@Vieva - that projects starting to look good. Looking at that makes me motivated to get back on that java 3d game with no external libraries that I abandoned ages ago

Other than that I did 2 different coding challenges today. Hopefully that means interviews next week but we will see.

I dont feel either one had the most elegant solutions. I used Java8 for both of them but I dont know how companies feel about using streams for everything, so I did a lot of stuff with Java7 style. Also the 2nd coding challenge was timed and i ran out of time on one of the questions and the answer I had when I finished wasn't exactly perfect.

We'll see how it goes.

All in all I'm surprised how rusty I've gotten with Java after a year of almost exclusively doing python/javascript

Got into graduate school with a funding hookup so looks like college will be continuing for some time yet.

Is it so much to ask for comments at the top of methods explaining what they do? Is that an excessive expectation? Because it seems like no one does that, and I don't understand why, because the moment I learned to do that, my code became 100% more readable and I immediately understood the benefit...

I'm so tired of asking what code does at work

So I added directional lights (e.g., sun) and ambient lights (e.g., light inside a building).

8WD8xty.gif

There's three buffers in my "GBuffer" (geometry buffer) that stores the scene:

Color (red, green, blue, alpha, 8 bits per component):
YUPsHfq.png

Positions (x, y, z, in world-space, half-float [16 bits] per component):
WOBHwYN.png

Normals (x, y, z, in normal-space, half-float per component):
RQMlu98.png

(Since normals go from -1 to 1, negative values appeear black. Similarly, world positions are much bigger or smaller, so values exceeding 1 are clamped to 1 when visualized. E.g., a 4 x 4 cube would go from 0 (no color) to 1 (max color) visually, so 3/4 of the cube would be bright whatever and 1/4th would be a gradient.)

The lights are composited additively in another buffer:

sX849qh.png

The final image is simply each pixel from color (from the GBuffer) and light are multiplied together, resulting in the lighting being applied.

Pretty nifty. Means I can have lots of lights. :)

So I took this guy:

OE7aPO3.png

And made him into a mesh:

And added a walk animation:

Was working on a tool to convert FBX to a custom model format. It mostly works, just exporting the skeleton is a bit wonky.

Tomorrow I take the driving test again. I am confident I'll pass this time, but still nervous lol.

Remember when this website had April Fool's themes each year? Good times.

“I had a feeling we weren’t coming back from this fight when it began.”

“Do you have any regrets?”

“I don’t. It seems surprising, I know, but I wouldn’t change a thing. This is how it was meant to be.”

“Huh, you never really notice how lovely the day is until you realize you’ll never see it again.”

“Mmmhmm.”

$300? Damn. And that's with bare minimum coverage?

Progressive's website is being a turd right now, but I can tell you that my share of my family's car insurance is only like $60, but if I were to switch to my car insurance through my work I'd be in the $110-150 range. Granted, we have fairly different states and histories but I've got like 4 points on my license soooooo

Jesus, this is going to come off as some sort of humble brag type thing, but I thought it was bad when my insurance went up to $80/month this year.

Wow. Just... Wow.
Is that full coverage or only your liability?

Also, turns out my mum and my grandma both have late stages of cancer. I'm half the globe away. And broke.

I think I was at 280/month first year, 190 second, 130 third, 100 fourth (though I increased my coverage slightly). But at least in Canada all these plans are yearly so the rates only change once per year

@saq: that sucks dude. How much does it cost to fly back to Estonia from NZ?
