once you have your tent and excavation tools, you are ready to begin digging for rare treasures in your own private digsite. Depending on your level and what types of treasure you are after, make your way to one of the Private Digsite Spots and set up your tent in the Beginning (level 25), Intermediate (Level 50) or Advanced (Level 75) Space Allotment. Now all you have to do is begin excavating and hope you can get your hands on rare skill-based treasure!

Please take note that Space Allotments are much like Farming patches. Though other players occupy the same space as you, your fissures are your own and cannot be seen or excavated by any other players!

Private Digsite Locations –

Each Private Digsite has something different to offer from another. Treasures buried in certain locations are different from one another, and there is no exception to this rule here. For example, when you dig up treasure in the Essence Mines you will uncover shards of Rune Armor, which aids you in the crafting of runes. However, when you dig up treasure in the Mort Myre Swamp, you will find that what you uncover is a bit more Herblore related. It is important to note that the experience you will gain from excavating at Private Digsites is severely lower than experience gained at Basic Digsites or SES’s. This means that Private Digsites are not a very good way of training Archaeology, and are mainly used to collect the skill rewards.

All rewards are dropped in pieces which you must collect a certain amount of and take to the Artifact Exchange Industry (located on the top floor of the Varrock Museum), and exchange for the full artifact. Below is a list of all the locations of Private Digsites, the levels needed to use them, the experience gained per treasure uncovered, and the list of treasures you can uncover:

Al Kharid Private Digsite – Directly West of the Scorpion Mines

Skill Based - Mining

Level Required – 25 archlogosmallnq8.png

Experience Per Excavated Fissure – 5

Possible Loot – Nothing, 10 Gp, 1 Iron Ore, Handle Shards, Pieces of a Ring, Preserved Beak

Special Item Information – When you have managed to collect either 25 Handle Shards or 50 Pieces of a Ring, you will be able to take them to the AEI for either a Dwarven Pickaxe Handle or an Ore Ring. When used on any type of Pickaxe, the Dwarven Pick Handle will turn the Pickaxe into a beefed-up version of its former self. A Rune Pickaxe would then be called a Dwarven Rune Pickaxe, and etc. The improved mining tool will increase the speed at which you mine an ore from a rock by approximately 10%. The Ore Ring, when worn, increases the experience you gain per ore mined by 20%. So a Coal Ore would give 60 Experience instead of its previous 50.

Fremennik Province – Located just east of Fremennik.

Skill Based - Hunter

Level Required – 38 archlogosmallnq8.png

Experience Per Excavated Fissure – 10

Possible Loot – Nothing, 25 Gp, 1 Bowstring, Wooden Splinters, Leather Pieces, Preserved Lump

Special Item Information – When you have managed to collect either 30 Wooden Splinters or 75 Leather Pieces, you will be able to take them to the AEI for either a Creature Blockade or a Bait Bag. When set up, the Creature Blockade keeps all Hunter creatures from crossing that space on the map. The amount of blockades you can have set up at one time is equal to the amount of traps you can set, but does not count as a trap. Meaning, you can have 5 blockades and 5 traps set up at the same time at level 80+ Hunter. The Bait Bag is a fairly simple contraption. It holds up to 50 of any kind of food that can be used, or is required to use, on a trap to help catch a hunter creature.

Waterbirth Island – Located near where the boat arrives and departs.

Skill Based - Fishing

Level Required – 46 archlogosmallnq8.png

Experience Per Excavated Fissure – 20

Possible Loot – Nothing, 50 Gp, 1 Harpoon, 1 Lobster Pot, Molten Blobs, Spear Shards, Preserved Wing

Special Item Information – When you have managed to collect either 40 Molten Blobs or 100 Spear Shards, you will be able to take them to the AEI for either a Scorching Cage or a Dual-Tipped Spear. The scorching cage is a unique item used to catch lobsters. However, instead of catching Raw Lobsters you will catch cooked ones. You must still have the correct level to cook the lobsters and you will only gain 60 cooking exp per lobster as opposed to the 120 you normally would. The Dual-Tipped Spear is a wonderful item used to catch tuna, swordfish or shark. Instead of catching one fish at a time, you will catch two, but will only gain half of the experience for the second fish. Meaning, if you catch 2 swordfish, you will gain 150 experience instead of 200.

