Very childish.

It is a plain and simple fact that people with high end PCs and broadband, and who are playing on servers based in their country do experience lag.

I shall try not to to come across as boastful, being fully aware of how quickly people here leap upon any weakness in your argument, but I have a high end Dell with broadband and I always use world 23, unless I'm doing something specific like the Duel Arena in which case I would use its specific world. World 23 is in the UK, where I live and couple with my internet and pc should all mean that I ought not encounter lag, and usually I don't although there are times, namely on the busiest servers, where I do. Anyone who claims lag is not the fault of the server, (on ANY site) is making a ridiculous claim becuase servers have their limits (London eye website when it first opened, online games like CS) and they do lag without any fault in the specifications of the site's visitor.

Now that's a ridiculous claim :P

In truth lag occurs all the time - whenever some packets of information have to make a round trip from client, to server and back to client again, it takes time, so there is "lag" between when you initiate an action and the action actually being initiated. Most of the time, the lag is imperceptible and events appear to occur in real time. Occasionally (or in some people's cases much more than occasionally) the time taken to respond to the invocation of an action is perceivably greater than real-time, which is the point where people rant on forums about it.

Such delays can be caused by any link in the chain. Having a broadband connection doesn't give you a direct link to Jagex's servers, usually packets will make between one and three dozen hops between your modem and the server. Tracert it and see how many you have between you and your nearest server, there are at least 15 between me in Melbourne and World 112 in Sydney. Any one of those machines could hold up a couple of packets and cause a perceptible lag. Alternately the problem could be related to load on the server - it could just as easily be a processor intensive process running on the client machine - like an antivirus update self installing. I get terrible lag when I run the microwave oven in my office (it interferes with the wireless network).

Oh come on...

Polnar had it all pretty much right. Just a few more things to add but apart from that it's fine.

Oh and this is pasted from the RSOF.

[hide]SUFFERING FROM LAG?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please do not post about lag on this forum without giving system information such as hardware specifications, software versions and Internet Service Provider speed and name. Without this information, it is simply a rant and will be locked.

This problem is normally caused by either playing RuneScape from a slow computer or connecting on a poor quality Internet connection between your computer and our server. Even if you're using a super-fast computer connected using an ultra-fast cable link, it is still possible that one of the machines on the route from us to you isn't up to the task, resulting in poor performance occasionally.

To reduce the problem, you can:

1) Try using other servers even if they are geographically further away, you may get less lag due to your connection taking a different route. For instance, even if you live in the US you might get a better link to our UK servers.

2) Make sure there aren't any other programs using your Internet connection. Close any unnecessary software which may be running on your computer. In particular, don't try playing RuneScape at the same time as downloading files or watching Web TV as this doesn't work very well!

3) Try playing at a different time of day, when the internet is quieter and the various routers across the internet aren't overloaded.

4) On the "Play-game" page, where you choose between high and low detail, you will see a scroll at the bottom of the page. Try clicking on the drop-down menu on this scroll and select "Signed Applet using SUN Java" and then proceed to load the game as normal.

5) Try improving your computer (please read the Basic Help Guide for how to improve lag if this is caused by your computer).

6) Try using a different ISP (Internet-Service-Provider).

Our servers have a very good Internet link so it's unlikely to be a problem at our end. However, rest assured that we monitor our servers closely and do our best to fix any problems if they arise. There will usually be a sticky created if there are any known problems with our servers.[/hide]
