-Fast and Easy Money from Level 1 Clues- [Version 2.1]

INTRODUCTION

-Welcome to Granzi’s guide to making money from Level 1 clues-

Level 1 clue scrolls are some of the most underrated drops in the game. Often scorned by players for having “junk” rewards, these clues have the unfortunate label of not being worth the time it takes to complete them. Yet with the proper equipment and a simple-to-follow plan of action, level ones shed that distinction to provide a quick way to earn some extra cash. Whether you’re looking for a fun way to break up the monotony of training a skill, or would like an alternate way method of thieving or combat, clue scroll hunting offers an accessible and profitable activity to nearly all players.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION (Section 1)

First, some basic information on clue scrolls in general:

Most clue scrolls are received from monster drops. The basic premise involves the player completing a series of tasks, while collecting additional clues along the way that eventually culminate in a reward. These tasks may require you to finish puzzles, solve riddles, or find the location on a map. Clue scrolls are separated into 3 levels; the higher the clue level, the greater the potential rewards. However, rewards are random in that there is no way to tell which scroll will yield which reward.

Level 1 clue scrolls have several pronounced benefits:

  • They are dropped by lower level monsters that are simple and quick to kill.
  • The locations to retrieve your next clue are easily accessible to even low combat players.
  • Aside from a spade and the (cheap) items you may need to complete an emote clue, no additional equipment is required. [see the Emote Clue section at the end of the post for more details.]
  • The length of the trail is short; usually no more than 4-5 clues long.

NOTE: For a more in-depth description of how clues work, as well as a very helpful guide on the various clue scrolls themselves, see Tip.It’s Treasure Trails Guide.

In this guide however, we will be focusing on one particular method of obtaining clues.

THE LOCATION (Section 2)

By far the fastest and easiest way to obtain level 1 clues is from HAM members. Not only do the guards drop clues when killed, but clues are also among the loot you can thieve from the ordinary members walking around the cavern.

GettingThere.jpg

To reach the HAM dungeon, walk slightly northwest from Lumbridge castle into the forest, or head due east from Draynor (using a glory teleport). Pick the locked trapdoor located within the ruins of a tower (no lockpick required). You will find yourself at one end of a passage that leads to a large central chamber packed with male and female HAM members, as well as attackable HAM guards.

REQUIREMENTS (Section 3)

To successfully complete this guide, there are some low level skill requirements that you must meet:

  • At least a Thieving level of 15.
  • At least a Attack level of 5. (Some scrolls require you to equip steel weapons)
  • At least a Defense level of 20. (Some scrolls require you to equip studded leather items)
  • Recommended Healthpoints level of 30 or above. (Omits the need for large amounts of food)
  • Recommended Range level of 20 or above. (A few of the emote clues require you to equip a coif)

In addition, having the magic level needed to teleport to the major cities will save you a lot of walking time.

SUGGESTED EQUIPMENT (Section 4)

This setup will maximum the speed at which you complete clues:

CharacterSetup.jpg

  • Full set of HAM robes (Very important, it minimizes your odds of being caught while thieving)
  • A full set is composed of 7 pieces: hood, logo, robe top, robe bottom, cape, gloves, and boots
  • A good, fast melee weapon (If you choose only to pickpocket HAM members, omit this)
  • Dueling ring (For fast bank access)
  • Defender (If you choose to attack HAM guards)

INVENTORY (Section 5)

Inventory.jpg

  • 5k - 10k coins
  • Air staff
  • 5-10 Fire runes
  • 5-10 Earth runes
  • 5-10 Water runes
  • 5-10 Law runes
  • Games necklace
  • Enchanted glory amulet (optional)
  • Enchanted lyre (optional)
  • Enchanted broom (optional)
  • Lumbridge ring 3 (for cabbage-port and run replenish)
  • A few super energy potions or a spirit terrorbird/bull ant familiar
  • 5 - 10 pieces of low level food
  • Spade

You will need the coins to purchase items needed to complete emote clues. The air staff and runes are used to teleport to the major Runescape cities. Enchanted jewelry or other items that can teleport you will also work. In picture above, I have tuna in my inventory to heal from the damage dealt from thieving. This is probably overkill, and trout or cakes would work just as fine if not better. Finally, you need the spade to dig up casket clues.

NOTE: You may also choose to bring along weight reducing items such as boots of lightness, penance gloves, or hunter capes to save run during the clue. It's still recommended to wear the full HAM set while thieving though, unless you have a fairly high thieving level. You could bring super energy potions for this purpose as well.

METHOD (Section 6)

Take the recommended items and equipment with you to the HAM dungeon. Once there, begin thieving the HAM members. I find that female HAM are the best option to pickpocket from, as they only hit 1s and require a lower thieving level than the male HAM (meaning you are caught less often). While thieving, you may choose to keep some of the other items, but this fills up spaces in your inventory faster and means spending more time dropping unwanted junk. If you would like, bring a chisel to cut the low level gems that are common loot into stackable bolt tips.

ThievingMethod.jpg

Eat as needed to replenish lost health. If you are caught too many times, you will either be teleported outside of the HAM dungeon, or placed in a small jail within the cave system. Neither is much more than an occasional nuisance. Either pick the trapdoor again to re-enter the dungeon, or pick the jail door (no lockpick required) and walk down the corridor to the main chamber.