Mort Myre Swamp – Located just south west of Canifis.

Skill Based - Herblore

Level Required – 59 archlogosmallnq8.png

Experience Per Excavated Fissure – 30

Possible Loot – Nothing, 75 Gp, 1 Mort Myre Fungus, 1 Avantoe, 1 Vial, Pieces of an Amulet, Moss Stones, Preserved Plate

Special Item Information – When you have managed to collect either 50 Pieces of an Amulet or 125 Moss Stones, you will be able to take them to the AEI for either an Amulet of Herblore or a Moss Crown. The Amulet of Herblore, when worn, allows you to mix potions using empty vials, rather than having to fill them with water beforehand. The Moss Crown, when worn, gives you the ability to mix an herb and a secondary ingredient into a vial at the same time, thus speeding up the potion-making process. The Amulet of Herblore and Moss Crown’s abilities can be combined.

Rogue’s Den – Newly built section located south of the safes.

Skill Based – Thieving

Level Required – 68 archlogosmallnq8.png

Experience Per Excavated Fissure – 45

Possible Loot – Nothing, 100 Gp, 1 Lockpick, 1 Uncut Gem (Sapphire-Diamond), Dark Slivers, Silk Threads, Preserved Horn

Special Item Information – When you have managed to collect either 100 Dark Slivers or 100 Silk Threads, you will be able to take them to the AEI for either an Orb of Confusion or a Thief’s Hood. The Orb of Confusion is an item that is activated when standing next to an npc that you can thieve from. When used, the orb will emit a wave of magic that stuns and confused an npc for 20 Seconds, allowing you to thieve from them with a 100% chance of success as many times as you can within those 20 seconds. The orb’s ability can only be used once every minute, however. The Thief’s Hood, when worn, increases the chances of success when thieving from an npc by 10%. Perfect for the 40 seconds between orb specials where you cannot confuse an npc. Note that the hood can be combined with the Gloves of Silence, gained from hunting.

The Grand Tree – Located within the grounds of the Gnome Agility Course.

Skill Based – Agility

Level Required – 79 archlogosmallnq8.png

Experience Per Excavated Fissure – 55

Possible Loot – Nothing, 250 Gp, 1 Agility Potion, 100 Feathers, Pieces of a Vest, Pieces of Legging, Preserved Fin

Special Item Information – When you have managed to collect either 100 Pieces of a Vest or 150 Pieces of Legging, you will be able to take them to the AEI for either a Slimming Vest or Slim Leggings. When worn, the Slimming Vest lowers your weight by 5kg and the Slim Leggings by 4kg. When both items are worn together, you will not only receive the lowered weight bonus, but all obstacles in every agility course will earn you 20% more experience points. So for example, an entire completed trip around the Ape Atoll Course will earn you 696 exp instead of the regular 580 exp. This does not count towards cashing in tickets at the Agility Arena.

The Essence Mines – Located within the Essence Mines.

Skill Based – Runecrafting

Level Required – 87 archlogosmallnq8.png

Experience Per Excavated Fissure – 70

Possible Loot – Nothing, 300 Gp, 10 Noted Pure Essence, 10 Noted Rune Essence, Small Essence Shards, Long Essence Shards, Heavy Essence Shards, Preserved Claw

Special Item Information – When you have managed to collect 150 Small Essence Shards, 100 Long Essence Shards or 100 Heavy Essence Shards, you will be able to take them to the AEI for an Essence Helm, Essence Platelegs or Essence Platebody. Each piece of armor increases the amount of experience you will gain for crafting runes by a specific percentage. The helm increases the exp by 5%, the platelegs by 10% and the Platebody by 15%. In total, you are able to gain an extra 30% exp per essence crafted when wearing the entire set. As an added bonus for wearing the set, you will also craft 10% more runes, rounded up to the nearest rune. Meaning if you have 91 Runecrafting, are using all 4 abyssal pouches plus an Abyssal Familiar, and are wearing the entire essence set, you will craft 135 Nature Runes instead of 112 and gain 713.7 exp instead of 549 exp.

