Iowa, and now Vermont, Pass Same-Sex Marriage Laws

Gay rights activists, as well as Christians of virtually every denomination, have denounced him as a producer of anti-gay propaganda and violence-inspiring hate speech.

So really, God hates hatemongers misreading His novel?

Joke, joke, no need to bring out the pitchforks...

To be fair, religion did hold 'us' back for a long time due to it's power-house status during the Middle Ages. It's not so much of an issue now tho; so long as you haveno religious nut-job in a position of power... or something.

Yeah, but I hate it when people blame us not having fusion-powered wings on religion. We'd be lucky to be where we were in the 1700s if the Catholic Church wasn't chillin' out when Rome fell. While a whole bunch of crappy stuff came around due to people being idiots, that occurs in everything - plus, the bad is always remembered far more clearly than the good.

I still hold to what I've seen as the truth that organized religion pretty much held together the world back then. Crazy times and crazy people stuck to the one thing that was a little bit less crazy.

catch it now so you can like it before it went so mainstream

I think we're getting somewhere. ::'

I'm just waiting, just waiting for a major disaster to hit Iowa and then waiting for Westboro.

What other states have legalised it ?

I wouldn't be so quick to say that homosexual couples can't raise a child, either, even though that's not the topic here. What psychological literature do you have to back that up? Something reliable, please.

Just read an interesting report from the Australian Institute of Family Matters. Current evidence suggests there is no significant difference in psychological adjustment between children of homosexual parents and children of heterosexual parents, more research is needed. http://www.aifs.gov.au/institute/pubs/f ... m59/vr.pdf

The most interesting part of this article, though, is the survey-based study they did. They basically asked a whole bunch of school kids who have homosexual parents about their experiences with bullying, teachers and friends. They suggest better education and tolerance of diversity could help, as could better support groups. Good ideas.

It's never really that simple...

I'm Catholic, I don't mind gay people. There were several Christian churches in the area that opposed California's Prop. 8 (The reason SSM is banned here), and chances are, atheists that voted for it. In this case, religion may hold a part of people's opinions, it is in no way the sole factor.

I'm Catholic and I'm not against gay marriage. We're not all old, right-wing grouches, y'know.

Oh Religion always uses that excuse

Homosexuality would not be a taboo had the Christian church not condemned it for thousands of years :|

"He could climb to it, if he climbed alone, and once there he could suck on the pap of life, gulp down the incomparable milk of wonder."

Look, "god" or whatever doesn't hate gays. In fact he Loves everyone. The reason why gay people are hated are because they are different, and thus not "normal" in every sense of the term. From a homophobic's point of view. To answer the question fully - you have to understand why exactly the Christain church condemned it in the first place.

Why should other people care?

From a Catholic point of view, I don not want anyone going to hell.

Catholics do not hate gays.

Catholics only disagree with their actions.

Catholics see it as a 'disorder'.

Like single men/women, they are required to abstain from sex.

If a Catholic hated gays so much, all they would have to do is stop preaching. To a Catholic, Hell is the worst punishment ever imaginable.

If it was up to the christian church, the world would still be flat.

Disagreeing with their actions... requiring them to abstain from sex... why does the catholic church think they can force their beliefs upon other people? Just let them do their thing and just keep your beliefs for yourself.

True, but what is wrong with saving ones soul?

The Church is not anti-scientific.

The Church is not anti-scientific.

You see it as saving ones soul, I see it as forcing some sort of moral upon other people, that is based upon fairy tales. And while you might not, there are a lot of religious people trying to force their beliefs upon others.

Religion is fine, as long as you keep it to your own living room.

If you hate any group of people based on external or biological factors they have had since birth & cannot control them (sexual preference and skin color being probably the most prominent ones that people get discriminated by), your thinking is obstructed and biased.

You haven't read the numerous university studies that clearly show beyond any doubt that you can't effect whether you like your own gender or the opposite. Homosexuality exists in all societies, even non-human ones (such as other primates, but also species totally unrelated to the human race). The 10% is probably true, although during my lifetime I'd say maybe 2-3% of the people I met preferred their own gender in relationships.

Not that I find it surprising, because statistically every society has a set percentage (%) of racists, ultranationalists, gay-haters, etc... A few will be present here as well. Even on a forum, despite their small representation in society. There is almost no way to make these people think rationally from a neutral point of view. As long as they don't incite violence or discrimination, it's a legal expression of free speech (despite not being a logical perspective)

If it was up to the christian church, the world would still be flat.

The common misconception that people before the age of exploration believed that Earth was flat entered the popular imagination after Washington Irving's publication of The Life and Voyages of Christopher Columbus in 1828. This belief is even repeated in some widely read textbooks.

Gay people cannot control the fact that they are attracted to the same sex. They should be able to be married just like everyone else.
