Getting a Job at 14 [Lock Please]

Also, look in places most people don't expect. Most people in school apply to like Mcdonalds or a nearby grocery store and because of that most of those places aren't hiring. Try to be original, my friends and I looked at Toys R Us and found that they actually were looking to fill 10 positions. I didn't end up applying since I can't drive yet and having to bum a ride to work everyday would be a little annoying.

But I suggest waiting till summer or even another year. If you really need money now try asking your parents for a "loan" and pay them off once you get the job.

That's why I don't have a job yet. But now I can drive, and tomorrow when i go pick up Halo Wars I'm going to see if I can get an application for Gamestop.

I'm 14 and I had a paper round for a few months when I needed the cash.

Just go to your local newsagents and ask if they have one going around. If they dont, leave your contact details, and they should call you when one frees up.

NEVER work for your parents.

I have fallen for it, and it SUCKS.

1st. They will generally pay you crap.

2nd. They use your pay against you.

3rd. They will always go to you first if someone is missing from work.

My reasons for this to be true.

1. My parents paid me minimum(8.65) for a job that people would normally be paid 12.

2. Parents threaten to take my paycheck when I do one lousy thing wrong.

3. "What? Loretta isn't at work? Well, my son is at home for sure (Or at so and so's house down the block), so I could get him, and I wouldn't want to bother anyone." THEY ALWAYS KNOW WHERE I AM... ARGH.

Of course, the business COULD just be trying to take advantage of me being 14 and not ever receiving a paycheck before...

Which reminds me of other idiot job people. Used to be a paperboy when I was 9 or 10. PAPER ROUTES are COMPLETE ripoffs. They take advantage of most paperboys being like... 8 or 10 and not knowing about pay, and then pay them friggin $20 a month to deliver papers for like... 3 or four hours a week. And even after that, my boss/paycheck guy would often NOT SHOW UP WITH MY MONEY. I quit after 4 months with no goddamn pay. I have still yet to receive my $80 from that SOB.

Basically, before you get a job, make sure your boss is a nice person, and attempt to get to know him or her (even just a little) before you accept a job offer. 14 year olds tend to get screwed over for pay.

I've thought about working for my parents. But I'm not a nuclear medical technician nor a bank teller.

So, really, I guess I could mow lawns for both of them.

catch it now so you can like it before it went so mainstream

The lawn thing sounds a good idea....however, as a male, how about washing and valeting cars? More people are likely to want a car cleaned. put up a few adverts, and every week or so, ask down your street if they want any work done? Exterior cleaning you could get say £5 a car or equivalent, but also offer an interior clean.....hardly anyone has the time or can be bothered to clean the interior. Thats another £5, if not more. If you use your own equipment, you could be getting at least £10 an hour depending on your speed. Much higher than any other 14 year old earns in an official set-up.

Car washing is also a great idea. I might do that this summer, too. It's best if you get some hot lady friends to help in bikinis, or if you yourself are good looking in a swimsuit.

Have them hold signs saying "topless carwash" and just have the guys wash the cars.

Well my first sorta-real job was detasseling here in Iowa... picking the tops off of corn for 10 hours straight is boring but if alot of your friend's do it, it can be fun. Starting out pay sucks but if you stick with it you get paid alot more. But the real money is in private companies I believe. Here is a link that tells a bit more about it... all in all I was glad I did it, got me an Ipod . You pick during the summer, usually for 2-3 weeks maybe. Get up at 4:30 A.M., the bus to the field usually leaves shortly afterward somewhere nearby, hour lunch break at 11, go back and work till 2-3 P.M.

I've been working part-time jobs pretty much non- stop since I was 13 years old. It's really not as hard as people make it out to be, you just have to know where to look and present yourself right.

Phone- Telemarketing is extremely easy, although if you have a high pitched voice or don't know to how to communicate with people well, I don't recommend it. Just sit on your [wagon] for hours, calling people and asking for charity :). Solid 10$ / hour.

I've made 2.5 grand in the last 7 months working 2-3 days a week and I'm 15 now. Live life.

Bloody impossible. Mow lawns. Trust me, it's impossible to find a real job, and if you get a couple friends and offer edging, weeding, and pruning, you'll make oodles. I'm talking ten grand over two months. My brother and his best friend did that every June and July, and that's the general amount they'd each make.

Make sure to go to rich neighborhoods, though. Not the ones that hire immigrants for a few bucks to garden, just below those ones.

Mowing lawns in such a... Primitive? Method of earning money. You see I earn my money by doing household chores and doing good in school. (10 bucks a week for doing dishes and $100 every 6 weeks if I get straight A's)

See if you can offer to do dishes, or clean around the house every weekend for money.

I wish I got bribed like that.

I ref, same situation. 15 in two days tho.

Mow lawns or w/e. Not a whole lot.

Thoroughly retired, may still write now and again

When I last checked the law for Australia was 15 and 9 months. That goes without saying, it may have changed since then. What state and country do you live in? Laws are different overseas. In some countries you can work when you turn 13.

The only people who tell you that you can't do something are those who have already given up on their own dreams so feel the need to discourage yours.

You're best bet in my opinion would be in fast food. Not only are there plenty of hours, but the work is easy and little experience is neccersary. Not to mention once you get your foot in the door at KFC, Mcdonalds or Burger King you can lead yourself into a career in hospitality.

Some tips when applying for a job in hospitality:

Be prepared to smile alot even if you don't feel like it.

You will have to do things you don't want, just do it.

You won't get along with everyone.

The most important thing is remember that it is a job that you will have to do even if you don't like it. But i'd say go for it, many places look at experience in fast food places with great interest. They are big companies, they have standards if you do excellent work in those places it shows great customer service experience for future career oppurtunities.

In Australia, where I live anyway, You can get a job at 14. BUT, only at places like McDonalds, KFC, Hungry Jacks (Burger King), etc etc.

I blame that for the growing popularity of fat kids..

Not fat food in schools.

I dont need a siggy no moar.

Anyone here been a waiter? I'm considering it when I turn sixteen. And then, in college. Even if I only got paid a little more than minimum wage by that time (maybe eight an hour, it's how much my brother made), the tips would probably make up for it. Right?

catch it now so you can like it before it went so mainstream

Why would you be a waiter?

You have to deal with such annoying people continously calling you over to tell you the food sucks.

Tips, lad. Tips. And I don't know why I put eight an hour. Of course waiters don't make that much. They make like two. I feel stupid, because I knew that. >_<

Besides, you have to deal with annoying as [bleep] people no matter what. Might as well be able to spit in their food. (Just kidding, that would get your [wagon] fired really fast)

Not if you don't get caught ;) BUt I think you have to be 17 or 18 (handling alcohol).

Anyways, thanks for all the help everyone - it looks like I won't be able to get a job, as I just signed up for track and I'm gonna be busy essentially every day now. Maybe I'll get a job in the summer - and I'll still be 14.

Thanks for the replies, but since this thread bears no use to me as of now for now, I am going to request it locked.
