Marijuana, Is It Actually Bad?

weed is fine, good even, in the right hands. but i have friends who now spend their whole days going around town skanking people so they can have a little extra bud, which is just sad to see.

only problem is it's such a low trade, me and friends often get skanked because all the dealers we know have become obsessed with bud - even the ones who are our friends.

what are the prices like in america? i've had friends tell me its 15$ on the ounce but im not sure, if anyone wants to know, in the uk you can get an ounce for ÃÆââ¬Å¡Ãâã120 if you have friends in high places.

Weed would be better legalized, so people can experiment and deal with their problems without being prosecuted.

Oh yeah, dont you guys smoke it in blunts too? thats messed up, normaly takes me one blunt in the uk and im like this :XD: all night.

Marijuana is only illegal because the government cannot tax it.

What makes you think they can't tax marijuana?

In North America, there is a huge black market on marijuana. As soon as weed is decriminalized, the black market will begin to fall apart. People would rather buy quality weed from a trusted source (ie: a coffee shop) rather than a sketchy guy on the corner.

One study estimates that, in the US, $30 billion dollars in tax revenue is lost every year due to pot prohibition.[1] Even if only a small handful of marijuana users choose to buy their weed legally (ie: from coffee shops) then the government will still gain (economically).

Marijuana is really much less harmful than cigarettes or alcohol, but anything that burns creates Carbon Monoxide, and that is poisonous to human beings.

Many things in life are toxic. Hell, even caffeine is a "toxic drug" yet this does not mean we as a society should bash anyone who drinks coffee.

If the substance is used responsibly, a healthy body will recover from minor toxicity (eg: aspirin, caffeine, LSD, psilocybin and marijuana are all relatively low in toxicity).

I'm pretty sure this isn't against the rules, so I would like to start up a discussion about it.

I'm around the stuff a whole lot, I know people that do smoke it, however I've never touched the stuff, I have no idea why, but I just have always been told that its bad for you. However, studies have said that not a single recorded death has been caused due to Marijuana intake. It appears that Marijuana is less harmful to people than cigarettes or alcohol, which are both highly enjoyed by many people. I also see other "studies" that say its bad for you and one joint is equal to 25 cigarettes! whats up with these so called "studies" and why are they all different? Why is Marijuana Illegal if its said to be less harmful than legal things like cigarettes and smoke?

whats you're opinions on it? do you use it? do you hate it? why do you hate it? lets get a discussion going :)

P.S. if this is against the rules, please let me know.

Yes it is bad, because when ever someone smokes it they act like complete [bleep]s.

I want to ride that!!!

That's what she said yesterday :P

Whats a [bleep]? Cause people act very different when they're lean, just like getting drunk there are "high" highs and "low" highs lol

No, it normally doesn't cause death. It does much worse; it causes mental damage. I know this because my cousin did marijuana and now he's so messed up because of it. I don't really want to go into details because it's a touchy subject.

A few of the people at my school take marijuana, and it certainly hasn't helped them a bit. I always think that they appear much more stressed than anybody who doesn't take it. The problem with our society is that marijuana (everyone I know calls it weed) is accepted too much, and it has a two faced image, the worst part is that neither is completely right.

The pro-legalisation side is using the fallacy of the appeal to popularity; it is a flaw to conclude that marijuana is OK on the basis that a large number of people believe it is OK.

The anti-legalisation side isn't helping either, it is often utilising biased or inaccurate sources which seem to drown out any factual basis. Contradictory or false statistics are arriving left right and centre and we don't know what to believe.

Just one little question though, isn't the fact that marijuana is illegal in most countries proof that those governments do care about their citizen's health, and that they aren't working purely for monetary gain? If they did, they'd legalise it and tax it straight away.

1) The pro-legalization side is using far, far more credible and relevant arguments than that. I have not seen one serious credible advocate of legalization use 'a lot of people think it is OK' as an argument.

2) Yes, which is why it is so hard to get people to recognize the actual facts surrounding marijuana. One such fact is the related deaths argument. Marijuana has never directly caused a death from overdose, but there were 200 something related deaths in which marijuana may have been a factor, which anti-legalization advocates often try to use as an argument. But the truth is, there are so many thousands of people who smoke weed daily that 200 is an incredibly insignificant number, especially when contrasted to the proportion of alcohol and cigarette related deaths.

3) I dunno, maybe the government is reluctant to legalize it because that would mean admitting to the fact that its War on Drugs has been misguided and based on false facts? And as a counterargument, the government should ban alcohol in the interests of its citizens' health, as its a hard drug that causes severe bodily damage over time. Oh, wait, they haven't, because its making them tons of money, plus the one time the US government did was a complete fiasco.

Mental damage is worse than death? :|

At least it's possible to recover from substance-induced psychosis...

And what about alcohol? Cigarettes? Caffeine? All three of those drugs have proven to be harmful and addicting, yet they are legal in most parts of the world, and they are also enjoyed responsibly by many healthy individuals.

What about underage drinking laws? In countries like France a more relaxed attitude towards underage drinking has only shown to decrease drinking problems, yet much of North America is still very strict in that respect, which only ends up making matters worse.

What about marijuana for medical and industrial purposes? If the government wanted us to benefit, they would at least introduce marijuana for non-recreational uses.