Taverly Obelisk – Located in a newly developed section of the underground Summoning Obelisk.

Skill Based – Summoning

Level Required – 90 archlogosmallnq8.png

Experience Per Excavated Fissure – 80

Possible Loot – Nothing, 500 Gp, 10 Gold Charms, 7 Green Charms, 5 Crimson Charms, 2 Blue Charms, Parts of a Mask, Preserved Corpse

Special Item Information – When you have managed to collect 200 Parts of a Mask, you will be able to take them to the AEI for a Necromancer Mask. This amazing mask requires Level 75 Summoning to wear, and will hold up to 200 Familiar Scrolls. Also, when fighting monsters that drop charms, all charms dropped are multiplied by 2. So a Giant Rock Crab, for example, would drop 20 of each type of charm instead of 10. As an added bonus, when wearing this mask, the damage your familiar deals in combat will be increased by 15%.

The Wilderness Volcano – Located around the Volcano in the Wilderness.

Skill Based – Combat

Level Required – 99 archlogosmallnq8.png

Experience Per Excavated Fissure – 100

Possible Loot – Nothing, 1,000 Gp, Adamantite Bar, Magic Longbow (u), Fire Orb, Mythical Page, Fossil Plate, Binding String, Preserved Skull

Special Item Information – When you have managed to collect 500 Mythical Pages (Common), 2 Fossil Plates (Very Rare) AND 1 Binding String (Extremely Rare), you will be able to assemble the most ancient and sought-after treasure in all of Runescape: the Fossil Tome. You will need to take the pieces of the Tome to the AEI, and in addition, must pay a service fee of 5,000,000 Gp due to the immense care and attention needed to assemble it. This ancient, mythical book is wielded in the shield spot on your character and gives some of the best offensive bonuses in all the game. Below are the Fossil Tome’s stats:

Attack:

Stab: 25

Slash: 25

Crush: 25

Magic: 20

Range: 20

Defence:

Stab: 10

Slash: 10

Crush: 10

Magic: 10

Range: 10

Summoning: 15

Other:

Strength: 8

Prayer: 5

In addition to these stats, the Fossil Tome has a special ability which is activated by selecting the “Operate Fossil Tome” option. When used in combat, the special will completely drain your opponent’s prayer. This can only be used once every hour however, so choose when to use it wisely.[/hide]

[hide=Summoning - Prehistoric Beasts]The Prehistoric Factor

skullqk2.gif + ancientboneus8.gif + charmxa8.png + shardcx4.gif = rawrkw9.gif

As if digging up treasures to increase your wealth or experience wasn’t enough, at certain Private Digsites, SES’s and Main Digsites you may be lucky enough to unearth a naturally preserved chunk or body part of a prehistoric beast. These, while having no monetary value, serve no purpose other than to the skill of Summoning. This means they cannot be sold or traded to anyone. Ancient Summoners used beasts far more vicious thousands of years ago, but ever since that time, it has been very difficult, if almost impossible to find the required ingredients to revive these fearsome beasts in present time. That’s where you, the Archaeologist, come in. Manage to retrieve one or more of these corpses from the ground and you may find yourself in companionship with a very handy combat familiar.

