What Determines Your First Impression on Others?

What is the first thing that you look at when you read someones post to determine what they are like, and how you will answer them? Do you look at the date that they joined, or their post count, their grammer, or does it not matter to you?

Not using 'u/plz/more than one question mark/sup' etc.

 

I don't know why, but unless I already know them the use of those words makes me instantly dislike them.

Proper English grammar (as opposed to grammer). To some extent, their views influence me too, but not so much. Also anything that shows I'm dealing with an underage person - masses of smilies or exclamation marks etc.

I respect everyone unless they're just avidly flaming/baiting/trolling. Although I do admit that if they have horrible grammar, then I tend to not think very highly about them.

Grammar and spelling are the biggest factors, but I also have to go with username. If you have an inordinate amount of numbers, or any, really, I'll probably think they're not very creative.

its not their fault if their original name was taken, like i wanted 'atom smasher' but it was "taken" though when i checked high scores, it wasnt there (probably banned account) but they gave me the '40' in place of the 'er'

I'm not saying it's their fault, not any more than the fact that they chose their own username. I'm just saying, Twibb wasn't my first idea. I can't remember what it was, but I figured out a new one. Really, numbers in names are just a pet peeve of mine. You wouldn't call some in reality John098.

Spelling is probably my biggest thing, or use of "e-speak." Attitude is another though, if you're rude I'm not going to give you the time of day. Anyone who's polite, in game or on here, I can get behind.

I'm going to agree with the masses and say bad spelling/grammar is my biggest prejudice.

 

I cringe every time I see "your" instead of "you're".

Post count is always a first impression maker for me. I know thats dumb, but it doesn't stick around long, its just what I notice first.

 

 

 

Once I get past that well.. I don't really know, I guess it varies from person to person, how they react to me, or others..

Grammar and date the poster joined are two big factors. Their name also, whenever I see pure or pker, I know I'm not gonna be on the same side of the fence as them as I don't pk at all.

 

 

 

Whenever I see leet speak, netspeak, lots of smilies, I usually know I'm not arguying with someone my age. If their are being way too confident about their poor arguments, I'll start to be condescending, if not, I'll try to make them understand.

Name and attempt at spelling/grammar. Also the first sentance. I don't use perfect grammar or spelling, and I know that, but I do try and expect others to do the same. The name is a big one for me. I have certain ascosiations with certain types of name.

 

 

 

Mostly though, I try to look at what someone is actualt saying and focus as much judgement as possible on that. Call it an immediate second impresion if you will. I all but ignore post count and date joined.

Grammar and punctuations are first, attitude is always second. I cannot tolerate people who think pls, wtfffff???, wut, u are valid forms of grammar.

I apparently have a higher tolerance for internet speak than most people. That said however, if you overuse it/have horrendous spelling, no one will think highly of you. Also, if they have an attitude, I'm inclined not to listen.

Grammar: Do you understand how to use the English language? Do you care? If both of these seem to be answered yes, I'm more likely to be open to their opinions. If only the second is yes, then at least they're TRYING, so I'll be likely to pay attention. If only the first is yes, I'm not likely to pay attention. If neither are yes, I'm leaving.

 

 

 

Attitude: If a post is condescending, angry, or otherwise unpleasant, I will probably not think highly of the post.

 

 

 

I don't really care about date joined or post count; those are (usually) not very useful.

Hmmm. As nearly everyone has said, grammar. Everything is much easier to read when it's written in proper English. If someone isn't very good at English and makes mistakes, it's no problem to me though, as they have a good reason.

Proper English and grammar then date joined. Anybody can use a spell checker or grammar checker. I hate the post count because forum games doesn't count :lol: . You can be just as well know as a 1000 post count person with only 20 post because of forum games or clans and such.
