Pixel 'Craze'

Recommended Posts

4,5 maybe 6 months ago, pixel sigs came onto the Runescape scene [Tip It scene] and took signature enthusiasts aback.

Only a few specialist pixelers made the grade for 'good enough to buy' (in my eyes anyway) and these artists were raking in the rs cash so to speak.

The other artists who designed abstracts and so forth were confident that the pixel fad would soon outgrow itself and fade into obscurity. However as time grew and the pixel 'fad' continued to grow bigger 'abstracteers' (as i have now named them :P ) gradually became more nervous and eventually started trying pixel signatures themselves. Many succeeded in become established pixelers, but many failed.

Discuss: Why hasn't the 'pixel craze' gone?

Is this craze producing too many poor pixel work within this media community through greed of pixel noobs trying to become as respected and presumably wealthy as the top pixelers such as The Jeppoz and Misterxman?

Even though it "seems" we are still in this...craze, it looks like we have ballanced out.

- More and more posts of other artwork, such as abstracts, and now a bit more flash animations are coming into the scene.

The reason that pixel art is such a craze is because you don't need a 600$ program to be good at it. Open up ms paint, draw, and wallah.

Now, I know we get a lot of these half-assed crappy works, but remember the abstract craze? yup, a bunch of trendwhore backgrounds and filter piles.

The landscape craze (I think was here for a bit) Yeah, a lot of just first thing they saw in terragen renders.

Every craze we have had has a lot of poor atempts with their mind on becoming rich. But for every crappy filter pile or poorly drawn image we have seen, it seems each craze realy brings out the best in some people. If it wasn't for this "pixel craze" than I don't think we would have seen some of jeppoz's and misterx's pixel work, ever. Many others as well.

we like them.

some of them anyway...

Dude, it's been more than Six months(One of my first posts was in a topic questioning the pixel craze about a year ago). I joined in September 2004 and noticed the Pixel Signatures, so I made myself one.

Like said before, they're easy to make. And if you have some drawing skill, you can make some cash. I used to do sprite comics and other sprite-related things, so it came naturally to me.

(It's also a nice medium to work with. ;P)

pixel noobs? i dont see a problem with people starting to try to make pixels, especially because i am one of them. all the good pixel artists arent going to be around forever, and it seems as if right now many of the good ones are starting to stop making sigs. many people are starting to want pixel sigs, however the only good artists capable of making good quality ones are princessa, terley, and godslayer (and godslayer seems like hes stopping doing most requests). there are many other great artists, but they are not in the media market making sigs for the people requesting them. i think its good that people are trying it, and hopefully some will get really good. and i hope you realize many of the people trying pixel art could be under 10, and not really as good at art. so give them a break. at least i would hope its not teenagers coming up with work like that. cause there is some pretty bad stuff comin out.

Because the majority of "artwork" *coughs indiscreetly* here are generally confined to small workspaces, thus making pixel the optimal choice to convey ideas without loosing details or personality.

If it were a wall, or just some indyart, you would most likely see it painted or modeled. It wont go away.. hopefully it will get better, though.

Without meaning to be offensive to anyone, pixel sigs are childish. there's a lot of kids aged around 12 on here, hence, they love them. It's a shame really...TIf used to have some talented artists

I wish I could post some real pixel art with a bit of nudity, to show that its not mainly childish people doing pixelart in the internet at large.I don't like large generalization based on the small sampling of artists here. No offense.

prolly the same reason y i like pepsi over coke. but im not positive. pixels r ok, but they r just becoming boreing to look at.

Just as your horrible grammar is becoming a nuiscance to decipher.

nuisance (Don't mean to be a pain, just had to do it).

Anyway, it's something everyone can do (some better than others) because everyone has the software needed. You don't need to know about renders, filters, layers, etc. You just need some technique, talent, and lots of practice.

Pixel sigs are so loved, because people can have their character do whatever they want.

They can let their character raom free in their fantasy.

They can go outside the boundries of rs..

Abstract sigs (some of them) do look nice, but there is no resemblence to rs, which is why pixel sigs are more populair.

This also leads me to believe that the pixel 'craze' wil never die out.

Nudity? In pixel art? If it's conveyed in the same cartoony style, then yes, im absolutly sure that would constitute pixel's maturity base.. After all, we all know nudity translates into maturity. Hah. Like a 12 year old would ever look at nudity.. Phah! I know why you stand, and I agree, judging a group by a faction is a nice way to make yourself an idiot.. but find a better way to defend yourself! :?

Truth to the matter, most pixel sigs on this forum are childish. Ofcourse.. that generally pretains to about 60% of all non-pixel art on this forum as well. The only way to bring out the childish image is to bring in more realism. Though, ofcourse.. you have to have good skills to do that.

Futurama: Tip NEVER had any talented artists. The moment people became talented, they either left, or stopped posting their stuff here. Also, don't tell me that you were speaking of the Abstract Artists. Every abstract posted on this forum were/are usually just a tangled mess of splines or noised up teapots with a little photoshop icing on the top. You know, the type of stuff you do when you suck. I'd rather enjoy carefully mapped out scenes of drawn-artwork before I would look at some crap that was done 75% by a computer. Modeled abstract is good.. but i've never seen it around here.

