After venturing my way into PMG : General Guides, I was checking out guides. In several of the guides I was horrified by the comments with "u" and "dat" and lack of care for spelling. I know that English isn't everyone's native language, but this is a forum site, not a cell phone.

 

 

 

Apparently there is something called "php Spell" for phpBB2. I have seen several guides on adapting it for phpBB3. Would it be possible for the Admin to look into it?

 

 

 

There are internet explorer add-ons/Firefox and software like word you can use, but not everyone has access to those. With a simple/(not simple?) forum add-on, everyone would have the oppurtunity to have some sort of spelling checker.

I was just going to say something about an SQL table like that slowing down the server a lot, but then I remembered that we have 160,000 registered users, around the same amount of words as are in common use in the English language (If that) that would be necessary.

 

I haven't really looked at it, I'll see if there's a mod although I doubt it.

Sure you could turn it off, but keep in mind this whole thing would have to nearly be coded from scratch as there don't seem to be any spellchecker mods for phpBB3. And I don't think the Crew or any of TIF's other coders would have time for that.

There are few phpBB2 ones with a guide to convert to phpBB3 I saw. Cowman, I think there is a way to turn it off by changing it in the user's settings area.

It's basically pointless in my oppinion. Tip.It has ran for quite a few years without SpellCheckers and we've done great. Some people encourage Bad Grammar, some don't.

Sure, a few people would use it who don't have browser spellcheck, but it wouldn't help everybody and its just one more mod to slap on this over'MOD'ed forum, which makes it more time consuming to install new styles and whatnot.

Actually, TIF's installation of phpBB3 has only one visible mod I can think of, which is nothing compared to the 5 or so mods we had on phpBB2. And the mod we do have is a simple one that is easily upgradeable. phpBB3 replaced a lot of the mods we have.

 

 

 

Oh wait, we have some manually-created custom BBcode, but that isn't so much.

As was said, I think people that use words like 'dat' and 'u' know it's not the correct way of spelling it, it's just them being lazy/cool/whatever.

People know full well on how to spell those words. They just don't want to for some form or another (like Phil said above). Also, I wonder how this would effect the Firefox built in spell checker.

Oh yes, I agree with you. Even though English is not my native language, I alway try to type properly. I might have grammar mistakes, but I seldomly use 'u', 'no', 'dere', etc...

 

 

 

Maybe they should use the censor system for this like:

 

When a U is standed alone, it will turn into a 'You'?

I'd love an spellchecker built into tipit. People like me may be a minority, but there are a few of us. I write alot, but i write incredibly quickly, so i'll often end up needing to re-read huge paragraphs for spelling mistakes. As i dont use IE or firefox or a browser with a spellchecker, i know it would be welcomed by me. at least, do it for me

I don't want to get into browser wars, but do you really have a reason not to use FF or Chrome? I can think that a valid reason would be not having control over what's on the computer and what isn't but if you can I suggest you switch.

If one wants to spell correctly, there are plenty of possibilities. One is, indeed, the built in spelling checker in decent browers like FF. Also, you could first typ out your post in Word/Writer, get your spelling checked and then c/p your post in the form field on the forum.

 

 

 

Too bad most people are lazy. And you can't force one to stop being lazy, sadly.

Its not a fact that people are too lazy to type into word, and use that spellchecker, its just that the effort would outwiegh the point, posting 20+ posts in a few hours, hardly seems worth opening up wqord every time, when it would be failry easy (looking at above posts) to builda spellchecker into the forum.

This thread presumes something which hasn't already been established: Why should we all type in perfect English prose with immaculate spelling?

Impractical. People post in such idiotical methods for their own enjoyment, or to annoy others. They are the IE users, or the ones who disregard spellcheckers. They'll eventually learn to spell somewhat more decently before this feature could even be thought about being seriously added by the admins.

 

 

 

Still it wouldn't encourage better spelling anyways. I'd prefer Tip.It would spend time on any of the numerous suggestions that have more meaning, and much more purpose than this.

If anything, it would give certain people a reason to jump on any spelling mistake ever made in every post. Keep in mind that the majority of the forum users (and mods ;) ) don't have English as their first language, and learn to be a bit tolerant instead. Those who want to use bad spelling for the hell of it, won't stop because of a spellchecker. "This isn't school, dis iz de intrawebs". The users - especially those who have reading/writing issues of different kinds - shouldn't feel pressured to type everything correctly to avoid attacks from others in their spare time.

I wasn't advocating IE, it doesn't have a spellchecker anyway, and in my opinion that's no reason to use AOL but that's your choice.

 

 

 

The only thing I can see this improving is those who either a) Don't have access to a browser due to computer power or B) Don't own the computer (As with me and posting from school) and can't install it.

Besides, people who talk using words like "dat" are [developmentally delayed]ed anyway.

If people are already talking in slang and using in proper grammar, then I doubt that they will change. The don't care about their Grammar as it isn't school, or the like, so they can type however they like.

 

Plus, some browsers have a Spell Check in built (Google Chrome, Firefox), so it would interfere, unless you had an option to turn it off in the UCP.

You misunderstood me. I meant that people with Spell Checkers in built, like Firefox, can turn it off, so they don't have it mucking it up and having two Spell Checkers. I can see where you are coming from with the approach that they will turn it off, but I don't think that many people will do that.
