I've noticed you've been quite vacant on Lightning clan chat recently... If you're that concerned about it, see your doctor. If it's a personal matter, they'll refer you to a counsillor. If it is something more serious like depression, they'll have a specialist check it out. I think we're going to go into another lapse of depression threads again, no offence to the topic maker. As someone said, go see a doctor if youre really conserned. Or talk to someone about it. But remember one fact about depression whatever you do, it's always temporary and no matter how dark it might feel, it will pass. \ Reality is hundreds of times more beautiful and more interesting than delusions. Futurama Posted January 15, 2008 Share Posted January 15, 2008 It happens. I felt horrible last night for no reason, but the best thing to do is not to dwell on it and cheer yourself back up. It's to do with a lot - being bored after enjoying yourself, hormones, allsorts. By the sounds of things though, it seems like you might be unhappy at school, and if you are you should tell someone or sort it out yourself if possible. You might not know what's bothering you but if its to do with school im sure someone could help you figure it out. If not, brush it off and get over it, happens to nearly everyone in teenage years. The only people who tell you that you can't do something are those who have already given up on their own dreams so feel the need to discourage yours. Hormones. The quiet, dark, cold period after the excitement of Christmas and new year. You're worried about something in school like a class/teacher/friend/enemy/report/test. One thing that fuels more "depression" is people simply having the wrong expectations. People aren't happy all the time. Life goes up and down. A couple of people I know have got over long depressive periods in their lives (years long, not a couple of weeks). What they said was that they expected some kind of fanfare where their life would suddenly change and they'd be happy all the time, but it doesn't work that way. I think it's just that time of the year, post christmas blues, miserable weather, summers still a while off. Find something new and interesting, life can get flat if you've got nothing new going on, and going to the gym always makes me feel better. I had bad depression last year and the beginning of this, but thank god I think it's near left my system and I take the good with the bad. Keep your head up man, it's not going to last. Everyone cries too. It just happens, especially at tennagerhood. Unless it just gets worse, and you all know what defines worse, then there might be something more seriously wrong. I have my own views on 'depression', probably because the fact that I've never met anyone who I think has had proper depression or never experienced it. The past month has seen two of my close friends been signed off work for 2 weeks, each time, because of depression. What gets me is that they get basically a fully paid holiday, while we are working our [wagon] off, for most times a worst paycheck at the end of the week. With so many trees in the city you could see the spring coming each day until a night of warm wind would bring it suddenly in one morning. Sometimes the heavy cold rains would beat it back so that it would seem that it would never come and that you were losing a season out of your life. But you knew that there would always be the spring as you knew the river would flow again after it was frozen. When the cold rains kept on and killed the spring, it was as though a young person had died for no reason. In most civilized countries, it is classed as a disease/disability though (which it frankly is). But you'd need a doctor to confirm it, you can't just say "I can't be bothered to work today, I must be depressed".. Life is not "happy" or "sad", it's what you make of it (or what your circumstances make it). Nobody is happy all of the time, everyone goes through problems, some people have bigger ones, some smaller. Just because you have a lot of trouble, doesn't mean your life is horrible. It needs more than "Oh, I'm feeling a little down, gimme me some antidepressents Mr. GP pl0x?" You're more than welcome to have whatever views you like, however internationally Depression is regarded a serious medical condition that leads to disability. You'd be surprised at the percentage of people who suffer from some sort of depression, and even more shocked at the number of cases which go undiagnosed because it has that exact stigma you talk of Phil. Personally, if they've only been feeling 'depressed' for a couple of weeks, I cannot see how they've actually been diagnosed as depressed, since that doesn't meet the conditions set out by the leading bodies. As Goddess says, wait longer than a few weeks, and see if you still feel the same way. Another thing make sure of is that this isn't 'grief' as opposed to depression. The last thing a truly depressed person needs is added stress. On your side though, if a person can't handle full time work, they should do something to help themselves and cut it back to part time. The only time I would agree with a depressed person working full time hours and getting 2 weeks paid off, is if they're trying their hardest to support a family and they're the main source of household income. It's a fulltime job in itself, keeping yourself together with depression and being the main source of income to support your family. It's not easy to chug along in life when your serotonin levels make your hormones light fireworks. Speaking from first and second hand experience, I've been there myself. With my bipolar, because I rapid cycle I can't prepare myself for super highs or super lows. When I was working full time, I'd all of a sudden feel it happening and would have to go home early or have the day off, two at the most. I knew people were getting annoyed at me, it wasn't easy. I never got paid for it either and there were some weeks I really needed the money to support myself but I couldn't be at work with my health. There were times I even had to borrow money to keep my head above water. Sometimes I just really wanted someone to understand for once or help me out with the work load so maybe I didn't have to go home. Maybe you could be that person, helping the other guys out at work. You just don't know how much it could make a difference :D The only people who tell you that you can't do something are those who have already given up on their own dreams so feel the need to discourage yours. But I don't know if I'll fully understand what they are going through because I never get any lows or highs like you describe, if you know what I mean, so it's difficult to support them fully. I can't say that I'll be able to fully understand where they're coming from either but I could try, as I'm usually only at rock bottom for a fraction of time, which I'm thankful for. Rapid cycling means I'll bounce right up like a ball, or hit the ground like a ton of cement. I don't really get to control what happens only how I deal with it. I've had to deal with a few people with depression and all I have to say is it's amazing what can occur when you have a bit of faith in someone. The only people who tell you that you can't do something are those who have already given up on their own dreams so feel the need to discourage yours. You really feel that there's no hope in life, thoughts of self harm and suicide are usually abundant. You feel apathetic and just want to lie in bed/laze around. Irritability is usually present; often to an extent that it affects family relations/friendships. You want to cry, but often can't due to the lack of physical energy to do so. You really feel 'dead inside'. If you're particularly concerned, book an appointment with a psychiatrist or mental health specialist. They will be able to help you out a fair amount; depending on how much you open up to them. That's the hardest part - you're talking about your life to a complete stranger and it WILL make you feel uneasy at first. There's way too much stigma around depression and mental health problems. Don't be embarrassed about it. Take it easy. Edit: I've been diagnosed with bipolar type I (with rapid cycling) and schizophrenia. If anyone wants someone to talk to, feel free to talk to me. The DSM-IV states that Bipolar and Schizophrenia have different diagnostic credentials and that Bipolar only gives off Schizophrenia like symptoms. Are you sure you didn't mean Schizo-affective disorder? That contains elements of both Schizophrenia and Bipolar. It is believed Schizophrenic symptoms occur when there is an overlap in chromosome 13 and 22, significantly increasing by almost 3-fold when a member of the family has experienced psychotic Bipolar symptoms. It wouldn't surprise me that they may find Paranoid Schizophrenia existing in extreme Bipolar hypomania, in the near future however.
