Runescape is a psychological addiction, not a substance.

Featured Replies

You can be addicted to anything, watching movies, playing card games, however, you might not be physically or psychologically addicted to an environment. Most people treat runescape as a substance. Runescape isn't alcohol, it's not a cigarette that you can keep smoking, it's not a physical substance. Runescape is a world with it's own concepts, ideas, and beliefs.

A lot of people say that runescape is limited and real life will usually lead to more productive results, but these people are wrong in a sense. Teenagers commit suicide everyday because they feel trapped from all the problems that occur in the real life society. Not all people can live in the real world. What about the people that don't have choices? Runescape gives these people opportunities that they will never find in real life, the ability to be a clan leader, to learn friendship values, to learn to share and cooperate with others. Runescape isn't just an addiction, some people play this game because they want a wider range of opportunities.

Runescape can be good or bad, you have the chance to be a clan leader, to demonstrate true leadership, which you can apply to real life! Runescape is full of adults and children, and in the real world, you can't be a clan leader that organizes a clan of 50+ adults.

Addiction is full of definitions, it can be alcohol, gambling, etc. We label runescape as a drug! It's not a drug, it's an environment. Some people feel that they have no control over their lives, but runescape gives you this control in certain situations. You can save your friend in runescape by helping them in the wilderness, you can help your clan with enough motivation, but in real life, you are limited. This is the difference between the real life environment and the runescape environment.

So are we talking about types of addictions or the difference between real life and RS? Make up your mind.

Some people enjoy RS- as well as other MMOs- because they can immerse themselves in a world completely detached from their every day lives. This can lead to lots of bad things, such as addiction and procrastination.

While what you say is true, runescape can offer learning or other opportunities that can be applied in real life, the fact that you can be a whole other person in runescape (a leader, a champion, a popular person, etc.) than who you are in your life, is what makes it so addicting for some people. They consider their runescape life to be better than their real life and would rather spend their time in rs. This is where people have problems because you still have to function and take care of your responsibilities (school, work, family, etc.) in real life. You can't live your life in a fantasy. There has to be a healthy balance.

Theres another kind of addiction?

No, its a game. It is no different than monopoly at its very core and there are hundreds of another MMOs.

Then gtfo. Believe what you want but people actually can live in the real world. I think MMORPG's appeared 20 years ago. There is over 5000 years of history before that where people figured out how to function.

I think denial is part of realizing you have an addiction. People play RS to have fun. Not so they can "experience coal mines" or "lead a clan".

Some people feel they write [cabbage]ty songs. Marijuana gives them the knowledge to right good songs.

I think a lot of people are gonna disagree with you. RS is an addiction to a lot of people. Making excuses doesn't change that.

We're talking about a "social" game, we cannot compare this game to drugs or substances, this game is not as simple as a drug that you can take.

They didn't appear 20 years ago, there were many other forms of mmorpgs, social games, multiplayer games and we're talking about runescape, not world of warcraft, everquest, etc.

Why is it an addiction to lots of people? Ask yourself that.

You can't be addicted to an "environment", it's always something in the environment that causes addiction, which brings us back to the fact that there are two addictions; Physical and Psychological.

Runescape, but basically any game really, is funner than real life to me. But of course you have to function in real life when you get older and have to do it on your own which sucks lol. I honestly don't see the fun in going bowling with some friends, or going somewhere and getting drunk, or walking around town... anything like that. I've done it and I still do it sometimes because otherwise people say you have no life. Mmm well personally, none of that stuff is fun to me. Going to Canada's Wonderland isn't even very fun, I can sit on a ride and have no emotion at all.

I prefer to just go to work and come home and play my video games. That's fun to me. But you can't do it forever because people ask why you don't do something with your life or do something productive... If doing something productive with your life and having a life is wasting your time doing the above things I mentioned then I'd rather be counted out...

No sh!t. Until I start grinding up pure essence and snorting it up my nose, then I think we can all agree its not a substance abuse.

But yeah this thread is stupid.

^ Lol.

But, back on topic. I don't quite see - let alone understand - the point the thread creator is trying to make. From what I see, they are arguing that being addicted to RS is not as bad as being addicted to say, alcohol, or nicotine. Am I right? :|

I think that is the point that's trying to be made. And while I agree that RS is a psychological addiction, not a physical one the rest of the post just fails.

Real life? Whts that

Who knows.

I hear it has better physics, graphics, sound, and immersion. However, they still haven't figured out how to add in an ignore list, you need an extra device for a friends list, there's no audio/visual tweakable options, and there's no instancing. Also, there's a play limit, and permadeath. It's very easy to die, healing is very expensive considering it's keeping you away from permadeath, and your play experience is randomly decided when you join (IE: Wealth, etc)

Permadeath? I thought that was an obsolete MMO model. Somehow they managed to snag over 6 billion and counting into playing though, so there has to be some redeeming quality; though I've yet to find it.
