Mr_Adam
In many places/schools, books have been banned, for many reasons - think of the Nazi book burning, as a major example. In my school district, we seem to support the reading of banned books, as expression of freedom of speech(?). [hide=Books banned across the United States in schools include]The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain- for many reasons. Some people don't like how Jim (a black slave) becomes a father figure for Huck (a white boy). Some people don't like the repeated use of the "N" word. Animal Farm by George Orwell- Banned for its Governmental views (very closely relating to Joseph Stalin). Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling- Some people are just anti-magic [/hide] Basically, in the end, Majority of the community rules- if we don't like its idea, you don't read it. What do you think about the prohibition of reading books as school curriculum? NOTE: Book banning from schools does not make it illegal to read it... it may be confiscated or something, but you still have your rights as a citizen to read it (in America, at least). I don't mean that the book is illegal in the US (free speech and all that). NOTE2: If you post a book titile, please say whoever wrote it.
baalboy5
TBH My class just got done reading Huck. Also I'm reading George's 1984, I think that was banned in some places too. Don't you know the first rule of MMO's? Anyone higher level than you has no life, and anyone lower than you is a noob. People in OT eat glass when they are bored. hellbellz
Animal Farm is a great book, wtf. I think censorship on books is so unnecessary, if you don't like the book, don't read the damn book. Problem solved.

Problem solved. Not really the case, someone could just made a really offensive book bashing all cultures and it wouldn't be banned? You can't say 'dont read the book' because most banned books are banned because they would've been used for educational purposes. Don't you know the first rule of MMO's? urbestfreind
My 9th grade English teacher only chose from books that were banned to let us read as group books. Actually, most of my teachers have done this lol. I think it's wrong to ban books, especially for stupid reasons. I'll agree that "How to smoke crack in 3 easy steps" should be banned, but Huckleberry Finn shouldn't be banned. That's a great book, and a great movie. Animal Farm (actually, all George Orwell books I've read) are probably banned so the government can protect itself. So much in 1984 is relevant to today's issues, it's not even funny. *Note to all: go read that book, it's a brilliant piece of literature. It's not like someone is going to stop me from reading the books, but still, there are some entries on the banned books list that make no sense at all. warri0r45
I don't agree with banning books. Knowledge should be free for anyone. Banning something like Harry Potter or Animal Farm is rediculous. If people don't like a book, then they shouldn't read it.

warren211
I've heard of obscure communities who think Harry Potter's magic is the spawn of the devil, but... the classics to be banned? That's robbing a community of a great work of literature. I just finished reading Of Mice and Men. Amazing story. Steinbeck knows how to add twists at the perfect times. Probably the shortest novel to ever leave a lasting impression on me. In English class this year we'll be reading To Kill a Mockingbird and the Lord of the Flies, both of which sound like excellent books. To ban them because they go against certain ideals? Ridiculous. In Of Mice and Men, there is only one black character and one female character in the entire book (unless you count Aunt Clara who we don't actually meet). And the other characters toss around the n-word for the black character as though it was the norm. If I'm not mistaken, that was the norm. Slightly derogatory, but not as bad as it is today. Who knows? In 40 or 50 years maybe books containing the word "gay" will be banned too because some historic event will make the word too derogatory to use. People get offended way too easily. Classic literature gives us a glimpse of life before us. What was a common idea back then like the mistreatment of blacks and women is now forbidden in today's society. I wouldn't be surprised of there was some Ameriacn writer who wrote aspiring literature who is never even heard of because his ideals were different and he's now kept a secret. [hide=]tip it would pay me $500.00 to keep my clothes ON :( :lol:But then again, you fail to realize that 101% of the people in this universe hate you. Yes, humankind's hatred against you goes beyond mathematical possibilities. That tears it. I'm starting an animal rebellion using my mind powers. Those PETA bastards will never see it coming until the porcupines are half way up their asses.[/hide]Apparently a lot of people say it. Randox
just an interesting tidbit. Animal Farm is part of the school curiculum where I live (in Canada). Harry Potter. I had a friend whos mother was against him reading Harry Potter (this was years ago btw), yet she let him read the entire His Dark Materials series. For those who don't recognise the series, its The Golden Compas, The Subtle Knife, and the Amber Spyglass. The books would be classifyed as anti-christ. Needless to say I really like that series (and no I am not athiest/agnostic) and his mother was completly clueless. Now when I think about it, maybe his mom was right about him reading harry potter. I am fairly certain 'avada kadavera' does not mean 'burnt corpse' and I don't know where that bull [cabbage] came from.
Lenin64
Banning something like Huckleberry Finn or To Kill a Mockingbird is just ridiculous. People need to see these things. Nom
Here's a list of historically banned books from around the world: http://title.forbiddenlibrary.com/ I also got a short list as a handout in English class last year. No clue what happened to it. Anyway, banning books is ridiculous and rather amusing. I like the quote from that website about the banning of the Canterbury Tales. "Chaucer would be amused." Mr_Adam
Animal Farm by George Orwell- Banned for its Governmental views (very closely relating to Joseph Stalin). Please, someone tell me what was wrong with Stalin. Maybe I worded it bad (I'm not exactly good with Soviet History), But Stalin was leader when George Orwell wrote Animal Farm, I think, and the book relates closely to how communism works with propaganda and such (I'm not a communist genius either). And some people do go to the extremity of seeing magic as the work of the devil. People just overreact =\ And when I said Harry Potter was banned, but not TLotR or inheritance, it was just a popular example :) I should read 1984, we have it, but I haven't read it - even though my dad (who's not really a book guy) is desperately trying to force me to. It's about the government (Big Brother?) that watches over everything the people do right? I think they secretly do that now :?
Mr_Adam
I am fairly certain 'avada kadavera' does not mean 'burnt corpse' and I don't know where that bull [cabbage] came from. During an audience interview at the Edinburgh Book Festival (15 April 2004) Rowling said: "Does anyone know where avada kedavra came from? It is an ancient spell in Aramaic, and it is the original of abracadabra, which means 'let the thing be destroyed.' Originally, it was used to cure illness and the 'thing' was the illness, but I decided to make it the 'thing' as in the person standing in front of me. I take a lot of liberties with things like that. I twist them round and make them mine. That's what Avada Kedavra means :P
Dizzle229
Is it just me, or is the government trying to bubble wrap the country? Like there are no bad guys, our way of life is perfect, blah blah blah bull. Banning books is stupid, especially great pieces of literature like Huckleberry Finn. And don't we have laws against censorship? Today my social studies teacher showed pictures of a damn lynching in the south in the 1940's. And Huckleberry Finn gets banned because they said a mean word? Get back here so I can rub your butt.
