A twist on obesity in Britain

Featured Replies

im in 100% support of this idea.

Force kids to run 3 miles everyday in gym class, problem solved =D

that's also a good idea. im not a very athletic person (im not fat, i just don't like/not great at sports very much), however if they put that in here over in Australia i wouldn't reject it a bit.

in primary school at the start of each and every school day we had a 30 minute class called 'Huff and Puff'. Apparently my school was one of the few still continuing the program, most schools had stopped using it. It was basically teaching us to exercise, and it was compulsory.

It was one of the most beneficial things i ever had in primary school (except from English and Maths class of course) which i discovered as soon as i entered secondary school (year 7). The lack of that 30 minutes of exercise a day which i took for granted quickly turned me into the most unfit state i had ever been in. I don't recon i have ever been as fit as back in primary school.

I didn't think so then, but i now think that was one of the most fun and important things i done in primary school. i would start doing it tomorrow if they brought it back but into secondary school.

This sounds like a decent idea one thing is I only think it is a good idea if it is strongly limited, giving parents a few warnings allowing them a whole year to start getting signifigant progress, and only taking the worst kids. I dont mean only take a kid if they way 500 pounds but we need to make sure we arent taking away anyone thats a little chubby.

That is the best idea. Probably more than 3 miles though.

My carbon footprint is bigger than yours...and you know what they say about big feet.

These are the times that try mens souls...
good, because as a British guy, i have noticed not only are Brits horribly fat, but also ugly. And stupid.

Man, i hate my country.

this applies to the majority of humans. don;t worry if you're not attracted to them.

So what happens after they go into this "program"? They come out, and all is well? No. They come out, and they're screwed up mentally because they've been pulled away from their parents in order to lose weight.

Why dont they just introduce a compulsory exercise program for obese children..? Or maybe make it so they have to visit their doctor more often with their parents in order to assess the situation and plan on losing the weight. I agree with the other guy, if they just had 3 mile runs everyday at school then there wouldn't be this problem in the first place.

Hey.

Speaking as an english man, they are dealing with the problem all wrong...... now I am not exactly skinny..... far from it..... but I am not at a size that it viewed as "fat"..... just a bit overweight.

The problem is governments have lost their ability to use common sense. The go into schools and take away the chips from lunch.... the burgers.... and all the vending machines so that we are forced to have healthier food at school (although the way they are cooked.....I am sure even salad is bad for you!)

This does not teach a child how to eat healthiy...... as soon as they leave the schools you see lines of people at the till of the supermarkets and sweet shops...... they have not been told how to eat properly.... only they have had what they want held back from them.

Education is the key. Alot of schools are drastically cutting back on how much time it taken teaching how to cook, and this is sad. We now are having the first generations with people who simply have no idea. Teach the child how to cook a good tasty meal, and it will stay with them for life..... don't...... and they will eat badly.

The further we get away from World war 2 rations, the less people depend on good food.... It's largely the fault of governments that was are in the situation we are in now.

As much as a failure those parents are for having obese (not that there's a fine line being overweight and plain obese) kids, taking them away isn't going to solve anything other than [bleep] up the family even more.

If only parents learned to say "NO" to their kids, obesity wouldn't be a problem. Someone post the pic of that fat-Michelin-like kid eating at McDs. [bleep]ing disgusting.

I agree, but I think a combination of both is in order. Not only limiting the calories etc., but giving more priority to education about food as well.

Heh, completely unrelated to obesity, but a running joke in Britain and New Zealand is listing your religion on official forms as "jedi".. It's a good portion of the pop. especially in NZ, some 1.5% (more than buddhists)

We wouldn't have a weight epidemic if the media would not throw out [cabbage] diet trends and rubbish on how to eat properly. Examples:

Eat 5-7 portions of fruit a day!

Err. Fruit is a simple carb, full of sugar. Loads of fruit causes insulin sensitivity and will raise carb sensitivity and calories being stored as fat stores.

Eat a 'balanced' diet!

No, please don't. Eat 40% carbs (low GI), eat 40% lean protein and 20% good fats (unsaturates, omegas etc).

Today's fad diet! Starving yourself!

Starving yourself only makes your body cling on for dear life to your fat stores because the body is wondering when it will get its next meal.

Thing is, even if kids were taken in by the government for help on how to eat healthily, the top 'nutritionists' and personal trainers will have them on some crap routine and diet that it'll hardly be worth it.

Good to see someone who knows what they're talking about.. I programmed diets before to a few people, if you want to also build muscle mass while working out, I'd suggest even upping the ratio of carb/protein to more like 30:60 with the rest being fat.

Keep the calorie count slightly above the daily suggested ratio+excercise included, with that diet+proper workout, all weight you're going to be gaining is mass.

I support taking the kids away because this gives the parents an incentive to start saying no. The kids are fat because the parents don't like refusing them and they don't get enough exercise. If they have a choice of getting their kid to a decent weight or having them taken away, the parents might put some effort in to stop their kid over-eating.

Thanks Venomai for this super sig and Kwimbob for the awesome avatar!

Obesity isn't just a 'personal issue' though, it's life threatening especially if your kid already has it at under age 10. So by allowing the kid to continue his/her unhealthy habits, they're being bad parents. I somewhat agree with taking away the worst cases temporarily so they can have a healthy life later on.

If it stops the Kid from being Obese then hell yes take him away from the family, but only if he is placed into foster care / adoption, putting him into a government run institution school I would not support.

Obesity is a pretty serious condition as it leads to many life threatening diseases, in a way it's almost the new AIDS, it wont kill you but it certainly will help other diseases kill you.

On a side note, as I the only one to find the follow quote funny?

Ambulances are being re-equipped with extra-wide and strengthened stretchers and winches. Fire services are called in to winch obese people out of dangerous buildings.

I believe I am :(

But ministers do not want the word "obese" to be used in the letters after research showed people find it "highly offensive".

What kind of [developmentally delayed] had to do research on whether a fancy word for "you're a fat bastard" would be found offensive

This problem with fat kids (Yes, I said 'fat', because that is what they are. I'm not talking about people with hereditary diseases/whatever, I'm talking about people with no self control.) could all be solved if gym classes continued to be a requirement in every year of education, rather than till the end of elementary. Of course, most of this problem wouldn't exist if parents had the sense to 'just say no', and people in their teens and 20s had the sense to eat with moderation... Geez, is it really that hard to not have that third slice of pizza or that energy drink? Or to take a long walk every day?

There is no meaning or truth in life but that which we create for ourselves.
