First things you do to a new computer

I was just wondering, what is the first thing you do when you get a new computer and it's ready to use (i.e OS installed and all)?

What's the first thing you change, the first things you download?

For me, I would download CCleaner, Firefox, Steam, Windows Live messenger and Kaspersky. Then I would just customise the settings to suit me, which is generally a cross between aesthetics and performance, depending on the computer.

What about you?

So don't let anyone tell you you're not worth the earth,

These streets are your streets, this turf is your turf,

Don't let anyone tell you that you've got to give in,

Cos you can make a difference, you can change everything,

Just let your dreams be your pilot, your imagination your fuel,

Tear up the book and write your own damn rules,

Use all that heart, hope and soul that you've got,

And the love and the rage that you feel in your gut,

And realise that the other world that you're always looking for,

Lies right here in front of us, just outside this door,

And it's up to you to go out there and paint the canvas,

After all, you were put on the earth to do this,

So shine your light so bright that all can see,

Take pride in being whoever the [bleep] you want to be.

I mostly do personalizing, some clean-up, and the running of a handful of scripts (install my Java for me, my flash, blacklist a handful of annoying modules, and so forth). Not much else I do, really - I don't put the machine through its paces (read: I don't bring my machine TO ITS KNEES) until I've finished tinkering with it to my satisfaction.

I install a few temp checker softwares and RAM test to make sure everything is in working order. - If I built it that is.

Then install/get basic programs Avira, Spybot, VLC, firefox, format factory, Alcohol 120% ect.

Prebuilt - format it.

Built myself - boot into BIOS, configure boot order, set clock, check temps and fan speed and so on. Then after I've installed Windows and booted into it, I then install all of my applications and set them up. Also, switch theme to Windows Classic if on XP.

I guess the very first thing is to install updates and such. (what I did with my laptop). The first real thing I do though is load up a few intensive games (like crysis and such) and see how they run, so I guess you could say I pretty much benchmark the machine -- even before downloading antivirus software.

What I usually do is install the latest drivers for the hardware, stop programs I don't want from loading or disable them (msconfig and services.msc), then Windows update to have it to date. Then I do stress tests to see how it runs and benchmark it's performance using programs like 3dmark etc. I then install programs I use everyday (well AV for protection, even if I realized it's pretty much useless for me to have one), like Firefox, Opera, Notepad++, other programs.

EW!!!!!!!!!

For me, I basically set Windows up how I like it, then go on Microsoft Update so everything's fully patched. Then I install all the programs I need... set up browser addons while they're downloading. If it was a store bought PC I'd reinstall Windows as previously mentioned by others. The manufacturers seriously mess it up. >.<

I didn't reinstall Windows on my laptop since I know and work with the person who did it and he did it from scratch for me anyways, so it was fine.

Lol, I didn't even have to reinstall Windows on my Asus laptop, worked good and still works very good to this day (almost a year later). Only reason I'm going to format it in the near future is to get rid of vmware and other stuff college put on my laptop.

I would do the following most likely. Just given a list of programs rather than put "download this, download that":

Remove any trial software crap (if the PC came with it. That or reinstall windows.)

Firefox and addons

Songbird, VLC, Spotify

Flash, Java, Abode Reader etc

Audacity, GIMP

Defraggler, CCleaner

AVIRA, Ad-Aware

Steam, Xfire

Pidgin, XChat

Notepad++, Infrarecorder, OpenOffice.org

Probably put most of my games on there and test to see how they run

I format. Regardless of whether it is from a local shop or a dealer. I don't care, It's always a format.

Then it usually goes:

Firefox > Kaspersky > All other fiddly programs.

Then I get wallpapers etc :P
