I was wondering what a good, free screen recorder is? Hypercam is good, but I either have to torrent it to get rid of the unregistered hypercam 2, or have that thing in the corner.

You can change the fps with fraps I think.

Yeah, but its either too slow so the videos make my comp look crap, or its too high and the files are too big :(

There isn't that many options for Windows. Most suck.

If you decide to use Camtasia, you should torrent it anyway. Or look at a Torrent site for the cd-key. And yes, you can choose where to record.

I remember I found a way, but I've totally forgotten what it was now. Could've used it a few weeks ago actually.

 

 

 

 

 

Edit: Found it again, have to turn off 'Apply Zoom-Pan Hints in the options.

Camstudio cannot handle videos with over 100,000 frames in them and if he plans on making long videos that is bad. Another thing is that you only have the option of "Avi" and if you try to down convert videos that were recorded in Camstudio the quality suffers very badly.

 

 

 

 

 

A problem with Camtasia on the other hand is that depending on the height and width of your video everything that is recorded will end up with a lot of herky jerky movements.

It has nothing to do with the frame count. It is because CamStudio uses version 1.0 of the AVI format, limiting the file to 2 GB in size. Once CamStudio uses the OpenDML (AVI 2.0) format, files with extremely large sizes (larger than anyone's hard drive) will work fine.

I'll add a note to this thread: look for compression options in your screen recording application of choice; change the codec to be something other than Full Frames (Uncompressed), if it is that. This will save you a lot of hard drive space.

 

 

 

Be aware that some codecs can be slow. Since I've used Camtasia for a while to make screen capture videos, I've found the TechSmith Screen Capture Codec to be fast, yet lossless, though this was mainly for low-movement captures (most desktop apps) and RuneScape.

Unless I am missing some hidden stuff I have to be completely pro with computing to see, Camtasia saves a file of 30 seconds or so to 12kb, and its uploadable on YT. :o

 

Probably way off and its compressed or something.

If you're getting herky jerky movements, your frame rate is too low for what you are recording.

Fraps is the best screen recorder. If you lag when using Fraps, it's not the program, it's your computer. I'm able to easily record with Fraps up to 60FPS on some games, and 50FPS on RuneScape with a 2.8GHz CPU.

 

If you don't lag usually, it's your CPU. If RSHD is usually laggy for you anyway, upgrade your video card.

 

 

 

Don't use Camtasia or Hypercam - those don't record in full quality.

Personally fro me the best tool fro screen recording there is Screen VidShot.

I use Fraps and yes the files are big but good quality, all I do is re-save it in a video editing program to lower the size by a lot.

I'd suggest recording at the highest quality possible, then using another program to convert the filetype and quality. Hard drive space is so cheap now (1TB for $60) you really have no reason to not have enough HDD space.

Besides, it can record audio from any source, including microphone, line-in, or speakers.

For Windows, there are some screen recording applications to help record video of screen, like DemoCreator(30 days for trial version), Camtasia(Full function for 30 days trial but high price), Adobe Captive(Great but high price). Those are able to edit your screen recording before finalizing. The free ones such as Camstudio, Jing project just can record what happened on your screen. TipCam could be better if it improve its screen recording quality.
