destro3979
For the last couple months i have been working at McDonald's... at first it was ok, the people were nice and wanted to help, i didn't have many hours but i figured it was cause i was new... but now... the people are just plain annoying, the managers yell at you for... everything... the workers don't really like me. not sure why seeing i almost never talk or do anything to them. and of course the pay sucks... i make $5.50 last year i worked at a dog track and made $8.00, i would of worked there but i didn't like working with a bunch of druggies who did everything they could to make my life miserably there. so... what would your suggestions be for quitting? written note? in person? phone call? also im going to want a job to replace this... so does anyone have any good suggestion im a 17 going to be 18 in November and live in the US... if that makes any difference now i have to go or be late for work.... Thanks sorry for a small wall of text New Sig Coming soon!
fgfuyfyuiuy0
Working in a grocery store for 2 years; I've found the Managers appreciate being told in person. Also, it provides you the opportunity to ask for a letter of recommendation as long as they like you. Our policy is that they give you 2 weeks, so that you have time to find a job and so that they have time to find a replacement. I've seen many people quit and not all of them worked out. Notes and phonecalls don't cut it. You need to speak with them in person. It shows respect and shows that you care. Plus, a letter of recommendation won't look so bad when you go in for another job. anonymous1234
first of all, shame on you for working for $5.50 an hour, that's just pitiful (and below the minimum wage i think. As for quitting, I would tell them before you actually quit like fgf said.

InkofDeath
Don't mind getting up early, or sorting through garbage on non-garbage days, and other odd things to do with garbage, and since your 18, I'm assuming Grade 12 education? Or 11? Anyways Garbage Man. It's a fun job if you don't mind sore muscles the first couple of weeks, and the hanging on the back of the truck never gets old. Though competition in Canada here is Grade 12 Education with 80s+ in Academics, no idea how it would be where you are. But it is indeed fun and pays well. ididnotlol
Find something you like doing, and do it, there is no point in life if you cant enjoy it. For example, I like animals, so i might work at a zoo when im old enough to get a job. Do something thats fun, working in a themepark would be good, on your breaks go on a ride if you are allowed. 8-) I love this sig.
pryomancer
I had a friend who worked McDonald's. When he quit, he walked up behind his manager and slapped him round the back of his bald head. I suggest, however, not to do that. Tell him in person you're quitting. You should have to provide 2 weeks notice. Don't just walk out and not come back, as it will look bad when you get your next job.
monkeyboo2
I work at a fast food place (Subway) and I kinda like it. Only my first 2 weeks thoug so i guess i could get bored eventually. Anyway... To the point. Find a new job before starting. And don't just walk out. Give them notice so they give you a good reference. It improves chances for future jobs. 8-) Yeah...Some people just go out of their way to ruin other peoples fun.Sounds like Jagex to me...

Stephen9o3
To be honest, you can't really expect getting a dream job in high school. Sure, some get lucky and find an awesome job but most don't. I work at a grocery store, I mainly do cash but also do carts (which also includes all the janitorial work at our smaller store, such as garbages, cleaning washrooms, etc.). It's not an awesome job but I just put up with it and try my best to enjoy it where I can. I think working at McDonald's where I live would be fun, but that's because I live in a small town and the majority of employees at McDonald's here go to my school. I think a pretty easy and laidback job would just be stocking shelves at a hardware store or something. Most hardware stores aren't that busy around here, but then again, it could be different where you live. Combat FTL

En_fuego
I made the mistake of quitting my job earlier in the year thinking I would get one for the summer. My old job paid $9.70/hr plus tips, but it was in a casino and I couldn't stand the second hand smoke or the customers (but that comes with most jobs). Anyway I quit back in January before I went back to college for my 2nd semester last year. March and April roll around and I start looking for jobs, and nothing was to be found that I was interested in, yes there were plenty of fast food and typical Wal-Mart jobs, in fact Wal-Mart offered to pay me $8.25/hr as a cashier but I really didn't want to work there. I ended up working at my old place of work at a grocery store in the meat department for only $6.50/hr, a huge pay decrease and I only worked 24 hours a week. But I didn't give up looking. May and June go by and I really didn't find anything, but I put my application and resume out to many places. I figured I would just work at the grocery store for the rest of the summer until college starts up again in late August. Well, that changed last week when I got a call from a place I sent my resume into back in early May. It was a promotional products distributor, silkscreening and printmaking on pretty much any promotional object you can think of, piggy banks, hand bags, key chains, pens, all that sort of junk. Apparently one of their production plants in Cedar Rapids, Iowa flooded and they were way behind on orders, so they offered me a job to come help for the rest of the summer until I go back to school in a month. Needless to say I'm pretty stoked about this, its crazy hours and crazy money because they are behind on these orders. I have some pretty funky hours, 7PM to 7AM, 12 hours shifts, and I get pretty tired and sore from the lifting and standing but I'm not going to complain because the pay is great, $9.99/hr + I get anywhere from 8-32 hours extra of overtime which pay $15.00/hr. I'm just happy I can finally make some money this summer before I go back to school Anyway, to get to my point, before you quit make sure (if you have to) you find a different job, make sure it is something you can stand doing, working at Wal-Mart was something I didn't really want to do at all, whiny annoying customers and their kids. So I took that pay decrease, but I guess it ended up working out after all, but I was very lucky.