These familiars are very useful in many ways. Firstly, they typically hit stronger and more accurately than other familiars around their level. On top of this, they still have other bonuses that can help you with skilling as well. As if this weren’t enough to convince you, all the prehistoric beasts use a gold charm to be summoned, so they finally give gold charms more of a use when training summoning. However, in addition to whichever preserved body part you need to make one of these familiars, you also will need an Ancient bone, which can be dug up via Archaeology or bought from another player or the Grand Exchange. For even more information on these fantastic beasts, see the "Final Notes, Tips and Tricks" section of the guide. Below is a list of all the familiars and their abilities:

[hide=Archaeological Dangers - Not Just a Picnic in the Park]Archaeological Dangers –

While the rewards may be great and the title of Master Archaeologist may seem extremely appealing, one would be foolish to think the road to riches is an easy one. The Archaeology Skill has three areas of danger which can affect you as you find your ways into caverns, dig up rock samples and make use of Private Digsites. Below is a list of each of the dangers and when they can occur:

Equipment Accidents

trowelrh4.pngbrushzj7.png

~Sometimes at lower levels, when excavating rock samples from any location, your character, with lack of experience, may accidentally cut him or herself with one of the excavation tools. The damage that occurs can be anywhere from 1 to 15, based on your hitpoints level. While this may not seem entirely dangerous, it can sometimes decide a less desirable fate when digging at dangerous places such as the Kalphite Queen SES or the Wilderness Volcano, where you will be taking damage from enemies as it is. The higher your Archaeology level, the less of a chance you will hurt yourself while excavating.

~When using lower leveled tools, it is possible to break them while excavating or cleaning. Your level does not affect these chances. It is all based on which tools you use. Ancient tools will never break while cleaning or excavating.

Environmental Blunders

The world in which you use your archaeological skills is not necessarily always a safe one. Things based on weather and the landscaping of the earth can be catastrophic to your character's safety.

~When opening up entrances to caverns, your character may not successfully ensure the passageway is sturdy enough, and upon entrance to the cave it may collapse on top of you, causing large amounts of damage and lowering your Archaeology level. The damage you will receive is equal to half of your hitpoints level, and your archaeology will temporarily be decreased by 5. With a higher level, your character will learn how to make better entranceways, thus decreasing the chance of collapsing the cave.

poisonlogotr1.png

~While excavating rock samples or opening caves, sometimes deposits of harmful natural chemicals can be released from the earth, which will poison or disease your character. The poison damage will always start at 6, and the disease will begin at 10. Should this happen while excavating rock samples, you will not receive a sample, and the fissure will still disappear. This is always out of your control, and your archaeology level will not decrease the chance of bumping into these nasty surprises.

~When digging at Private Digsites, occasionally a large gust of wind or storm can come briefly by and knock down your tent. Should this happen, you will still have to wait the hour before you can set another tent up, making this a very unpleasant random event.

Rival Archaeologists

rivalxi9.png

~No one ever said being an Archaeologist would be a friendly profession. Randomly, when digging at Private Digsites a Rival Archaeologist will unfairly barge into your private territory and begin excavating your fissures. Should this happen, you will need to act fast, for he seems to have a very high level and can excavate a fissure in almost seconds flat. Try to out-excavate him if you can. He will go away once all of your fissures have been excavated. This event is entirely out of your control, but with a higher level it will be easier for you to out-excavate the thief.[/hide]

[hide=Final Notes, Tip and Tricks]Final Notes, Tips and Tricks

~ Always use the highest equipment you can. The better the tools you are using, the faster exp you will get and the better the loot you will find.

~ The money makers of this skill are obviously the SES's. The only drawback to using these spots is the fact that they are extremely slow to respawn and at the high levels, there is typically only 1 respawn in an SES.

~ Be extremely cautious when attempting to excavate the high leveled SES's. The Kalphite Queen and King Black Dragon Lairs are potentially fatal if you don't approach them the correct way.

~ Turn auto-retaliate off while mining at an SES filled with aggressive monsters. If your auto-retaliate is on, you will attack the monster(s) attacking you instead of continuing to excavate the SES.

~ Use the main digsites as a way for faster experience when you want to level and don't particularly care about the loot you will receive. The fissures respawn within 30 seconds of being excavated.