There are some sigs here that "I" am actually impressed with; thats never happened before. You know what? They're all pixel. I guess I just have more in common with pixel than anything else.. after all, it's just like digital painting... with a very tiny opaque brush.

i do my best to pixel, im not so good at it, and none of my work is realistic, but i pixel mainly because i would like to improve my skills and become a better drawer and the side reason of sum extra cash but anyways i try my best wen i pixel, the reason i think ppl like pixels so much is they can do wuteva they cant do in rs, nobody is gunna order a sig of ther guy being killed in the wild and losing a bronze long and chef hat, they're gunna own sum1 in full drg and an abby whip, welp those r my thoughts on pixels and stuff

I wouldnt say that pixeling is childish, your on a forum made from an online game set for 12 year olds, your gonna get 12 year olds making pixel work :? theres no argument there.. I prefer pixeling because abstract seriously gets repetitive, no cus I cant do it, just seems like textured effects with a picture stolen from the internet stuck on.. Pixel signatures require much more creativity and imagination, I agree that abstract sigs do require a lot of work but theres something different when it comes to pixel sigs, you can develop a style, set a scene and make it entertaining to look at :D..

Theres no argument here, just a load of opinions  .. just cus people draw cartoons in pixel doesnt make it chidish, thats just your opinion.. And the 'pixel crase' isnt a crase its just a type of digital art :? , people have simply found out that they can make easy signatures on paint, its not like a fad were its really popular for a month or two then it goes away just see it like its always been around its only just started to attract young artists.

Most things have been said. I just want to highlight a few, and reiterate.

scope-you can portray anything

size- it is a perfect medium for small sig restrictions

paint- everyone has it

rs money- sorry to say but it really is what is responsible for the CRAZE. The cash rich rs market was waiting for a medium that could capture rs scenes of glory.

art- whether or not some are cartoony, at least we finally have something that requires talent. I think it is great

But the biggest thing I saw was Godslayer's comment. Why keep doing sigs when you are always taking everyone elses orders. That is why I quit doing it. The money was pointless, you could earn it faster in rs. Doing the same tired requests over and over again was a grind. When you do art for its own sake you can take pride in doing the way you really wanted to. Not the way the costomer wanted to.

I hope more of the artists get tired of the sig grind soon. Only, rather than leaving, I hope they start doing larger works.

What I haven't seen is art that is done in alias mode (such as Photoshop, PSP)... I don't know the reason- there are many free higher end art programs out there and I had much more difficulty with MS Paint than PSP8.

I wonder if anyone's going to open like... a non-pixel sig shop. If it were possible, I would start one of my own, even make avatars (such as my own) but it seems pixel is all that everyone wants. :(

Cloudline, me and ryan have opened up our own non-pixel shop, and there still is want for sigs of the sort. Are we making millions like the pixel artists? Well no, we usualy charge about 150k, and get offers from 150k-300k a sig. We of course off landscape/space/abstract and such.

Pixel art is so popular because of what people said, but the main two reasons would be:

-The money. Think about it, if you found out you could make a little picture and possibly make a million gp in runescape, of course you would be like "sweet!" Sure, some of us may say its a crappy way to start, but sadly its also the bigest inspirer when you first start (yeah, I had $$ in my head when I first start)

-The ease. It's not actualy easy to make a pixel sig, a good one that is. However, the programs come by easy. Open up ms paint or even download graphics gale, and your all good! This makes it so literaly everyone has a shot at it.

For the most part this "Craze" is a good thing. It is getting more and more interested in art, hopefully, and pixel art skills can easily start to be turned into other skills, such as digital painting. :)

I saw your landscapes. Good stuff! And when you spoke of digital painting... I'm sort of like that... a little. What I want to do is design people's RS characters/sigs/avatars, but with the pixel competition, I don't think I'll get any buyers, since people tend to love those more. ^__^

And, haha, MS Paint is MUCH harder for me to use. I don't know how they all do it, but whatever the case may be, pixel artists are successful sellers- I've seen people win millions with pixel art. Doing art will probably be the only way to make some money.

adopt_sephiroth.gif

My style, really, I'm pretty sure you all can recognize him. ^_^ If people did not pixel character design, I want to see if they became successful at the task.

Anyway, I've seen abstract ones as well, the brushwhoring and stuff... XD well, those seem to be popular, but not as popular as the pixels. :o

I just hope to see other things around someday.

I'm glad to see people taking a whack at art, since MS Paint is so under represented. I've seen amazing pixels here- it's no wonder they're a craze.

That is indeed true..

Thts why i dont really like making orders for people..

I just make a pixel sig once in a while, when I get a good idea, and I work it out..

Dear God, please dont make me start again. Ive gone into depth recently that not all abstract artists are filter whoring cloud rendering nubs. I refrain to post my renders again due to the lack of time. And dont generalize that you have never seen any good artwork here other than pixel artwork because that is a slap in the face to me; who I might add has actually purhcased Photoshop CS2 and has had experience with Photoshop since v6. Edit your post before I keep flaming because I most definately will.

c4, I know you are a reletivily new member here on TIF. From what I know, you realy haven't posted much of your stuff. We realy can't just be mind readers.

And realy, to me there have been a few artists around here that have realy impressed me, but like Sub left, as soon as they got realy good they left usualy. You can almost think of this as a .... breeding grounds, or a new area to ease new people into art. Sure, everyonce and a while we do get talented artists here, but it never seems like they post much.