My last day of work will be July 26, 2008. I made the decision to resign, not because I'm unhappy with the opportunities you've presented. I have enjoyed working with you and the rest of the McDonald's crew. Thank you for the opportunity to work for such an outstanding organization. Kriegsmier
Agreed try and line something up before you quit. And i'd quit in person, but thats just my personality. I'm not sure about places that hire at 17, but what about something like Home Depot? They start out at like $8/hr i believe or close to it. When you're 18 look into UPS, something like a package handling position (UPS Store maybe because i know they don't have a hub up there) while you go to school. They start at $8.50/hr. I worked at UPS as a package handler at one of their Air Hubs on the air ramp loading and unloading planes. Worked 3 days a week, i started at 8.50/hr (was up to 10/hr.....50 cent raise every 3 months) and got time and a half pay almost every day. Was a good job. Definently not a desk job, but i hate being lazy. UPS, Home Depot, Lowes.....any of the big corporate deals have pretty high starting pay, higher then minimum wage in most cases. What about something like a sporting goods store. Any mom and pop places there? The mom and pop shops usually give pretty competitive wages here. I've know a lot of small business that are willing to pay $10/hr to get a couple good workers. What do you wanna do with computers? Go somewhere and try and get your foot in the door. Architechtual firms need people to run AutoCAD, graphical design agencies are always, computer repair shops and PC specialty shops. Hey its work experience and contacts. Hard to say, not sure how small your town is and what ya got up there. If you love what you do you'll never work a day in your life. ;)

IGoddessI
Depends whether you're part time, full time or casual. My advice would be to find a new job first and write in your resume under "availability" that you're currently employed and will need 7 days before you switch companies. (2 weeks if you're full time and add 1 extra week to that per 2 years service) and you need to give 0 notice if you're casual (well you do need to give an hours notice before your shift) but it's always nice to leave on good terms in case you need them as references later or to leave the doors open. The last thing you want is to be hired by a job that is 10 times worse than the one you left and if you ring McDonald's back up and say you made a mistake, you'll more than likely get your job back. It's good to practice this too before you raise a family. When you get another job (please remind them you need to give notice to your current place of employment in the interview) you then give those 7 days notice in writing and give it to your manager. Write your letter something similar to this and put it in to an envelop stating "To: The Manager." make sure you give it to the correct person. (todays current date) To whom it may concern, I "insert first name and last name" am giving (7 days(or 14 days depending on your work status) notice prior to resignation. (add the that days date - to the last day you will be commencing work). I have enjoyed working for your company and thank you for the skills you have provided me with. Warm regards (print your first name and last name) (your signature here) You can then happily enjoy your new place of employment after those 7 days and don't leave on bad terms. So filled out, say my name was billy bob and I'm putting in my resignation today and my position is permanent part time... Another company has offered me a job and they understand I will need my 7 days notice before I commence work with them, it would look something like this. 11.07.08 To whom it may concern, I Billy Bob, am giving 7 days notice prior to resignation 11.07.08 - 18.07.08. I have enjoyed working for your company and thank you for the skills you have provided me with. Warm regards Billy Bob (Billy Bob's signature here) Good luck and please keep in mind not to keep switching jobs purely for the fact that you don't get along with other people. Make an effort, suck it up because at the end of the day you're there to get the job done and you're there to do it as quickly as possible while making an income. Your job isn't to be best buddies with chumpo over there because rule number 1, there are no friends in the work place. If you do meet someone you get along with, work is work and play is play. The object of having a good work history is when you're over the age of 18, you're no longer considered a junior and less companies are going to want to hire you unless you stand out from the crowd with an outstanding work history/ethic. Companies don't want to look at your resume with about 10 jobs on there, all never lasting longer than a few months. They're going to take one look, go "unreliable" and throw it in the bin. Stay with companies as long as you can or you're slamming the door in your face before you turn 18. You don't want to be working at McDonald's when you're that age anyway so start thinking about career opportunities. One more thing when your future employer asks you why you left McDonald's please for the love of life, don't say "because I didn't get along with anybody." At least say something like "I thought it was time to start a career." or "I thought I learned as much as I could there so decided to move on to better things." The only people who tell you that you can't do something are those who have already given up on their own dreams so feel the need to discourage yours.