~ Make use of the Ancient Caverns. They contribute to other skills, and, though they aren't as profitable as the SES's, you can usually make some decent gp out of the amenities they offer.

~ Also note, the experience and rewards you receive from larger rocks samples may seem high, but even at higher levels, you are not always guaranteed to get them. Furthermore, in the case of the Base Levels needed to excavate SES's, the ratio for larger rock samples is balanced out. For example, at level 86 Archaeology (the base level needed to excavate at the KBD SES) you will excavate mostly Small Rock Samples from the King Black Dragon SES. However, as you level, the chances for Medium, Large and Giant Rock Samples will increase. That being said, even at level 99 Archaeology, it is still very difficult to excavate a Giant Rock Sample from the KQ SES. So don't worry about the rewards being overpowered.

~ To use the Ice Path Cavern to its fullest, it is suggested you use the Trollheim teleport to get there, bring full imp boxes (level 71 Hunter) to be able to bank more Coelecanth per load, and teleport to Castle Wars to bank via a dueling ring.

~ The damage taken from failing on a Hallows Spirit is proportional to your hit points, but you can still die easily if you aren't paying attention. It is recommended you bring food with you while Spirit Hunting to prevent yourself from dying.

~ Hallows Jars (Jars with Hallows Spirits in them) require level 70 Magic to use, and can hit anywhere from 15 (Max at level 70 magic) to 25 (Max at level 99 magic). Also, about 20% of the time, the jar will lower your opponent's prayer points by 25% of the damage dealt upon contact.

~ Time Distorters (Mages) drop Ancient Trowels while Space Distorters (Rangers) drop Ancient Brushes. The area is multi-combat and you will be hit from both monsters at the same time. Also, Time Distorters have the ability to teleport around the room, while Space Distorters have the ability to teleport you around the room. So be careful when attempting to kill them. They can get very aggrivating.

~ To make a Sunlight Lantern you need 80 Smithing and Level 62 Crafting. You will need to Smith 5 Gold Bars into the Sunlight Lantern's body, place a charged fire orb into the body, and place a glass lens onto that to make the Unlit Sunlight Lantern. After that, all you need is 90 Firemaking and a tinderbox to light it. It will never extinguish.

~ There is a small chance from all Rock Samples that you will find nothing inside. In the event that this happens, you will only receive half the cleaning exp you normally would.

~Treasure found in Private Digsites are not too easy to come by. On average, you have a 1/3 chance of digging up a piece of a skill based item. Also, about 10% of the time, you will dig up nothing, making Private Digsites not necessarily efficient for making cash.

~The odds of recieving a Mythical Page at the Wilderness Volcano Private Digsite are about 1/3. However, the odds of recieving a Fossil Plate are about 1/500 and the odds of a Binding String are around close to 1/1,000. This makes the Fossil Tome an extremely hard item to get a hold of.

~Once your tent has fallen you must wait 1 hour before you can set up camp at that same digsite. This means while you wait for that one hour to pass, you may still go utlilize one of the other Private Digsites, if you have the levels and the need to do so.

~If you die while wearing any skill based item, you will always lose that item and will not be able to retrieve it from your grave. To get another, you must collect all the pieces of that item again and take them to the AEI, just as you did the first time. This means you should be very careful where you take your Skill-Based treasures.

~Preserved parts of prehistoric familiars are fairly rare rewards found inside rock samples. The best way to collect them is most likely to use SES's and Private Digsites, as you can recieve only one type of preserved part at each location, making your preserved part hunting a little easier. However, it is not too rare to find more randomly chosen parts around the main digsites.

