I didn't know how babies were made then ::' But they had Ganondorf, no?

This is very interesting. Too bad it's Friday, I'd like to ask my bio teacher (the one I had the alien nightmare about, who is now my spring track coach) more about it :-k

Genomic imprinting pretty much makes parthenogenesis in humans impossible. It's basically how the genes in eggs are stamped as "motherly", and sperm as "fatherly". This is backed up by the fact that, depending on whether there is a deletion from the mother or the fathers chromosome in the chromosome pair 15, there are 2 different disorders. Angelman's and prae-der-wili syndrome i believe are the disorders.

TLDR: a zygote will not develop even if two perfectly healthy eggs fertilize one another. In humans, anyways.

That, and there's a lot more to fertilizing an egg that makes parthenogenesis impossible. Just another example is the fact that the entry point of the sperm cell into the egg cell determines in what "direction" the organism will develop. And much more about embryogenesis is still elusive.

Most of the sperm isn't a full sperm anyways.

in all the things in life that are fun to do one in particular stands out and makes every one nod in appreciation towards the act of making a baby. So some guy just decided to say i'm going to make babies without the fun part. Hold on... isn't that what making babies is all about (kinda)? you get to a: create a lifeform that has the dna similar to yours and your partners, and b: you have loads of fun doing it *pun intended*. I guess the most ideal human society is the one where every one is communist, conforms, doesn't get corrupted, has a mother father, has fun by churning butter (literally churning butter), and makes babies without having to take any clothing off.

Wow, watching this thread is better than pro wrestling! =D>

This thread is probably better than pro wrestling because the fights here are real (And the boobs).

Cool, someone studying what I am. :)

From what I know, you're right - imprinting makes the idea of parthenogenesis pretty much impossible.

The only mechanism I know of that would lead to parthenogenesis in humans is called uniparental diploidy, which is where both sets of chromosomes are inherited from one parent. The problem here is that (as you pointed out) there is either a maternal or paternal imprinting pattern on various genes which means they are methylated and thereby inactivated. Without either the maternal or paternal set of chromosomes, there is no set of non-imprinted genes for the corresponding set of imprinted genes, so gene function is compromised. Given how commonplace imprinting is, the zygote does not develop into a viable human.

You're also right with deletions on 15 causing Angelman's or Prader-Willi syndrome, of course depending on whether the deletions are on the maternal or paternal chromosome. Interesting stuff!

It's never actually happened though, right?

its never been recorded, but its possible it happened and was missed. If the woman was married and trying to get pregnant, miscarriages etc. plenty of ways it could have happened without being noticed

Orthodoxy is unconciousness

the only ones who should kill are those who are prepared to be killed.

So if women just keep producing X amount of babies that are all female, the male species will die out? They don't need men at all. Well this is given that this is happening and all women can do this. Which is not the case lol.

Can't some type of frogs do this?

Parthogenesis happens in mammals, though. (That's what the OP said)
