Overall Game of the Year: 2007

Featured Replies

Well, now that we're into December, the release schedule for the rest of the year isn't all that significant. Since likely all the best games on all platforms this year have come out (ironically, in the last 3 months or so), we might as well start speculating what the Overall GOTY is going to be in major multi-platform publications, as well as talk about what our own personal opinion is on the matter. We can also talk about games that came out this year and were of utmost quality, but won't likely be winning the GOTY awards. So let's get to it!

There are a huge variety of games in contention, spanning all important platforms. As I see it, the following games all have something that puts them in the running for GOTY:

Orange Box (PC, 360, PS3)

Mass Effect (360)

Call of Duty 4 (PC, 360, PS3)

Bioshock (PC, 360)

Crysis (PC)

Super Mario Galaxy (Wii)

Rock Band (360, PS3)

Halo 3 (360)

As well, there are a few other games worth mentioning, though they won't likely be landing the top spot:

Unreal Tournament 3 (PC, PS3) [PS3 version out soon, Xbox 360 to come next year]

Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass (DS)

Uncharted: Drakes Fortune (PS3)

Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction (PS3)

Metroid Prime 3: Corruption (Wii)

S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl (PC)

World in Conflict (PC)

Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions (PSP)

Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock (PC, MAC, 360, PS3, PS2, Wii)

Virtua Fighter 5 (360, PS3)

Enemy Territory: Quake Wars (PC) (360 and PS3 to come in 08)

This is by no means an exhaustive list, but I think this is a fairly adequate representation of this year in gaming. If there are any titles I've missed, please do include them. You obviously don't need to have played all these games to give an opinion (unless you were a critic it's unlikely you've played half of these). However, I'd still like to hear opinions based on any experience, as well as what you've heard and the overall impact and hype generated by the title.

Here's my personal decision, hidden because it's fairly long.

[hide]Personally I'm going to discard all the games in the second category, and focus on those in the first. I'm going to slowly discard games (in order) until I come up with a winner.

For overall GOTY, I believe Crysis, and Rock Band can be discarded. While both well-recieved games, I don't think they quite have what it takes for this title. I also personally think the hype of Halo 3 has been somewhat overshadowed by other games this year, despite it's crazy sales and huge ad campaign, atleast among the actual gaming community. Mass Effect has also generated some hype and gotten good reviews, but I don't think overall GOTY hype and reviews. COD4, which I would say has the fourth best chance, has gotten phenominal reviews among critics and fans, but still, I feel it may fall short of the prize.

That leaves us with Bioshock, Orange Box, and Galaxy, the ones that I think have the best chance to gain GOTY in the major publications. Honestly, I can see it going to any of these, especially since most sites/mags seem to be grouping Orange Box into a single package. Despite this, I don't think Orange Box will win game of the year. It was recieved very well, and has a lot of talk about it everywhere especially since has 3 platforms (2 now, another soon), but I just don't think it has enough to win itself Overall GOTY.

So that leaves us with two. I honestly believe these are the two titles that will win the GOTY awards, and I think they will each garner more than a few awards from different places. However, since I'm only able to pick one I'm going to go with Bioshock. My justification for this, despite it's overall lower score on metacritic, is that even through the minefield of releases that has been the last few months, it is still consistantly mentioned as a major contender. It also has been cited as highly derivative of System Shock 2, but since most people haven't played that anyway, this is the first of its kind for many PC and 360 gamers. That leads to my most important point: It has sold well and been widely revered on both the PC and 360. This puts it at a distinct advantage over Galaxy, which is only on the Wii, representing a much smaller availability than the 360 and PC combined crowd. This has put other titles in previous years into the overall GOTY spot in some publications. For example, Gamespy's PC game of the year 2003 went to Call of Duty, with KotoR placing 3rd on the PC list. However, the combined Xbox and PC praise was enough to give it Overall GOTY there, with CoD placing at #6.

So despite the universally high acclaim of Super Mario Galaxy, I believe the comparable praise of Bioshock, combined with its success on two platforms, will give it the push it needs to be considered GOTY.

Overall GOTY: Bioshock

As for personal GOTY, that remains to be seen. I've been at unviversity for the last few months, so I've been too busy to adequately give titles of interest enough attention. Over the month-long winter break, that should change :).[/hide]

Now good luck to you picking a winner. Please put some careful consideration into this, it will make it a much more interesting subject. Don't let fanboyism make your choice for you.

bestsiggycopy5bo.jpg

I'm with you, the two choices would be between Orange box and bioshock for me.

Personally it is a really tough choice. I mean,

Bioshock: This was the game that proved that games can be an artform. Simply everything about it just brought together such an amazing experience. The storyline was pretty damn good as well, not the best but it didn't really matter because the presentation of it was brilliant..

Graphical wise this is one of the best looking games of the year IMO. Yes, Crysis is incredibly realistic and all that jazz but I just think that Bioshock has so much more style in it.

Orange box: Probably was my most anticipated game of the year. So, where to start? Well, I'd like to give a HUGE shout out to portal. This game, even despite its fairly short length, seems to have been recieved incredibly well in the gaming community. And, of course, it was well deserved -- Portal was simply a breath of fresh air in the FPS world, and had a great sense of humor that kept me laughing while scratching my brain on what the hell to do next.

The fact is is that Portal was seriously probably the best thing to come out of TOB.

