Meh, gardening's for people with patience and sanity. the only plant I've ever grown in the past decade was a bean plant for 5th grade science class. and it died in a week anyway.

Nice story and pictures to go with it. The method of removing weeds in our garden is to just take the disk-all that we use for breaking land through it. Although, that would only be an option for a large garden. I should post pictures of mine, or of some of the crops that we've planted over acres and acres of land. Anyways, nice pictures. It's always great to see someone else who is a bit of a horticulturist. Organic food is to die for. :

any hares/rabbits been around your allotments yet? When my dad had an allotment there was a rabbit around, man that was the funniest thing my dad chasing a rabbit into someone else allotment and just leaving it there.

Lol sounds funny, we don't have hares/rabbits, there is a family of foxes living in the area, so I guess that would explain it. We do have badgers, they can sometimes dig stuff up, but for the good they do its nice to see/hear them.

Well. I think I've reached the number of "Irl Farming Level lol?" jokes I can handle before ripping my eyes out, so I'm just gonna say my thing and leave, though I'll keep an eye on your Flickr thing. Everything looks awesome, and especially tasty. The only things I've grown were cherry tomatoes, which basically failed because cats have a fondness of breaking anything that looks vaguely fun, and cacti, which the cats soon learnt to leave alone. :lol: The cactus project went well, but I couldn't hope to cultivate such a garden as yours. Too small of a yard/soiled area.

I don't have any pictures of mine, but I found one that looks pretty much the same, mine's around 3/4 as big as it. There's also some others, of varying heights and stuff, but this one's the biggest.

torti hun, try sweet peas, they taste pretty good when you cook them lightly. i like to just set a slght pot of water to a light boil and add a pad off butter. they turn out really nice. (i live in south dakota, so usaully when it gets around 90 degrees fer. they start to die off, so water them heavily like strawberries, and theyll put out better and longer)

Man, reading this thread makes me want to figure out how to get everything my family grows to NOT die.

 

It took us one month to kill every herb we tried to grow, plus a eucalyptus tree and some flowers. And our tomatoe plant (at least, I think it was a tomato plant) didn't even sprout.

Well I'll share what I've learned so far.

 

 

 

But to put down everything would take up a huge amount of space.

 

 

 

I guess the basics are, make sure your plot has adequate drainage, ie its not under a foot of water after a downpour of rain or similar.

 

 

 

Also the best way to do things is "little and often". Its far easier to do a couple hours digging/weeding/planting over a week as opposed to attempting to get it all done in one go.

 

 

 

Its always a good idea to listen to more experienced plot holders, they can tell you about any specific problem that may affect your growing. Always buy your seeds from reputable suppliers.

 

 

 

Buying cheap seed from a non-gardening specialist is not always the way to go, especially if you have spent a lot of time, money and personal effort into conditioning the soil for the crop you intend to grow.

 

There's nothing more disheartening than waiting possibly months for a failed crop.

 

 

 

Checking your soil's pH balance can be a good idea, especially if there is no other plot/garden nearby for a visual comparison of what is feasible to grow.

 

Most crop's (in my experience) prefer a slightly alkaline soil. pH kits are quick and easy to use and usually inexpensive.

 

 

 

Don't over-water your plants! One of the easiest ways of killing off any potential crop is giving them too much water.

 

 

 

Get good tools. This cannot be over emphasised, buying cheap tools is a recipe for disaster which in certain circumstances can lead to you being injured.

 

 

 

Take a chair and a book. After digging and working for a few hours, your entitled to a break. Rome wasn't built in a day.
