jemathonical
First of all, to all Australians here - HAPPY AUSTRALIA DAY. Keep it true blue you blokes. Now, we had our Australia Day Awards the other day and the Australian of the year was an Aboriginal by the name of Mick Dodson for his reconcilliation efforts. Now he probably deserved it even though I never heard of him, so good on him. But he pissed me off when the first thing he done was proposed to change the date of Australia Day. The Yawuru man says many Aborigines see the landing of the First Fleet in 1788 "as the day on which our world came crashing down" So he reckons we should change Australia Day. Seriously mate, it's not going to happen. You weren't even alive back then, infact, no one is alive from 1788. Do you see us descendents of convicts pissing and moaning to the Queen expecting an apology for sending our forefathers halfway across the world to jail over here? The European convicts started Australia, government and rules. How is your world crashing down? The date is not going to get changed. Loving Kevin Rudd - "To our indigenous leaders, and those who call for a change to our national day, let me say a simple, respectful but straightforward no," But Mick Dodson still thinks he is going to get our National Day's date changed. And good luck to him with that. But I know for sure that it's not going to get changed. Happy Australia Day - 26th January. ^Sir Jem 05-The Bunny Drinking Blog?^ Click it! Zierro
I'm glad no one refers to me as a bloke. Anyways, I always thought the idea of changing dates was dumb. A big thing about specific dates is that they are traditional and an alteration would ruin that.

i_love_burritos
Jem, you might want to down down the color commentary. But as I too, live in Australia, understand what you are saying. The onus has been on the aboriginal people for sometime now, and they just have to own up to it. Simply, asking for new legislation and government programs is not going to cut it.In regards to the Australia Day date change, I would not like to see it changed.I acknowledge that that is the date which Aboriginal's regard as the begginging of their land rights, stolen children and genocide, struggle. However 200 years of tradition cannot simply be changed on a whim
warri0r45
I don't think it should be changed. 26th Jan marks a very specific event in our history. Sure, it may not have been a great day for the indigenous people of Australia at the time, but changing the date would loose the meaning of the event - the arrival of the first fleet in 1788. If I had the mindset of some of these Aboriginal people calling for the date to be changed, I might think of the 26th of January and lament at the fact that a large part of our population descended from the rejects of Britain. But, i don't do that because, for better or worse, it's all relevant history and it should be remembered. I think most people use the day as a chance to see how far we've come since 1788 and celebrate what we've become, not lament over the past. We're already making efforts to promote reconciliation between European and indigenous Australians, and I don't think changing this historic date would help. remoteman
Yeah I think it's ridiculous, to be brutally honest with you, I'm over the whole plight of the Aborigines thing. Yes, I agree that horrible things were done to them etc etc, but I'm just sick of the whinging. My dad made an interesting point about it today, he said that it was unfortunate, but in the end if the English hadn't colonised then the French or the Dutch would have, and we'd be singing their national anthems today and we'd have a totally different cultural outlook. Point being that there is absolutely no way in the world that the harmony in which the Indigenous people lived in would have continued for any great length of time (a decade max). I think it is just naive to blame the 'Europeans' for ruining a way of life that was going to have to change drastically regardless. Yes, it is a tragic loss of culture and identity, but it was 221 years ago and can we move on? Changing the date of our National holiday is doing nothing practical to improve the condition of these people, there was an article in the Herald this morning talking exactly about that, if people like Mr. Dodson devoted more time to coming up with practical and rational plans to help better the situation of the Indigenous people instead of worrying about the symbolic things the world would be a better place. Or Australia would at least. "A disbelief in magic can force some poor souls into believing in authority and business"

IGoddessI
I thought they wanted equality. How is changing an already set in stone, historic date created by the white man's laws going to create equality? You can't whinge and moan about following Australian Law one day and then ask them to change it in their favor the next. Thanks for being blunt, Rudd. As far as I'm aware people I know don't celebrate Australia day to celebrate the landing of the fleet, they celebrate because they "Call Australia home!". And as far as I'm concerned, that is equality for the aboriginals of Australia. We are all sharing one country and calling it our home. We should all be proud of our country, regardless of our skin colour and use the 26th to celebrate because "I am, you are, we are Australian." The only people who tell you that you can't do something are those who have already given up on their own dreams so feel the need to discourage yours. Sly_Wizard
Didn't he say the aborigines view it as "Invasion Day"? Haha lol. I actually like that term. And it probably has some amount of truth to it, too.