Episode 2? Good stuff -- I mean, it's the Half life series what do you expect? It was full of action and never had a boring spot where I just wished to get to the next. Plus, the final scene was simply amazing in terms of action and difficulty -- not many games have had that. Throw in a quite good advancement of the plot and it may have been one of the best in the half life series so far (Or, at least, very close to the first).

Team fortress 2? Well, great multiplayer. I haven't played it much recently because I've waited for more maps and such (and I'm busy with WoW/School) but for a multiplayer experience it is one of the best of the year, only really close to CoD 4. The graphical style of it is brilliant as it showed what the source engine can actually do and it looks damn good. Gameplay wise it came out very ballanced, VaLVE has only really had to do one or two small tweaks (for pyros, which was a bug) for ballance changes -- they really hit the mark on this one. When each class has something unique to bring the team you know its a winner.

Now, I think I have to go with The orange box as a GoTY still. Why? Well even though Bioshock was just dripping with style and (as I stated before) proved that games could be an artform -- I just had so much more fun playing the games in the orange box.

From a gamers point of view I view the orange box as the superior game, while from an artists point of view I point towards bioshock. Overall though TOB is just too fun to pass up.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R Or the orange box.

I mean its so under rated but it is truly an amazing game. At first i thought crossing oblivion style with fps would never work but they made it work.

Orange box just for portal alone! :P

I feel so out of the loop ... the only one of those games I've played is ETQW.

Unreal Tournament 3 gets my vote. I'm a huge fan of that franchise.

Harrington.gif

Galaxy could very well win GoTY because of its extremely high scores everywhere, though the game I'd like to see most win is the Orange Box (if only for Portal and TF2).

Oh wow, I've got to say Super Mario Galaxy.

They brought together all the fun from the other games, and packed it into Galaxy.

This is the equation they used to make the game.

You really should put Assasin's Creed on that list.

Easily Super Mario Galaxy. I think we've seen the re-evolution of platforming in SMG.

Close behind: Bioshock, and Mass Effect.

Orange box isn't a game, it's a game package.

Bioshock or COD4 for me.

Orange box isn't a game, it's a game package.

Still sold as one so it is elligable for the GOTY, not the individual games.

I so say the Orange box or Bioshock.

Why aren't PC games included on your list? :-k . Bioshock was pretty fun but I think halo 3 should be taken off the list. Just because the first version of the game was excellent, it doesn't mean that they should be nominated every time for making crappier versions. Halo 1> Halo 3 still imo.

That'd be great and all if those had came out in 2007.

ps: all of those I listed ARE PC GAMES

  • Author

In fact, if you take disregard that some of those games are getting ported to 360 from PC next year (which technically you should), there are more PC games than any other platform.

Oh ya, and even though I'm in no way a Halo fan:

Halo 3>Halo 1>Halo 2

bestsiggycopy5bo.jpg

I'm going to give 3 games, and say why.

Lemee start with the surprising one..

[hide=Halo 3]Now, I'm no Halo fanboy. Personally, I think Halo is kind of overrated although I do enjoy playing it. But look at the fanbase, here. The first time I went on Xbox Live with any Halo game, I was swarmed by masses of people of all skill levels ready to play the game of my choosing. Not to mention the hype behind Halo 3. G4 did a TV special....an entire New York City street was shut-down specifically for the launch of the game...millions upon millions of people waited hours and hours to get the game...strategies, plans, teams, clans, everything was planned before launch...any game with a fanbase THIS BIG and enough hype to make it one of the most anticipated and best selling media releases ever deserves some sort of recognition. Bungie did a wonderful job making a fun game.

Not to mention the game itself, after all. The new weapons added a load of new strategies to my arsenal. The graphics were amazing, also..water rippled and splashed as I sent a Warthog blasting in flames into a stream, The Banshee's top had the eerie green glow on it as it whirred around the sky, firing at anything and everything..the plasma shot up and twirled in a great big mass as the Wraith exploded...it's a beautiful game. And the controls are as great as ever. I know it's Halo 3, I know it's been overrated, but it deserves some recognition at least.[/hide]

[hide=Bioshock] I remember reading about this in a magazine. I was like..'Wow, this game'll be a failure for sure' as I flipped away from the article.

Around a year later, at an Airport in Louisville, KY, in a different magazine, I saw an amazing preview of the game. The Big Daddies were amazingly crafted, and just reading the article on different approaches to combat situations made me cringe at the thought of even seeing one of these beasts. Then, I saw the water. Never before in a game have I seen water that looks so amazing. And the story. After reading the story later on about how Rapture came to be and how humanity failed in a quest for perfection, I saw games in a completely different way. That was one of the best stories I had ever seen, period. DEFiNITELY deserving of a place on the GOTY list.[/hide]

If only SSBB came out this year, picking the GOTY would be simple.

But alas, it's between Bioshock and Galaxy for me.

Agreed. I want Halo 3 on the PC. Halo 1 on PC was awesome, Halo 2 however was just plain :uhh:

onceiroseik5.png

My choice is Bioshock. The only real problem I had with it was that it was too short.

  • 2 weeks later...

I'd say Super Mario Galaxy, just because it's almost tied for first for best game ever... It's not my personally favorite but it deserves the award ::'

My personal favorite is either Call of Duty or Halo 3
