DerekZoolandah
Was wondering how many people took a debate class\have taken one or are on a debate team? I've been taking it this year and our class is really bad heh. We had our first, thorough debate today (been working on it since the beginning of the year) about whether the Atomic Bombs on Japan were justified. I did a good job (it was a 2v2 debate, and we were against it) and so did my partner. I think we won. Our opponents failed to answer a lot of our arguements, and simply kept stating the same thing over and over again. They felt the need to repeat that they attacked us at Pearl Harbor and so it was justified. Overall it was really fun. I love doing debates that I actually care about. Anyways, share your debate experiences and such. I present to you men, His Imperial Majesty Emperor Norton I. What a guy.
1_man_army
I don't think I'd do well in a structured debating class. I really need to have a strong opinion about my subject to be bothered debating on it. He who learns must suffer, and, even in our sleep, pain that cannot forget falls drop by drop upon the heart, and in our own despair, against our will, comes wisdom to us by the awful grace of God. - Aeschylus (525 BC - 456 BC)

I really need to have a strong opinion about my subject to be bothered debating on it. This. I don't usually do well in debates I don't have a strong opinion on. Even so, I don't think I could hold myself in topics I have a strong opinion in.
Quoi_Tu
I'm horrible at debates. I can maybe point out flaws in people's reasoning, but I've never been one for debating. The only formal debate I've done was about legalizing medical marijuana, which turned out quite boring since few people of the opposition actually opposed it. And those who did had little factual support. Beer
llamster
I was in a debate class over the summer and it was pretty good. I think I'm pretty decent at it but I'm not terribly good. Ah, this reminds me about the noob on the Runescape forums who was upset with the quest "Cold War" because apparently his grandparents died in the war. :wall:
Nom
The only formal debate I've done was about legalizing medical marijuana, which turned out quite boring since few people of the opposition actually opposed it. And those who did had little factual support. That's also the only formal debate I've ever done, for a freshman Oral Communications class. We won by default because the other side (against) didn't have some thing or other to turn in to the teacher  It didn't matter that we pretty much destroyed them. Faux
I don't like formal debates. Too structured for my liking. :: Guess the Movie Contest Champion: pfilc23 ::
ThurinEthir
My history/social studies teachers in sixth and seventh grade made us do some "debates." More like...11 year old kids having no idea what they're talking about and parroting things they read online. There was one about spending money on Africa, another was about a hypothetical situation in the army. You really can't have a good [political] debate in Massachusetts, at least in a class. Too many liberals. ;) If I care about what I'm debating about (That's a general rule, for me at least. If I care, I'll do much better), I like debates. Generally because I care = I know more. If I don't care, then nah. Not only do I most likely not know much about it, but I wouldn't be motivated enough. Zierro
We had debates in my Law Studies and American Government classes. They were okay, but it gets annoying when people just say the same thing over again - back and forth. And when people just toss in big words but show very little application to the topic at hand. It matters what you say! Not how you say it! I try to debate a lot in real life with family members and friends. It's one of those things that requires practice. I find it much easier to debate on the internet though. You have more time to think. Plus you don't risk your social relationships depending on your opinions. :P
Kenshinjapan
You can't really call what you went through a debate. A debate team on the higher level gets the topic immediately before they perform against the opposing team and are told what side they are to be on. Remember, debate isn't standing up for what you believe in, it's about arguing the best. YOU! ATTEND TET EVENTS! CLICK HERE!
ElkNight
Ive really only done one debate. I argued why it was right for the white people to basically take over North America. We (me and my partner) actually won. I was amazed. 8,180WONGTONG IS THE BEST AND IS MORE SUPERIOR THAN ME#1 Wongtong stalker.Im looking for some No Limit soldiers! i_love_burritos
Whenever you want to construct the perfect rebuttal just pull your pants down... Anyway, I am in a debating class, and I actually quite enjoy it. Sometimes it can be difficult to make a sensible and coherent argument, but thats where your other team members and quick thinking come in. Lots of fun. Nenga
I'd be horrible at debate class. The only subjects I debate are the ones I actually care about. I don't care to debate subjects that happened in the past. They already happened and when you're done they will still have happened. Ponies! mmmcannibalism
did a mock trial or two in ap us history, interestingly I managed to defend Andrew Jackson against impeachment successfully, yay for calling executive privelidge. (I hate jackson and thought he should be impeached so its funny). Orthodoxy is unconciousnessthe only ones who should kill are those who are prepared to be killed. DerekZoolandah
I like taking part in debates. Actually, I just love yelling at people.... .. which wouldn't be considered a debate at all. Anyway, I am in a debating class, and I actually quite enjoy it. Sometimes it can be difficult to make a sensible and coherent argument, but thats where your other team members and quick thinking come in. Lots of fun. Yeah, that's true. The hardest are 1v1's. We had a surprise debate where we just chose sides right then and there, and had no time to prepare, so a person's quick thinking really came in handy. chazzycaz
I have a debate coming up! Me and 2 other peeps are going into London to compete with 20 other schools in a "scientific debate" for the Royal pharmaceutical society. :ohnoes: The topics will be: "Should smokers have to pay for their own healthcare for smoking related diseases" and one other one which we dont find out until the day, probably a drug related one, making one legal or making it a lower class, etc. Gonna be fun I hope, its gonna be structured, I just hope I dont lock up when its my turn to argue! :ohnoes: Just kidding ladies, you know I love you =DGuide to Making Money with NPC Trading
dsavi
I think it would be cool to join one, as long as it was in my mother tongue. I don't like debating on forums all that much, about real life issues anyway.
Lateralus
The topics will be: "Should smokers have to pay for their own healthcare for smoking related diseases" This is an open and shut case, in Britain at least. About 80% of the cost of every packet of cigarettes I buy goes to the tax man. The 2004 figures I'm looking at show a government revenue of £9.3 billion versus a £1.5 billion cost to the NHS for smoking related illnesses. La lune ne garde aucune rancune. Quoi_Tu
An American brand? :P That price is closer to New York prices. North Carolina has old tobacco towns and still has many producing factories, so cigarettes and pipe tobacco (the only kind of tobacco NC soil is good at growing) are fairly cheap here.
