Filter out younger players in public chat?

I'm 13, and to be quite honest you seem like the kind of person who'd go on my ignore list. And there's an ignore list for a reason, use it, be happy, and expect idiots at green dragons.

I'm thirteen, but does that means that I should be filtered just due the fact of my age? Half the time my regular chat is set to friends and off. And I cope perfectly. And if anything, you're sounding a little prejudice and hypocrite when you're saying that all kids shouldn't even be allowed to speak? Small world.

It's a game, in general, younger people are going to hate you for beating them at something, say, kills at green dragons (not for your case but the main point of the thread is a maturity issue). Age should not be the only factor for a filter, it's easy to bypass alot of tests and cheat, because it's the internet. Infact, a better solution, is for a new rule, Idiocy.

Imo, if there is a rule against it, less people would do it and get away with it. There may be flaws with this idea, but JaGex can find a way around that... they always find a way =p.

on a bit of an off-topic situation, I think it would be nice to individually kick immature people from your house ;)

  • 3 weeks later...

Hmmm, well adults tend to be a whole lot more annoying the kids, I find. Adults who have found facebook and freaked out on the whole internet thing are the worst...you find them standing by iron rocks asking why can't they mine anything and 'Someone said I should get an axe, so I did but it isn't working.'

You then try to explain to them that they need a pick axe and need to mine tin and copper, but they starting freaking out then...or just simply log off. Then two weeks later you get a PM from them telling you that they just got given some Iron so you don't need to mine tin and copper after all.

Added to that the ones that ask you where do you get a house, you then it explain it to them, they pay the one K(Which more often than not you have to give them) and then they report you because there is no house there. Or because they don't want their house there, they want it somewhere else, but have run out of GPies(They serouisly say that), and so start reporting people.

How do I know? Partly because I am a nice person so I try to help them, but mainly because I have a friend on facebook who tells me about these people who have posted:

Tried a game called Runescape and everyone called me a noob whatever that is and then I kept getting people try to scam me haha!!!!! I think you should never try it.

Its actually rather sad to watch, and goes some of the way to explaining why you don't have alot of adults playing this game...unless it works without actually having to try(most, not all) adults don't want to know. Its the opposite with children, most of them are willing to give it a try. Though all of them want it to work without having to try, hence why fletching is so popular.

So my view is that filtering people out based on age won't work because it stops the people, who actually have a chance of sticking with the game, from asking, while allowing the people who are complete idiots to ask away. Not all adults are idiots, but a high percentage of them act like idiots when trying to play Runescape...so maybe a boundry of say 18-22 can chose not to use quick chat...

Or more reasonable just live with the idioits of this world.

Well I knew you wouldn't agree. I know how you hate facing facts.

NO.

So just because I'm 13 or any age below 18, I am immature? On the contrary, its YOU who is immature. You're stereotyping and discriminating against a whole community of people just because of a few idiots? So we should also filter all adults just because one adult keeps spamming and swearing?

And by the way, your horrible English makes you seem more like a 13 year old immature idiot. How can we trust that you're a certain age? Its the internet. You can give a false age. I could say I'm (insert a believable but untrue age).

I don't know why so many of the so-called "older" and "more mature" people always discriminate and stereotype "children".

P.S. Use your ignore list.

Your post is proof that adults can be just as immature. The problem isn't children - it's idiots, which doesn't exclude adults.

=D>

Seriously, isn't it annoying when the adults blame the kids for being idiots, then go off and prove that they themselves are idiots?

So, the question that comes out of this is: Is a kid who gets called an idiot by an adult who really IS an idiot, is the kid still an idiot, or does the judgment of the idiot reverse itself?

I get your point. In my 5 years on RuneScape I've been annoyed by many such people. For me, it even became a reason to stop being a player mod (in the time before the grand exchange, in f2p, it was horrible).

However, I oppose the opinion of having people identify themselves merely to use a service like RuneScape membership. It should be the individual's (or their parent's) choice whether or not they use it, and asking them for proof of age is not Jagex' right to ask.

You may have noticed that players have an ignore list, and if that's too much trouble for you (like me, I can't be bothered to put people in my ignore list) just be mature and ignore them. Sometimes tell them they're too childish to even acknowledge and you'll be fine.

Otherwise there's still a report abuse button you can click, and perhaps some less crowded worlds would also help.

In any case, I do hope you enjoy playing and meet many mature players to talk to. ;)

EDIT:

I agree with this guy

Immaturity has no relation with age in my eyes.

And, say, you were young yourself once, do you honestly think all young people are some kind of immature, begging, mean monsters? It is people who like you who start wars and murder out whole groups just because of their religion, ethnicity or in your case age. If you started playing RS before you were 18 and a whole group ignores you before they even get to know that... Do you honestly think that would do the community any good?

