Scores killed in Mumbai rampage

They are really getting smart, and security should be better, there's so much people that are on the streets that can use a job like guarding places; it's a pity they do not realize this.

Every human life is equal, whether a wealthy westerner, an impoverished African or a sweatshop working Asain, all are equal and all deserve to be free from terrorist attacks, no matter where they're from.

It's sad really how they all "deserve" but never get. I hear people talking about human rights, but in some parts of the world, they just don't exist.

Hello friend, Senajitkaushik was epic, Good luck bro.

Without commenting on the mindless bloodbath, I've come to literally hate the wording british & american media uses in it's stories.

Human lives aren't "scores" or "masses", jesus christ. Then complaining about people being desensitized to world events... How'd the reporter like if his/her family members were being classified as a "score"? Reeks of a person who never got as much as a papercut personally

Why does that bother you so much? Sorry, I can't understand why it does.

As for the story, it sounds pretty horrible. Imagine being in the middle of that scene. I'd be scared as hell.

There's a lot of sensationalism the media uses but I agree, I don't see anything wrong with this particular wording. Just a different way of saying "many".

India is calling this "their 9/11".

Many people said that Pakistan wouldn't attack India because of MAD, but I thought it was pretty obvious that the most unstable region in the world right now when it comes to terrorism is not Iran (where Bush and McCain were focused), but Pakistan. Even if it wasn't the Pakistani government, they still refuse to do any policing of the terrorist problem they have in their mountains.

Their government is openly defiant to the US, it's very unstable, and they have nuclear weapons. I really hope India doesn't lash out or anything....

I'm interested in hearing world leaders' responses to see where this is going to go :|

As much as a catastrophe this is, I think it will cause enough backlash for India to up the ante against terrorism.

The only reason people care about this so much is because the targets were wealthy Brits and Americans. 90 people? More than that die every 10 seconds from starvation.

Sure, this is a tragic event, but yet again, the media are blowing it way out of proportion. How big do you think the news would be if it had been peasant farmers that were shot?

*Bets that India's tourism goes down 95%*

Only 90 people dead? Yeah whats another 90 eh? A lifes a life. Over 100 people have died now and i bet the families of those people aren't blowing it off saying, Eh it's one more kid dead, we have another 2 right?

If 90 peasant Indian farmers were shot, it would be over already and the armed forces would have finished it off quickly because you can hardly take hosages in a mud hutt ;). Most likely be mentioned in the news over here but not much about Because it doesn't really concers americans/canadians. But would still be all over India.

Let your yellow mellow.

This should be almost viewed like 9/11, an atrocity to be used as a learning experience so it doesn't happen again.

Here's the thing though, it's not like this was the first time it has happened in Mumbai in recent times. Only 2 years ago there were co-ordinated train bombings there that killed over 200 people. Do westerners have to die before terrorism is taken seriously?

Unfortunately I've never heard of that event and that goes back to Western media only informing us of Western targeted acts of terrorism, we heard of the Madrid train bombings but not the Mumbai train bombings, why? Ones west and ones east, the media doesn't care for the east, the same with a lot of ignorant Westerns. Yet if this was to happen in New York, it would be broadcasted worldwide. Shows how sad, profit driven and uncaring this world is becoming,

They can't really call it their 9/10, just a mass terrorist attack.

Why not? I agree, generalising this by looking for some comparison to 9/11 seems daft, especially since Islamist extremism has been going on in India looong before America started caring about terrorism.

The aim of each was still the same though. Both attacks seem to have been conducted by Islamist extremist groups, although it's not clear this latest attack had anything to do with al-Qaeda. Both attacks were on not necessarily Americans, but international businessmen. Both of the attacks would not have required a deep level of training to conduct - it sounds shallow, but there's rumours of there being dozens of gunmen who opened rapid fire in a packed railway station and they only took 130 lives despite laying siege to four or five other targets?

The situation is certainly very grave. The operation is still underway by the National Security Guards and above 40 hourse since it begin. I am pretty tensed for my relatives and friends are back there and I can't do much more than being glued to the telivision with horror-struck eyes.

Over 130 people dead and around 400 injured..I hope it echoes a far more stronger sentiment then a statistical value.

Peace shall prevail.

