Is America Full?

Featured Replies

Immigrating to America is a lot more difficult today than it was 50 years ago. Each week, there are stories of families being sent back to their home countries because they stayed in the country illegally. Teenagers and young adults who left with their parents when they were toddlers are forced to return to a foreign country that the law says is their home, but which they have no connection to.

Just today there was an article in nytimes about a family from Brazil who lived in America for 12 years, built a comfortable middle-class existence, but were forced to permanently return to Brazil this morning. Fifty years ago, this family could have simply went to one of numerous processing stations and entered the country legally. But today, even a tourist visa is difficult to obtain, and the consequences of overstaying are severe.

All the discussions regarding the illegal immigration of lower-class Mexicans and the illegal overstay of middle-class Brazilians eventually lead to one question: Is America Full? Have we really become out of space in a mere 50 years that we can no longer accomodate these people? What do you think?

I wouldn't say we're full. I'd more or less say they've broken the law and if they get caught, they get punished. If any of us break the law and get caught, we're punished. Why should we start giving them special privilages? There are legal ways to enter the US and those ways should be used.

Of course there are legal ways, but the number of people and the types of people allowed to use those legal ways have been greatly narrowed in the past 50 years. It all comes down to whether you think immigrants are causing a population problem, or whether a population problem even exists.

I wouldn't say the population is a problem. In my eyes it more or less what I stated above and the idea of our current unemployment rates and the families who -even if they'd rather not do it- could use those jobs -currently held by illegal immigrants- to feed their families.

haha send all the unemployed "legal citizens" to tend to lawns for a living or do the framework for construction or anyother part other than a management type job when it comes to construction. u cant and u wont because Americans are too damn stubborn.

There are plenty of those jobs available. Anyone can get an entry level job (fastfood/construction). One of the reasons America is still growing is because of these immigrants coming in and working for our population. As long as they keep working I don't have a problem with it.

But you wouldn't love doing it as a permanent day-job, at the low wages that people have come to expect from all the years of immigrant workers.

Honestly, if my plans for the future don't work out I figured I'll go into construction..

Nah, I'd say we're doing okay with punishing the illegal immigrants.

Sorry guys, sorry Ryan, it's been fun, but I got to finish my hw and get a decent night's sleep. Damn I'm awful. Night. :P

If China and India haven't ran out room then I think we're safe. (I know its very crowded there, but the countries can still hold more).

The whole thread was made out to be biased against america.... Ya, it's terrible that the family has to move back to Brazil, but they illegally came into this country in the first place, so isn't it only fair for them to pay the price?

The USA is nowhere near full.

The US has 40 times the land mass of the UK, yet only 5 times the population... by comparison, the US is pretty devoid of life lol. I'll conceed that there's large uninhabitable parts of the US, but even with this, it's still pretty sparcely populated.

If you wanna see crowded, check out India or Sri Lanka, or a number of other East Asia countries.

no way America is full its just that the population is more in the urban ciities and is not dispersed very well if it was spread out more evely throughout the U.S.

Try Japan. Same size as California with over a dozen times the population. That place is crowded as hell.

Why do you think those who come over illegally should get special treatment as if they was a citizen of the USA?

If you want to live in America that bad, go through proper channels. If you think its too narrow, then your not really trying too hard are you.

If your breaking the law, you suffer the consequences, end of story.

Mexicans try so hard that they choose the last resort of giving their life savings to shady smugglers so that they could crawl through sand and pack into the backs of delivery vans, all while under the risk of being imprisoned or shot if they are discovered. How much harder could they try?

TBH, if life is so bad in mexico, they should work on building a better mexico than saying "screw this, i'll go to America".

Not every single mexican that crosses the border illegally has good intentions and thats why you must go through proper channels.

That's like saying poor people in America should work on "building a better America" instead of focusing on something more relevant like finding jobs. Fixing Mexico is up to the rich, not the poor. The poor have much more urgent needs like feeding their family, so what's wrong with a little human decency by letting them work in this country?

Actually, all of them have good intentions. The criminals are not motivated to take the long and harsh journey to America. There is already enough lawlessness in Mexico for them to take advantage of. It would be pointless to travel to another country, where the language, culture, and laws are unfamiliar to you, to commit crimes.

You can't really try hard, a green card lottery is just about the only way left for normal people to enter the States.

Yeah, a system of luck where 1 people out of 60 get in, is being used. My brother lives in Europe and has tried to get in the US for the past 9 years without success, and he has university education, has been in student exchange programs in the US, etc...

Another way to speed up citizenship is applying for a resident status, then as soon as possible enlisting in the Army/Marines for active duty. People serving in the armed forces are nearly guaranteed a permanent citizenship.

The only problem is that by the time you're a citizen, you could be dead or missing a few limbs with that method.