We are all just human beings, some act good, some act bad. But this really doesn't depend on age.

I'm sorry, but your statement of children being arrogant, middle-classed allmighty human arseholes is false.

For example, I'm 14, and, should the situation arise, I will ask another player if I can say for example slay fire giants with them. Most agree and let me go. However, I decided 1 day to try an experiment. I decided to get members on my pure and do the same thing. I went onto my main, went to fire giants. Asked the fellow beside me if I could slay some of these and he agreed. No flaming invoked, and I went and had a conversation with him.

I then went onto my pure. What I did was I gave no introduction and just went straight in there. The guy instantly threw up his defences and said that I was in his spot.

Now getting back on topic: age doesn't matter. I've seen a lot more 20> arseholes than I have seen teen arseholes like you stated. But if this gets implemented, all you're doing is censoring, like how reporters are getting censored from Zimbabwe, and all you'll be doing then is provoking all of us under 18 to get our parents pasports and scan it.

When you deny people the right to express themselves you force them to do evil in order to be heard. Evil only committed because all good action has been made impossible.

I challange any response against this to be made with only Quick-Chat phrases and then you can tell me I am lying when I say that 'all good action has been made impossible.'

I did notice that when players make an account while being under the age of 13, they are muted. They can only use quickchat until they are 13.

How is thát a solution?

Edit: When they say they are under 13 when creating the account, of course.

A clear sign of maturity is the ability to cope with less mature people.

Dealing with idiots is part of life, if we lost that ability the apocalypse would have happened already.

ANyhoo

Runescape's target demographic is still tweens and teens so I seriously doubt Jagex will filter its vast majority of players.

If you can't handle children I suggesting moving to a MMO with a more mature target base.

I disagree completely, I am so sick of people assuming that the older you are the more mature you are. In some cases it is true, but there are plenty of twenty or so years olds I have met through this game who are the most childish people I have ever met, whereas there are some players whom I've known since they were Nine or Ten who are the nicest, maturist players ever.

A clear sign of maturity is the ability to cope with less mature people.

This is a great saying to live by, ignore them. This is a place to just have fun. Where in the world people think that F2P is lowly and immature and Membership is mature and godly is beyond me. So you parent's pay for membership for you? You work to pay for it? You do little odd chores around to the home to earn the money for it?

You shouldn't be restricted convenience in getting it just so they can check your age. If it would bother you so much, I suppose there could be a filter option added, BUT I don't think the quality of conversations would increase.

You could use your ignore list, it might make chatting a bit more nicer.

I love how in the rant you quoted, they are saying that this game was made for adults, It's requirements are 13+ /Sarcasm.

While I disagree, there is definately a reasonable side to the argument.

After all alot of younger players are immature, and while adults are also immature, the adults tend to use words which do not get passed the filters. While younger people are always inventing words to be immature with, or using the mundane words like 'Flump'

Therefore the younger people are less filtered than the older people, and thus maybe a new filter should be added, specifically targetted at young people.

Though as Shaz rightly said, it is unlikely to improve the quality of your conversations...

But then what literary conversations were we going to have on RS anyway?

In many sense we are all immature in our conversations...as is Runescape, if you are making 50K of Yew Longs you are not going to have a serouis debate about Shakespeare, more likely a game of eye-spy.

Surely we have the right not to have people string us along for half an hour before they say 'it was Fart lolz'.

So maybe, I am thinking, there is some kind of Maturity Random Event, where five people are beamed off somewhere to play a game of Eye-Spy (everyone has to agree that the game has finished). Sure there are simple work arounds 'I spy with my little eye: its a fish'

Or even some sort of community based random event. So people were forced to co-operate for a little bit. If someone was AFK or whatever then the work around would be to log out.

Well I knew you wouldn't agree. I know how you hate facing facts.

It would be a much better game if everyone 13- was filtered out. 1 thing that wont work though, is what if they want to buy somethig, but most of the players have them filtered out, they could never get anything. Also, they could just lie about their age. I could right now tell Jagex im 9, or tell them im 35. Woulnt be that hard.

0barbarica0, I agree when you said you can tell their age by their behavior. There are some very annoying kids in RuneScape who have really bad grammar. I think RuneScape should be 14 and up and if younger than 14, then you should be accompanied by a parent. Younger and immature players really do spoil the game, especially the ones who BEG!

Hi, my name is Dean and I'm from USA! I'm currently 34 years old!

See how easy that was to lie? Are you expecting them to seriously do that? Waste of time, no real way of achieving their real age because....why would anyone type their real age if their 12. They aren't stupid enough to write 12 if they know they won't be able to talk. Ignore is there for a reason! :)
