I Have a Great Idea for a Game, but I Can't program it =-(

I know I'll need to wright my own game engin...probly using Vbasic, and C++......I have no clue how to program, or a good free compiler/manual.

Any way, I have been thincking of this for a long time, and have been working out game play problems......for get Runescape, this is nothing like it.

The grafics I plan on having ajustable low, medum, and high....they will look some were inbetween WoW, and EQ2.

The game it's self will be sci-fi theamed, and be nothing like what is currently on the market.

Players start with the pick of a limited amount of Races, each race has it's strenghts, and weaknesses. The starting area will be a small prision colony, the player will have to compleate certain easy quests that will teach him/her the basics of the game, game play e.t.c. (forget newby island on RS)

The skills will be a quite a few, and players do not have to do things over and over again to advance, and will not be able to gain LVLs on doing low LVL items (pretty much like the WoW system of skill LVLing)....skills will be broken down....instead of "crafting" (for example) you'll have leather working, gold/silver smithing, jewlry making, pottery, e.t.c.

Game play is vast, and different depending on what you want to do..creat and shoot your own lasers, or go head to head with other players on hand to hand combat, hop into a small fighter craft you build, or take a battle station in the destroyer your guild built. Space ship-to-ship combat in another aspect of game play  .

You read above you can fight on ships you build, using material you gathered, and things you crafted. A player will not have to LVL up in all skills to do the things they want to do, you can take certain skills. For example if you want to build lasers for your star fighter, you'd need to get the skills advanced engeneering(lvl 120) , electrical (lvl 90), jewlermaking (lvl 40), intelect of lvl 300, dextarity lvl of 85, and a few other others ((you'll need to compleate other skills to get these, for example you's need to compleate "basic engeneering" befor going on to "advanced engeneering", e.t.c.))

The economy will be player fueled, I wand about 80% of items made by players the other 20% will be from drops and shops.

Items will take damage, if it gets to 0 you'll have to get it fixed (for a fee from an NPC) in order to use it (you could fix it your self if you had the materials, and skills)

eh *? those "great ideas" you had were really really bad and overused in mmorpg genre.

And you think coding an mmorpg with vbasic? lol at that.

Show me another game were you build your own spaceships....weapons, powersorce, shields, e.t.c. and can pretty much costomize it like you want...

I think its time to start thinking about a new game that'll never be made now.

I know of eve, you SELECT a ship, and fight it. ..quite boring, and as sayed befor ship-to-ship combat is only part of the game. (on top of the fact, my game you get to build a ship part by part, and customize it.)

Sounds interesting.. I'm assuming you have alot more planned out that u havn't posted.

Coding a mmorpg is no easy task (and certianly one that would be rediculous if not impossible to do in VB). You're not going to find someone here who would write it for you (as it would take a single highly skilled programmer years to write up such a game even if you designed everything for them).

If you are truly serious about this, you can look around at different companies that already produce computer games and pitch the idea to them.

What is Second Life? Overview

Second Life is a virtual world - a 3D online persistent space totally created and evolved by its users. Within this vast and rapidly expanding place, you can do, create or become just about anything you can imagine. Built-in content creation tools let you make almost anything you can imagine, in real time and in collaboration with others. An incredibly detailed digital body ('Avatar') allows a rich and customizable identity. A powerful physics simulation running on a backbone of hundreds of connected computers and growing with the population allows you to be immersed in a visceral, interactive world that as of April 2005 covers more than 12,000 acres and 20,000 owned plots of land. The ability to design and resell 3D content, combined with the ability to own and develop land and a microcurrency, which can be exchanged to real money means that you can build a real business entirely within Second Life.

A few months ago, Will Wright's presentation of Spore at the Game Developer's Conference absolutely floored us. Imagine a game that starts with single-celled microorganisms and allows you to control the evolution of a species all the way to galactic conquest.

I'm not too sure what you are trying to describe since you were a little vague but I think these games may be similar to the one you̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢re thinking about. To put it simply, no matter what idea you̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢ve had it's probably been pitched before. Not to mention coding a game is extremely hard you really need a university degree to start coding it. Even then you need dozen's of people to help out with things such as visuals, sound and the game engine. It would cost you millions to make a game in the same quality as WoW or EQ2.

I̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢ve even had an idea for a game where it would be an MMO where your main sources of income is by building buildings while you also destroy the enemies. Basically a few corporations that battle it out with each other to dominate the construction business. It sounds a little odd but who wouldn̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢t have fun blowing up buildings or escorting shipments of supplies or finishing that construction contract for a mounted machine gun on a building before enemy re-enforcements come.

It might be fun to think up about ideas for games but unless you are willing to dedicate yourself to years of work to learning to program and creating a program that might not even make any money or get any interest whatsoever you should just keep it to your imagination.

Even now I̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢m having trouble writing a program to solve a maths equation (getting rounding errors), I can̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢t honestly imagine what kind of problem I would have programming a game. But if you really want to make a game read tutorials on how to program in C++, when you start to see how much there is to even to say hello I think you'll quickly change your mind.

Well I dont know ANYTHING about the programs mentioned only taken in the ideas. They sound really good. Good luck with everything.

And no lol why do you always want to get stuff from John Lewis. Its over ̣̉300 more then than what i paid.

John Lewis is a great, great shop.

Sounds just like Runescape, but then with a science fiction theme. Instead of mining some coald and rune ore for a full rune armour you collect laser generators and jet engins to make your own spaceship.

skills will be broken down....instead of "crafting" (for example) you'll have leather working, gold/silver smithing, jewlry making, pottery, e.t.c.

So that means it will take about ten times as much time to get your level.

The game it's self will be sci-fi theamed, and be nothing like what is currently on the market.

Sorry, this made me laugh, I think you can think of the reasons why it made me laugh, and I think that says enough. Your idea isn't really original, and apparantely it has been done before.

Sorry to pop your bubble (if it hasn't popped by now), but that game is nothing original. Just a runescape with some updates.

I wouldn't suggest sending it to a game company as a game idea because:

1. Game companies usually don't care about ideas that are send to them and just trow them to carbage bin unopened.

2. The start of the post.

Reality is hundreds of times more beautiful and more interesting than delusions. Fairy tales just tend to be easier to follow than the wonderful intricacies of life.

The problem with game ideas is that in most cases it has either been done before, or has been thought of before and discarded. What you are suggesting is basically a mix of SWG and Eve, with added focus on customizing vehicles. Being able to make customize parts of the experience is central to gameplay, so it is safe to assume that particular concept has been thought of many times by various companies. Why hasn't it been introduced? Probably because it simply isn't worth it. To allow the player to "build" vehicles in detail requires enormous amounts of work, and when you develop a game you cannot simply add all features that sounds cool. You have to prioritize, and this is done by choosing the features which provide the most fun for the least work. Every hour spent making this and that minor part replaceable is one hour less spent doing something else, such as balancing the combat system.

Most people have a few ideas about games they think would be cool, but more often than not they are simply not do-able considering the limited time developers have to produce games. If you had twenty volunteers and several years to spare, you could probably make a very detailed game. However, by that time it would probably be technically obselete.

It really depends on the quality of the game. As long as the programmer only has to worry about the coding, and all the graphics are finished, and it's extremely simplistic, it can be done in less.
