if you don't understand anything about computer hardware , then why did you ask people to list what they wanted... :-k

I don't have to dream. Mine got installed this fall.

General specs from the article (since I can't find an exact spec sheet yet):

1150 servers total

2300 Dual Core Opterons (series unknown)

Needless to say, 2 new industrial AC units and a massive diesel generator got installed outside the engineering building where's is now housed.

Edit: Because I can't spell 'say' correctly the first time...

Not exactly a hard question. :P

CPU: 2x Quad core Intel Core's (Extreme Edition). Whatever's the fastest.

Memory: 8 - 16GB DDR3 (Depends on board).

GFX: 4x ATi 1GB 2900XT's. (X-Fire).

Storage: RAID 0 1TB HDD (2 1TB HDD's) (For the OS) & an eSATA external 4 - 10TB HDD. Whatever you can get...

Monitors: 30" TFT Monitor & a 1080p projector.

All the other crap that goes with it, PSU (1KW), high spec soundcard... Etc.

Obviously an expensive mouse and keyboard.

That should set you back a few grand.

Just a 1KW PSU?

I believe that a 8800 requires about 300 Watts just to power itself, I guess the 2900XT's are roughly the same. And for four of them you'd be looking at about 1.2KW, just to power the Graphics Cards alone. You'd probably need a 2KW PSU just to be on the safe side.

Lol! A 2kW PSU? IIRC those don't even exist for PC's.

The most you will EVER need is, honestly, an 800-900w PSU.

They don't even make 2kw PSU's. The biggest ones out there run around 1.6kw.

Well it was just a example, you'd definatly need a bigger PSU than 1KW if just the cards themselves need 300Watts each...

power%20consumpt.png

Here is the article, it's roughly 328 Watts.

power consumption is always a focal point and some media outlets had concerns of the 2900XT drawing more power than what typical power supplies are able to output.

So four of them would be more than the 900 Watts one that you suggested Nadril.

That's max load on a single card though, which is rather easy to max out with current games. Distributing the load across 4 cards, even at the highest setting any game today can offer isn't going to result in all 4 cards being maxed out 100% of the time and drawing full power. Claiming you need an extra 800 watts on top of the max load on the cards to power the rest of the rig is ridiculous too.

It doesn't really matter either way, if you're dumping enough money into a rig to set up quad video cards, you can afford to buy and/or mod a case to fit a second PSU to support that added power load, if it's even needed.
