True origin of the Jagex name and logo

Older folks may remember this, but while the Jagex name officially stands for Java Gaming Experts, it was originally created by Andrew Gower as an acronym of "Java Audio+Graphics Extension":

...Which by late '99 became:

...And is now:

Kinda like how the acronym of DVD changed from Digital Video Disc to Versitile.

Neat to see the logo, and the whole company, morph.

I used to love the screen in RSC that said Runescape was updated. It was really nicely done. Now we have pictures like that all over :D

The name DVD came from "digital visual disc", but the official specification doesn't define it as meaning anything. The official press release from 1995 said it meant "digital versatile disc". In 1999 they said DVD just meant DVD, but on their website they repeat that it means "digital versatile disc".

Yeah. Andrew Gower originally used the Jagex name as a sole trader, and Jagex the company was originally called Meaujo (492) Limited.

I assume they bought a pre-registered off the shelf company and changed the name to Jagex.

I'd assumed that it was a company that Constant Tedder set up, but it has never been explained. I am unfamiliar with the practice you refer to.

Its a service accountants and some specialised companies offer sometimes, basically they register Private limited companies with companies house (the registrar) and sell them onto people wishing to set up a private limited company for a fee to save them the hassle of the paper work.

I still remember playing their first games, especially that game where you're a helicopter/plane and you are going through all these rocks and slopes you have to dodge while shooting enemies.

Kind of odd, I also started a classic account back then but got frustrated and quit before completing the tutorial. Back then, players had to wait in line to talk to the NPCs, so as you can imagine I was stuck behind 20 people, and when I tried to click on him, it always said "It isn't your turn yet." A few months later they fixed that and I eventually got past the tutorial. I remember having fun with the 'follow' option and following this random woman around with a wizard's hat asking her for money.

By popular demand, this signature is back- however I currently do not have a blog up at the moment and if I did I wouldn't update it. Sorry, the sig links to nowhere :( .

Doesn't that describe a majority of most early PC, turbografix, Sega, and NES games?
If the CORPORAL beast is this hard, imagine how hard a GENERAL or COLONEL beast would be. a corporal is not even an admirable rank in armies that use that ranking system.

Yeah, it is a pking minigame, so any arguments anybody makes will probably be biased.

The best way this will end :Everybody just says,"I'm not arguing with you anymore, goodbye."

The worst way this will end: I don't really know, psychological warfare? Worldwide thermonuclear war? Pie eating contest?

Started with Digital Visual Disc, then officially got named Versitile, now people think it's Video when it's still Versitile.