~Preserved parts cannot be sold or traded, so if you want a Dinosaur familiar you will really need to work on your Archaeology. That being said, Ancient Bones can be bought from other players, but keep in mind they will be very, very expensive, let alone almost impossible to get off the GE, as they yield the highest prayer experience of any prayer bone in the game. This means as an estimate, players will probably sell them for a minimum of around 6-10k gp each.[/hide]

[hide=The Archaeology Achievement Cape]The Archaeology Achievement Cape

skillcapearchvd1.pngarchskillcapehi0.png

Once you have mastered the skill and achieved Level 99 Archaeology, head on over to the Master Archaeologist at the Varrock Digsite and buy a brand new cape for 99,000 Gp. The base colour is royal gold with light brown for the trim. When you use the cape's emote, your character will dig a large hole, jump in, and you will see him fling tons of treasure from it. Of course, that treasure disappears after your character has finished the emote. ;)[/hide]

Very good point! Hadn't thought of that for some odd reason.

And added to the list. :)

First of all, very well thought out; good job. =D>

The way you portrayed the archeology skill would fit well in Runescape in my opinion. Add me to support. :)

This is one of the most well thought out suggestions on the Tip It Forums. You clearly nearly every catagory for this skill unlike most people-who just come up with a skill and leave the rest for Jagex. 10/10. I would love this skill, but if it came out- it would probably be members(and I'm F2P) :( .

May as well make my support official. ;) As a F2P I won't be able to enjoy this thing, but as I told you I've always liked the treasure hunting thing, and the little surprise you get at the end. This is a great idea - I admit I wasn't all that convinced with Archaeology at first but the scope of the skill has gotten me hooked. :P

I'll try and get those item images to you before the end of next week, but things are getting a bit hectic now even in the holidays, so the prospect is less likely. :| I'll do my best. :)

Good job again! :D

Thanks, Faelenof! You have helped me quite enough as it is, so don't worry if you can't make any images. We have plenty anyway, I think. =-p

Thanks to everyone else who has posted, too. Your support is much appreciated.

tbh this is the best topic that i have read in my life =) i mean better than a whole lot of a variety of topics :D

the best idea for a skill either.. and tbh i wouldn't be suprised if this wouldn't be a real skill.

great job man!

Thank you Soz, that's, um...very encouraging. :XD:

I will add you to the supporters list.

And I will be sending this to Jagex once I feel I have enough supporters behind it. They won't even consider reading it if they think no other players have given feedback on it.

This has got to be the most intelligent suggestion I have read in these forums! The rewards are good, but not overpowered. The challenge involved makes the rewards you do get worth it, and everything suggested just seems to make perfect sense.

Perhaps we could add on an additional benefit. A new set of armor for each of the combat classes, requiring Level 75 in that skill to use? Maybe even make it so you have a rare chance of obtaining a piece of the armor from the SES' and require a high Smithing and Crafting level to assemble them. And just to [anger] the merchants, make it untradeable!

That's a very good suggestion, and something that I had originally intended to put in from the beginning, but never did.

I think the approach we want to take with the armor is not combat, though. Perhaps more skill related. I will think on this some more and update it when I come up with a good solution.

Perhaps we could think of several ideas for skill "boosts" which the rare armor could offer. Perhaps a Runecrafting armor which gives a bonus X% experience when crafting runes? Or maybe an increased speed when mining and fishing? Who knows, the possibilities are endless!

Yeah, I've thought of a way to implement them. It'd add yet another dimension to the skill, making it even more fun to train.

But I don't have time to add it right now, so I will when I get the chance. ;)

I'm really glad people like this skill suggestion, especially since Archaeology has been bashed as an idea in the past...

That's exactly why I did this. I was always for the skill, but a LOT of people bashed the idea down because they were too narrow-minded to think past the actual word Archaeology. Yes, at first glance it, just based on the name, most would think it would be boring.

But then again...look at the names of other skills we have. Farming? Hardly sounds more exciting than Archaeology, but people in the end loved what it brought to the game.

Hopefully this will get enough support so I can send it to Jagex.

i'll do it on pivot..

unless someone else is really good and can make an animation too.

but.. so far no one said any bad points to it outsanity =)

you should get like 100 support in a week :D

and tbh this idea is better than bank space. :D
