Today I got a lot of unique shapes and I couldn't help but upload almost all of them :wall: I took 111 shots, limited it down to 44 for iPhoto, then limited that down to 8 for deviantArt and limited THAT down to 5 for Tip.it.

The photos are yellow food colouring in a bowl of water with red food colouring being dropped into it (which is why the droplets are red). Towards the end the water turned orange though, which is why the last one is all orange.

Wow, can't believe no one has replied to these, they are great.

I like them all, perhaps the first one the most. My only criticism would be the color, which even though it seems you planned it to be that way, because of it, they seem unnatural. To however you interpret this could be a good or bad thing. As for me, I would almost like them to be more blue, like the water on your other splash photos. Nevertheless the still are amazing photos. What lens/set-up did you use? (Sorry if this was asked in the previous thread )

EDIT: After looking at them again, another thing that might be interesting for the future is if they were shot at a different angle. Right now the centering seems a tad bit boring and repetitive.

Thanks for commenting dave :)

Blue does seem more natural but I think it gets boring after a while. I had never experimented with multiple colours before and I wanted to try it out.

I use a Canon 450D (XSi) DSLR camera and a 100mm 2.8 Macro lens.

You're right that more angles would be cool to experiment with. Any ideas? Other than just making them off-center, I don't really know what else I can do. I guess it would be cool to get 'under' the splash more, but that would require me to make some major modifications to my set up, which I don't feel like doing just yet

Thanks for commenting :)

I should really get a macro lens, all I have is a 18-70 and a 70-210mm for my D70. Don't get me wrong, I like the colors, they just seemed sort of unnatural (not really the best word here, but I couldn't think of a better one). As for the angle, I don't have anything off the back, it's not like you could shoot from above, as with flowers, it would look boring. Perhaps maybe don't fill the frame as much or not have the splash in the middle, I don't really know. Perhaps you could also zoom in even more, like how flower shots where you can't see the whole flower look great.

Zooming in more is hard :( I end up missing a ton of shots. They would only work well for pictures like #2, maybe #3, and #5. But then I'd miss every picture like #4 because they'd get cut off :(

If you can't afford a macro lens, you could always get a set of Kenko extension tubes. They won't give you the image quality or quite the same magnification as a macro lens, but they're a few hundred dollars cheaper :)

I have too first decide how much I'm into photography, as right now I'm quite busy with school and some other issues.

If zooming in doesn't work, perhaps zooming out more, or perhaps using a longer exposure; I love how silky smooth, rivers and water looks over a long period of time. (Even though it wasn't what you were going for with splash photography)

How did you coordinate the splash making and photography?

If I used a longer exposure, it would just be a big blur and the drop probably wouldn't be noticeable at all. Rivers and waters do look well with a long exposure, but photographing drops and splashes is really for high speed photography.

I have my camera on a tripod connected to a remote. I have a cooking baster hanging over a bowl of water and I fill up the cooking baster and let it drip while I use the remote to snap pictures.

I haven't done any macro work, mostly landscapes and such. Speaking of which, I need to get a cable release, but I don't think they make one for the D70. It gets annoying to use the timer.

Anyways, I can't think of any other ideas, but once again, what you have looks great.

Maybe manipulate the depth of the water? See if it produces any different results on the spash.

Nice idea, thank you :) I could also try varying the height of the cooking baster.

The colours looks good, though unnatural. try some more black-blueys and dark greens?

They all are good, but this:

is just divine. Very simple, and not much going on, but I love it.

Thank you! That's my favourite too

Ahh, this makes me want to invest in a macro lens :P

What's your light source? Do you have a light box? I was thinking about making one but I didn't know how to go about it.

Anyway, great skills, brilliant images though looking through your gallery, it seems a little repetitive. Try different compositions and stuff, ooh, try take it when it's about to drop from whatever you're dropping it from. Maybe you'll have to make the water a bit thicker to get a longer droplet.. Hmm, I think I'm going to test this out myself.

You keep spamming my deviantART inbox with these

They all look great, once again. What lens do you use for these?

Sorry it's because I can never pick my favourite lol :ohnoes: I use the Canon 100mm 2.8 Macro lens.

Amazing!!

I should be borrowing a macro lens next week so i can try some similar sort of stuff :)

...oh, and hope you had a good Wednesday Tripsis hehe

Awesome!! I'd love to see your results! And thank you!!

Love them all, especially #2.

Keep up the good work. ;)

Thanks a lot :)

Macro lenses are really fantastic. Not only because of their ability to reach 1:1 magnification, but also because they're incredibly sharp.

I do have a light box. I have two 100W equivalent light bulbs on either side plus a Canon 430EX speedlight.

Yeah I've heard that milk is great to work with too because it's much thicker. I'll try it out, thank you :)