Another method to supplement your thieving would be to kill the HAM Guards (level 12, 18, and 22) If you have a low hitpoints or defense level, I recommend attacking only the level 12s, since there’s no difference in the clue drop rate but they're the easiest to kill.

With everything considered, I highly prefer thieving female HAM members, since they give you clues almost ridiculously fast.

AttackingMethod.jpg

Within 2-5 minutes, you will usually receive a clue scroll!

ClueScroll.jpg

When you have completed the clue scroll and gotten your reward, simply teleport to Lumbridge or Draynor, bank and repeat.

A few tips to keep in mind:

  • Don't forget to utilize all the -free- forms of transportation. Fairy rings, gnome gliders, and spirit trees require no runes and can often drop you closer to a clue location than traditional teleports.
  • If you are crafting an item for an emote clue, the best place to go is Al-Kharid. You can mine gold or silver from the scorpion chasm mine, purchase the necessary molds from the local crafting shop, and smelt your creation at the furnace.
  • A quick way to travel from Al-Kharid to Port Sarim is to get sent to jail. Talk to Shantay at the Shantay Pass area, claim you’re an outlaw, and you'll be teleported to the Port Sarim jail when you refuse to pay a small fine. Pick the cell door to leave (no lockpick required).
  • If you plan on using this method frequently, make sure to save the equipment needed for the emote clues. They repeat fairly often and you'll save the time of gathering them again.

EMOTE CLUE ITEMS (Section 7)

Below I've listed some of the more common items and equipment you may need to complete an emote clue in alphabetical order (For more information about Emote Clues, take a look at the Tip.It’s Treasure Trails Guide). In addition, I've also noted where you may obtain or buy these items and at what price (if applicable). In some cases, you will either need to make the item yourself, or purchase it from other players.

None of them are very expensive, and it may be a good idea to stock up on these items before you begin collecting clues in order to save time.

NOTE: Since the addition of the Grand Exchange, it has become even easier to collect these common items. Varrock teleports (to access the GE) may come handy if you choose not to gather these things before beginning a clue.

REWARDS (Section 8)

So what can you expect to earn for your labors? Level 1 rewards range from the useless and mundane (runes, low metal weapons, and bows) to the excellent (god vestments, trimmed wizard armor, and elegant costumes). Don't be discouraged if you complete a clue scroll, only to find that your reward looks like this:

BadClue.jpg

I find that on average, the ratio of bad to good rewards is about 3:1, with the odd excellent reward thrown in about every 5 clues. Keep in mind that your ability to obtain and finish these scrolls quickly will mean you make quite a bit of money on average. In addition, alching or selling your basic rewards to shops will usually result in enough money to cover the cost of getting those emote clue items. Law and elemental runes are common rewards that help replenish your supply of teleports. You may also decide to sell some of the lesser treasure trail rewards to other players for a decent amount.

In the past, I've averaged about 250-350k worth of items every hour. I am able to complete at least 5 clues during that time (since having conducted more extensive trials, I've found this number has risen to about 6-7 clues an hour). Below is a log of the rewards I received over a one and a half hour period:

[hide=Old Clue Log]Clue 1: Black platebody, black dagger, 32 air runes, green firelighters

Interesting guide. I will say that it is very well layed out. I probably won't be using it, seeing as I prefer higher-leveled clues, but I do congratulate you on the concept.

I noticed you have links to some pictures. That's great, but It would probably make it easier on people for you to insert the pictures directly into the guide, without any links. I personally use Photoshop for that. Just a suggestion.

Thanks for the comments. I came up with this method when I was working on raising my thieving level. I don't do it very often anymore, but sometimes doing a clue is a nice break from whatever else I'm doing.

About the images: I haven't used BBCode in a long time, so I've forgotten how to insert them directly into the post. Can you refresh my memory? :)

I've tried killing other monsters for their clues, but for me, nothing drops them as fast nor as frequently as HAM does. I might expand this guide in the future though.

Very well layed out guide, and a good method for lower levels to make some cash! You could maybe add a list of all the Uri clothing needed for elvel one clues to make it even better. :)

9/10.

Hm... good idea. Since Tip.It doesn't organize clues by clue level, no one would know which clues you're likely to get.

I'll see if I can dredge out all the different clues from the depth of my brain.

i also heard that you get a lot of god pages from lvl 1 clues. You might want to put that in for high level players that don't have the money to fill there god book.

I'm actually inclined to believe that. For instance, in that example log I got 2 sara pages in 2 hours.

Also, I added an Emote Clues section that lists the most common items used and where to find them.

[Edit- And credited those who gave me ideas to expand the guide.]

Good for low lvls, but it high lvls should do lvl 3s, as its more of a chance(or only possible) for better stuff.

ware boots of lightness/penance gloves to reduce speed, it is more important then the slightly less chanceof getting cought

I've done this method a lot just for some fun and have some tips for it: If you can, get boots of lightness, spotted/spottier cape and barbarian gloves, so you weight less and can run longer, do wear the HAM equivalents when thieving though. Replace the hunter thieving gloves (forgot the name) for the HAM ones. Also get a few glories for quick tele to the hideout and other places. I also suggest to take high alch runes with you, you'll get a lot of alchable junk (loads of black items and air staffs).

When everything's been said and done, more has been said than done.

All skills 80+

I'd keep these things in your inventory for when you've gotten a clue. But when you're still thieving for one, you'll need the complete HAM set (unless you want to to be stunned multiple times).
