I've heard about 4 or 5 suicides on a live feed the past few weeks. Is it becoming something popular or the new way to go out? To have a little last 10 minutes of fame, and be the center of attention, before they go do whatever to kill themselves?

 

 

 

Not to sound mean or ignorant, but this is what will be the downfall of the internet when the equivalent of MADD is formed, but based on the internet. -.-

On a more serious note, though, it might be because they can record a suicide video, rather than a note, and they might figure that after they say their goodbyes, they might as well leave the camera running. If it is for fame, though, it's a better alternative than shooting up a school/mall then killing themselves.

If you would take everyone on the internet who say they were going to commit suicide seriously, you wouldn't have anything else to do. Anonymity on the internet helps everyone living the life they want to live. Don't you dare saying something in real life? Say it on the internet! Want to verbally abuse someone without any consequences? Do it on the internet! Want to be another gender? Pretend to have one on the internet! I think this actually helps a lot of people in their real life, when they have the ability to get all their frustration out on the internet. That's really weird that you posted that, espically at this time, because (If any of you live in Colorado, you might know about this) but I heard there have been like 6 suicide cases since Sunday. One was even at my school, (Castle View High School) This girl named Kea, I didn't really know her though.

Not only did a young boy commit suicide, which is horrible enough, but he did it over webcam. Why would you ever want to broadcast it for the entire world? Also, why would anybody want to even watch such a thing? Disgusting.

 

as stated in the article he probably had his webcam going as a cry for help, and to make someone intervene. sadly no one did.

i was tipped off about this shortly after it happened, so i went on the body building forum, looked around at all the threads about it, saw the video of the cops busting in, laughed a bit at the ridiculousness of it, kept looking at the threads, thought it was all kinda funny. didn't read the article you quoted about it, but the threads i was looking at said they watched the webcam for 8 hours, and you could see him breathing at first, then you saw the breathing stop. why they didn't call someone right away i don't know, but apparently they waited a few hours to call the cops about it. made for an interesting few hours on the internet.

anyway, yeah, it was all over /b/ after it happened, it was the bodybuilding forum users that were on the webcam and chat, although some of them sure did sound like /b/ users, so it may have been on /b/ during also. it was originally all on the bodybuilding forums though.

There are better ways to get attention and help than the internet and you know it. Kid's fault imo. Should know better than to ask for help from people he doesnt know personally and irl.

That's why he did it on a webcam. Very, very few people commit suicide by going out into the woods and shooting themselves or hanging themselves by a tree branch. Aye, his bipolar played a hand. But so did his thirst for attention. He may have killed himself either way, but why he used this medium was purely a ploy for attention.

Indeed. Only thing is, I noticed that some people called for authorities to help, so I guess some people didn't want anyone to die, this is the rather sad part about the internet.

I'd help him anyway. The guy's clearly in trouble. Whether he's serious about killing himself is neither here nor there. It just adds to the gravity of the situation.

A) He was bipolar. During an episode your mind doesn't exactly think straight and defeatist attitudes towards the world around you are a common symptom of that. I'd also be interested to know if the pills he was taking to control his bipolar condition would have had any impact on his mentality at the time;

 

B) Maybe the reason he was on the Internet is because he felt the "real world" was completely closed to him, ergo, there was no other place to appeal for help?

 

 

 

This story runs much deeper than "a looney kid kills himself on the 'Net".

Seeing some reactions to this I think it's sad how desensitized society has become to suicide (and death in general).

The people who egged him on are complete [bleep]s. Although a lot of them probably thought he was joking and wasn't going to do it, someone obviously has problems if they even joke about it so it's still wrong. I'm not sure on the full story but I wonder why the police weren't called earlier? Also I read that he threatened to commit suicide once before then on the same website, why weren't they called that time?
