Google announced today that it will be releasing a new browser. When? Tomorrow. The browser will be open-source and packed with many features - some new, some borrowed - such as:

This all looks very promising. I especially like the concept of multithreading out tabs -- it really does eliminate a lot of the muck [on paper] when dealing with too much memory. When it becomes available, I'll have to give it a whirl.

Looks interesting, especially with the tab processes. However, it's going to be hard to match all of the useful addons Firefox has.

Is it closed beta or open beta? If its open, I will definately be giving it a try.

This looks like a very interesting and welcomed browser. Each tab is a separate process and that means it's almost impossible to get memory leaks like all current browsers still have (Oh yes they do!). Also the new Javascript engine sounds very interesting. plus the fact that Google have the Chrome Bot to trawl the web and test all them billions of web pages which will mean that Google Chrome should be less buggy than all previous browsers.

 

 

 

I truly think this is a big deal. Why? How many people use Google? Just about everyone! You don't say search the internet anymore, you usually say Google for it, the term "to Google" has now become a verb, and I get the feeling this browser will become very popular as we already trust Google to give us a safe, fast and happy web experience. I for one will definitely support it as I think it's going to redefine a lot of web standards with a step in the right direction of bringing them all together. And as a web developer that's gotta be good.

 

 

 

Now here's something to think about, almost since browsers existed there's been the Mozilla vs IE war, and suddenly from Google we are getting a totally independent browser, if (And that is if) this browser becomes popular, and eventually becomes the bog standard, then IE and Mozilla may have to follow suit. The war may finally be over which will be a happy day for everyone. I for one am sick to the teeth of the lack of web standards and having to write reams of code simply to get web pages to function and look correct in all the different browsers. I wish to god they could pull their finger out and simply agree on a single standard. It drives me crazy that CSS, Frames, Tables, Javascript (Need I go on) all have slightly different standards on different platforms, AAAAGH!

 

 

 

I hope Google is my savior :)

Well, Jonsson, the new Google browser isn't entirely independent, as Mozilla and Google have a close relationship. For example, 3 of FF3's Lead Designers were also a part of the team that designed Chrome. In addition to that, Google also has a partnership with Mozilla until 2011. Because of that, I think that Chrome and Firefox will be very similar, and in the near feature, they will release similar updates.

Might "look nice", but it appears to lack a few critical interface features that propeller-heads like myself use. Google has epic-failed, and will therefore not find me using their browser. :notalk:

yes I know, I typed that very quickly and maybe I didn't state my views clearly. What I was trying to say is that it's highly likely that Chrome may be the start of the end of the browser standard war. It may finally "set" the standard!

While I'll be giving Chrome a big test, I don't think that it'll usurp Firefox as my defacto browser. I'm willing to believe that many other browsers (notably Opera and Firefox) will improve on the innovation that Google has set forward, but as far as a total replacement, no dice. ;)

Trying it out now, I have to say it's pretty damn fast for a beta. the UI isn't bad, I'm going to find if I can change the colors though to match my desktop.

Just downloaded it and I have to say I am very impressed. It is very fast and it imports all your Firefox settings on setup, which is a bonus. :thumbsup:

 

 

 

Great work Google!! I don't know if I'm jumping the gun a bit, but I think this is definitely the browser benchmark from now on. :o

I just downloaded, Its quick, its smooth, but I feel it lacks a few features.

 

 

 

Hopefully this is only because it's still beta, but so far I have found no customization features at all, I cant play runescape in it, or find a method of installing the plugin. At first I must admit I was leaning onto the idea (what with Mozilla & Google being partners) that this might be made as a light-weight version of Firefox so to speak.

This gives me hope, and I very much look forward to seeing what come out next. I'm sure they will have to implement some kind of plugin directory for us, so we can run such things as Runescape etc, and I am very interested to see what else they included. I'm sure the next step of tools to add would be cross-browser based ones, such as F11 giving you a full-screen aspect etc.

 

 

 

One thing I did love however, was the View Page Source/Inspect Element feature. I mean, that is one handy feature, managed incredibly well. Viewing the page source gives you a nice easy to read bunch of script. And viewing the element feature gives you a wealth of easy to locate information. And, it allows you to live edit content (Only visible on your computer - don't get ahead of your self there kids : )

 

But I find that a neat feature, one which seemed to branch from Opera.

 

- For example you can right click and inspect the element in Runescape, and change the number of players currently online to trick your friends or what have you.

 

 

 

On the right hand side of the inspect element tool, you can see the CSS info.

 

 

 

So far this is starting to look like a very promising browser, I urge you to give it a try, if not now, then later when they perhaps take it out of BETA. I'm sure it will be very much "worthy" then.

V8 engine is for javascript, not Java. Java is completely independent of javascript.

 

 

 

I tried this out and it seems reliable and fast. It should be more standards compliant than FF3 because it's using the Webkit engine. Acid3 test is running really slow so I can't test this out atm.

 

 

 

I didn't like that the interface isn't too customizable. A big turn off is no addons, but this will change when it's more than a day old.

 

 

 

Is there an about:config section in chrome like there is in Firefox?