Can you spot the difference between heroin and morphine?

http://www.druglibrary.org/gh/what_is_t ... ween_h.htm

Why is morphine legal, if the governments care so much about our health? Why are patients being injected with heroin-like substances at hospitals, when medical marijuana has often proved to be a safer alternative?

I think it's more a matter of societal and religious values rather than health values. Also, the general public is extremely ignorant/blind when it comes to the topic of drugs. They only know what media/government hype tells them, since almost nobody bothers to do their own research.

weed is the only drug thats kinda good for you,as they use it as a medicine,

and its enjoyable.

if you look at someone who smokes all of weed and someone who drinks alot youll see that weed doesnt ruin your life in anyway like alchol does.

Of course if you smoked too much and you're in a place where you're not comfortable you might get panic attacks, but that doesnt happen often.

It makes you enjoy the little things in life and helps you relax in stressful times like exams.

Of course harder drugs cocaine and heroine does controll your life and youll see fysical and mental breakdown on the druguser.

my opinion:legalize it,half of the world uses it anyways...

in The Netherlands it's legal and in Belgium you can smoke it in your own home when you're 18...

Marijuana seriously [bleep]s you up. There's no other way to explain it. There may not have been any deaths, but the health of the people who do smoke it is seriously hurt, which can lead to death.

Marijuana has been used to kill off pain though, so I can't seriously go any side of this subject. I'm only 13 anyway, so I don't know it entirely.

Marijuana seriously [bleep] you up. There's no other way to explain it.

Could you elaborate on that? :?:

While I agree that irresponsible use of marijuana (or any drug/activity) can "[bleep] you up", I have a hard time accepting that responsible and moderate use of the drug is as horrible as the media portrays it.

There may not have been any deaths but the health of the people who do smoke it is seriously hurt, which can lead to death.

I've said it a number of times. There are deaths, even if they are (a) indirect and (B) extremely rare.

Between 1997 and 2005 there were around 280 cannabis-related deaths in the U.S.[1] With over 25.4 million U.S. marijuana users in 2005 [2] and an average of 35 deaths per year, that's around 0.0001% dying indirectly from cannabis. According to the same study, you are over 8 times more likely to die from Viagra than from marijuana.

I strongly feel that most, if not all, of these marijuana-related deaths can be prevented through responsible use and legalization of the drug.

What kind of pictures are these? Red-eyed people laughing with friends?

If you don't know what you are talking about -- why are you making these blind claims?

Do some research. I dare you. :P

Well it's hard for one to tell because everybody's body reacts differently. FOr instance some people here are probobly social smokers, me on the other hand could die if I took a puff of that suff due to medical conditions. :uhh:

You're very right, everyone reacts differently.

I would say "responsible" smoking includes the user's current health conditions. In your case, it would be irresponsible to smoke marijuana because you are fully aware of your medical condition.

Of course, don't forget that there are safer ways to consume cannabis. For example, you can cook cannabis in foods to eliminate the risk of lung damage. Hash brownies, anyone? :)

Marijuana IS BAD for you. No, you most likely won't die from an over dose, but it screws with you. Badly.

Before both of my older sisters started smoking they were getting A's in school. Now they're both in their 20's still living at home, not going to school. One flunked out and barely has a job.

Marijuana screws with your mind. It brings you down as a person.

everything they say about weed is true, might be overblown, but it is true. Try it out of curiosity, but dont get into it. i know far too many have gone down the slippery slope of drugs and muggery.

Its not pot that makes the person travel down the slippery slope of failure, its all the persons choice, if it was addictive it would be a different story, but its not physically addictive.

It can become mentaly addictive if the person is weak minded enough, but then they shouldnt be doing anything like that anyway.

But let's face it, most people are weak. Most people aren't going to say "well I shouldn't do it because I might fail school." They're going to say "damn, that's fun! Where's more!?"

98% of the hype around Mary Jane is just that, hype. it's people that are scared to take a chance, Pot is in no way as harmful as Cigarrete, (spl) or many other legal drugs

EDIT: for all those of you saying that it messes you up and makes you do bad in school, I'm 18 I'm in my third year at college and I'm making A's-B's across the board and I've been smoking since I was 15.

finally back in the game! send me a message, all my old friends quit

I laughed so hard I pooped my thong.

(1) Hey? I think you've got this backwards. Your typical person will believe it's bad purely because it's illegal. Most people don't study themselves to see if it's bad and just go with media connotations with druggies, dropouts, and dealers.

(2) I doubt it. Basic politics - if you do anything that is controversial, no matter how beneficial it may be, your political career is on the line. Politicians generally care more about their votes. It's as plain as day to me.

By the way on your cousin, sorry to hear about that. It's a testament not to be a chronic user or smoke if you're predisposed to mental problems. It's the exact same with not being a chronic drinker or drinking if you have liver problems.

That's right. It's all about responsibility. It can only bring someone down as a person if they choose to let it become their lifestyle.

Just because you smoke pot doesn't mean you're going to lose your job or get bad grades. But, if you put smoking before everything else in your life, then it becomes a problem.

Every drug has its uses. Marijuana can be used as a pain killer in certain cases. In moderation, most drugs and poisons can be used as miraculous cures. Its when they are used incorrectly that they become dangerous.