Seems like this terrorist attack will have quite an impact on the tourism industry, hotels seeing a dip in business along with the airline industry. Lets just hope the operation ends quickly & the remaining hostages are escorted out safely.

OT: This will not be their version of 9-11, as it seems like in my head that they are trying to make the government think that that's that. Instead, it was only step 1 of their plot to kill hundred of thousands of people.

Do you think they have a nuke or something?

Meh, possible.

The attackers were almost kids/teens by age and were armed with AK's, hand grenades & ammunition. Not sure if that was a joke, but given not even the worst criminals or terrorist organisations in the world have had access to nuclear weapons, that's not even remotely possible despite how coordinated they were.

I was responding to this post...

The only way I thought he could be serious was if he thought they had nuclear weapons. Or, he could just be ignorant.

And believe it or not, with a team of engineers and access to former Eastern Bloc intelligence agencies (as well as oodles of money), you can build a primitive nuke with relative ease in around two years. It isn't particularly difficult a weapon to make - at least, one that simply blows up bigtime isn't. A more complex, modern weapon would be - but terrorists don't much care if their weapons are the best or not, I would assume.

People have not found terrorists' hiding places correct? They may very well have a nuclear weapons or building one for a future attack. There is actually no way of actually knowing, is there?

You're right it's possible, as I said, just really unlikely.

Very few terrorist organizations that are blatantly obvious and well-known are that organized, though.

It's ridiculously easy for intelligence agencies to find out the movements and whereabouts of weaponized plutonium, uranium sales, etc... Even if criminals and strict hierarchies are involved. There are people literally living off of tipping agencies about big deals or caches of arms to support their poor families (even $10,000 is a fortune in most impoverished countries).

The only reason why you can't just "locate" people who may for example be loyal to Osama bin Laden despite a $25m reward (which is solely designed to turn his own people into informants) is because they don't trust americans and western governments. Low ranking members of his organisation see it as just another plot, that they will never pay the money if they turn on him.

Plus as you likely know, organisations like al-Qaeda don't really have an actual "organisation". They work through separated cells who are excluded from communication with each other. The cell masters merely recieve ideological and financial support from the 'higher ups' like Ayman al-Zawahiri and bin Laden. They don't take direct orders or necessarily even cooperate.

Heads are beginning to roll now but that is to be expected. The Indian Home Minister has resigned & the Finance Minister has taken his place. Seems like there'll be more resignations to follow.

Judging by how the attacks were carried out, the terrorists looked well trained & knew the layout of the hotels. Obviously they intended to cause more casualties but weren't able to. They even had plans to go a posh area & hold VIPs hostage. That might have been interesting. Conflicting reports are emerging regarding the number of terrorists who carried out these attacks. They were even planning to blow up the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), but it's difficult to carry that out since it needs to done in broad daylight to cause maximum damage. There's so many reports pouring in about the attacks, it's hard to keep up with all that's being said. :-k

Atleast they managed to get hold of one terrorist, which is proving to be crucial in getting out all the information of their operation. Some revelations by the arrested terrorist. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1090546/I-told-kill-breath-Captured-terrorists-account-Mumbai-massacre-reveals-plan-kill-5-000.html

The attacks have clearly highlighted the need for a more proactive approach rather than reactive.

Why are terrorists attacking British/US citizens? I've read that they think we are too free. Christ, instead of pulling crap like this, why can't they try and develop for themselves? Make some alliances?

Quite interesting, actually. Wikipedia, who have been credited by some broadcasters for their coverage of the incident (some describe the commentary as almost real time), have compiled a list of all the deaths and nationalities. Those mourning over the deaths of just British and American casualties need to hang their heads in shame, and learn up the meaning of "context".

NOTE: The article is being considered for deletion. I've linked to that particular version of the article as is now.

Didn't think this would be possible. I think its time for India to actually do something against these attacks like get better security.

Yeah a lot of Indians seem to be frustrated with the government cause they haven't seriously stepped up security measures even after the terrorist attacks there in recent years.

Yeah. I have a friend in india. THey dragged a bleeding guy into their house (he was ok, just cut himself on glass)

But in any case did you see the battles. Indian commandos in black taking on terrorists? It looked really scary and quite gory, and although the deaths are a small thing overall it sure is scary that these people were killed purposefully and in a violent manner.
